Obama on tire inflation: "It's like these guys take pride in being ignorant"

I lost the point of this debate sometime last night. Obama says improved auto maintenance would improve mileage. That’s true. He said last week that “we could save all the oil that they’re talking about getting off drilling, if everybody was just inflating their tires and getting regular tune-ups,” which, realistically, is not true and explains why his campaign won’t offer numbers to back up the claim. Follow the ABC link and you’ll find McCain agreeing that we should be more scrupulous about maintenance (“let’s do that”) but warning that it won’t end our dependence on foreign oil. And he’s right — except that Obama never said it would. In which case, what exactly are we debating? McCain’s point is, and should be, that we should do everything possible to lighten the energy burden: Inflate tires, pursue alternative energy, and oh yes, drill. Obama’s the one who’s content with two out of three. Let’s stay on the ball.
