Ya think, Joe?
As we have been covering here for some time now, both New York City’s Mayor and state Governor Kathy Hochul have been calling on the White House (rarely if ever mentioning Biden by name) to help with the army of illegal migrants overrunning New York and sucking up increasing amounts of resources. They insist this is “a federal problem” that the federal government must solve. And that’s true, because it was Biden who opened the border and started all of this. But what they really want is money and supplies.
They finally received their response, though not from Biden himself. Homeland Security head Alejandro Mayorkas charitably sent them a letter this weekend. But it didn’t contain a check for billions of dollars or a promise to send in the troops to assist them. As the NY Post editorial board informs us, Mayorkas sent “advice” about how they should be handling the situation, implying that they’ve simply been doing it all wrong. Egads.
“The DHS enforcement team has formulated approximately two-dozen recommendations to strengthen the City’s migrant operations,” Mayorkas sniffs.
That’s just the help everyone wants from a supposed partner: Mansplaining about how you’re doing it wrong.
More, he brags about what Team Biden has already done, like allowing “access” to a hanger at JFK Airport to house all of 800 migrants.
Thanks, Alex. That’s maybe two days’ worth of the influx.
So what sort of improvements did Mayorkas suggest? The government-speak in the letter is mind-numbing, probably intentionally so. He speaks of “the subjects of data collection, planning, case management, communications, and other aspects of day-to-day operations.” Here are some of the things that the White House believes will set things to rights:
- Improving data collection when migrants are first processed
- Better communication with asylum seekers
Seriously? Data collection? Better communications? These illegals are arriving by the thousands every week. Most have little or no documentation of any sort and many were never vetted upon arrival. As for communicating, a significant chunk of them can’t even speak English and they come from multiple countries. The phrase “easier said than done” comes to mind.
As we just discussed yesterday, the state is flushing $20 million per month into the city to put up steel shelters that look like they came from a concentration camp on a formerly beautiful island park facility to house 2,000 more migrants. When ready, that will fill up in a matter of weeks. At that point, data collection and communications are not going to do a damn thing.
I’m always fine with pointing out the foibles of New York’s Governor and the Big Apple’s Mayor, but in this case, they have been handed a truly Sisyphean task. The responsibility rests on the shoulders of Joe Biden and, to a certain extent, Mayorkas. But not to send more money or build more housing. Their true responsibility is to actually close the border and send immigration enforcement officials to begin shipping all of those illegals out of the country as we should have been doing from the beginning. That’s the only way that we will stop bleeding all of this money and return the area to some semblance of normality. Or at least as close to normal as anything ever gets in New York.
Will it happen? Almost certainly not, at least as long as Biden is in office. This is precisely what he and his handlers wanted to happen. But I can assure you that we’re getting closer and closer to a breaking point and something very bad is probably on the horizon. The only question is who the legacy media will blame when it does, and I think we all already know the answer to that one.
