“For this association of members to choose to outsource its leadership would, I believe, be an abdication of our responsibility,” Curly Haugland, an RNC member from North Dakota and the former North Dakota Republican Party chairman, wrote in an e-mail to Mr. Steele.
Mr. Haugland called on Mr. Steele to quit the contest for Republican national chairman because he is not an RNC member.
“In my estimation, 168 committed members of the Republican National Committee are a powerful army of qualified advocates for Republican principles; certainly much more threatening to the Democrats than one celebrity spokesman,” Mr. Haugland said.

Oh Lord, here we go again with the sniping and the jealousy and the backstabbing. Are there ANY Republicans left in that organization who’ve made it out of kindergarten?
Gina on November 27, 2008 at 10:35 AM
Can HotAir post contact information to RNC members so that we can voice our support to them? I’ve had trouble finding it myself and they need to know what their constituents think.
TheNolan on November 27, 2008 at 10:37 AM
Shut Up Curly, you chucklehead. Where is your brother Moe and your friend Larry.
This moron is the reason why the RNC is a joke, they’re being run by The Three Stooges.
Ceroth on November 27, 2008 at 10:40 AM
Curly is the problem as well as these other damn republicans that love to snipe at other people rather than taking responsibility at their own failures.
Steele for RNC Chairman!!!

Ummm… yeah, Haughland, that’s really been working out well for you, you little beeyatch.
ErikTheRed on November 27, 2008 at 10:46 AM
No? Well then how ’bout a celebrity like Ted Nugent?
TED 4 RNC CHAIRMAN!
Tony737 on November 27, 2008 at 10:46 AM
I worry about Ted overwhelming the rest of the committee and rendering them stunned with his sheer awesomeness. On second thought, if Haughland is typical then maybe that’s a bonus.
ErikTheRed on November 27, 2008 at 10:52 AM
No, an abdication of your responsibility, Curly, would be to ignore the most qualified candidate for the position regardless of where they come from. Let me explain something to you, the RNC has failed miserably in the last few years. Your “leadership” is next to worthless. The “association” was formed to aid the Party. Focusing solely only the ranks of the “association” is idiotic and short-sighted. Your responsibility is to the Party, not the “association.” The key is to elect a member of the Party, not just the association. Again, your responsibility is to vet all qualified candidates for the best one regardless of where they come from.

Im sorry but Im not a Micheal Steele fan. He is more celebrity than able.
William Amos on November 27, 2008 at 11:03 AM
Rewarding failure is not a traditional Republican principle.
forest on November 27, 2008 at 11:03 AM
I want emails of specific people, not just bland information for contacting departments.
TheNolan on November 27, 2008 at 11:16 AM
Ah, so more reasons to want Steele as chair.
malan89 on November 27, 2008 at 11:20 AM
Seems to me that association of members has failed miserably for quite awhile now. If they really don’t want to abdicate their responsibility, they should admit they have not had a clue and consider others who do.
aikidoka on November 27, 2008 at 11:22 AM
List of current RNC members
Will have to look up contact information yourself
William Amos on November 27, 2008 at 11:22 AM
I dont get is why some dont realize Micheal Steele has been a member of the RNC for the past two years. He is as much to blame for the problems there as others.
William Amos on November 27, 2008 at 11:23 AM
Yeah, I’m gonna take advice from someone who’s named after one of the Three Stooges.
It's Vintage, Duh on November 27, 2008 at 11:28 AM
I hate to agree with these RNC stiffs but Steele is more interested in getting his mug on TV than grassroots organizing. He couldn’t even win his own election and how is his stewardship of GOPAC working out? The GOP needs a staff who can compete online, in mailboxes and with the same fundraising chops. They need PROS!
AYNBLAND on November 27, 2008 at 11:30 AM
My vote; Michael Steele for RNC Chair, period!
FireBlogger on November 27, 2008 at 11:42 AM
Well, if they’re afraid of too much starry zap from the Chair, maybe they should find out if Rick Moranis is a Republican.
eeyore on November 27, 2008 at 12:11 PM
The GOP of today is pure garbage. All they care about is power and being party of the cocktail circuit.
I’ll probably end up voting libertarian in 2010.
lodge on November 27, 2008 at 12:21 PM
They’re talking about appointing one of the RNC members. You know, the same people who’ve now lead the party through two straight elections losses.
As for Steele, he lost his Senatorial race in a deep blue state. He managed to become the first African American in a statewide office when he became Lieutenant Governor.

Curly the Stooge
Travis1 on November 27, 2008 at 12:25 PM
Do you mean GOPAC?
The wiki RNC list for which you provided a link doesn’t list him:
Maryland
Mr. John M Kane, Chairman
The Honorable Joyce L Terhes, Nat. Committeewoman
Mr. Louis M Pope, Nat. Committeeman
He was running against two local faves, Cardin and Mfume. He held his own and I think legitimately overcame the high hurdle of African-American resistance to the contemporary Republican Party. He was taken very seriously. Winning that race would have been like defeating Deep Blue.
I think he is somewhat malleable and open to being labeled a “flip-flopper.” But I think he’s about as 2.0 as Repubs will get this decade.
The Race Card on November 27, 2008 at 12:32 PM
I don’t quite understand this fascination with Steele either. Like he is going to save the party or something. He has a sketchy background at best as evidenced here: http://www.redstate.com/diaries/redstate/2008/nov/17/put-me-in-the-no-but-persuadable-camp-on-m/
Luthien on November 27, 2008 at 12:43 PM
He’s not a member of the RNC. Hence the reason that Curly says they’d had to “outsource its leadership”. Newt Gingrich isn’t either.
amerpundit on November 27, 2008 at 12:44 PM
Apples rot from the inside.
Entelechy on November 27, 2008 at 2:01 PM
Michael Steele IS going to lead this party. He’s concise, intelligent, and a thorn in the side of the left (who like to Uncle Tom him every chance they get).
Palin/Romney 2012!!

That’s the price of failure, Mr. Heguland. Don’t let the door …
Michael Steele: A real leader.

AMEN !!
Red State State of Mind on November 27, 2008 at 4:30 PM
When it comes to the RNC I do all my voting with my WALLET!! And the last few years what they got from me is NOTHING.
Bicyea on November 27, 2008 at 5:19 PM
I still haven’t seen any evidence that Michael Steele gives a damn about white people.
Buddahpundit on November 27, 2008 at 7:19 PM
But wouldn’t using an outsider send the message that the party is going to change? Even if he doesn’t actually do much?
These people don’t get how to play the game. That’s why they epic fail.
Sir Andrew on November 27, 2008 at 8:05 PM
I’m not 100% sold on Steele for RNC chair yet, but considering the monumentally lousy job the RNC has been accomplishing of late, I’m sure as hell willing to listen to him.
