US to release bin Laden’s propaganda tapes? Update: Videos added

posted at 11:15 am on May 7, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Earlier this week, I found myself in perfect agreement with Allahpundit on the question of releasing the photo of Osama bin Laden’s corpse after the raid.  I don’t buy for a moment that its release would stoke any more or less hatred and thirst for revenge than did the killing itself, but it wouldn’t have proven anything to anyone, either.  In the end, al-Qaeda ended up confirming the kill anyway by, er, stating their thirst for revenge over our successful operation in Abbottabad.  The Obama administration made a good call on the photo, probably betting that AQ couldn’t help but confirm bin Laden’s death.

However, the White House rested its case on the notion that releasing the photo would generate enough outrage to motivate terror networks into new operations and better recruiting.  If that’s the case, then this decision seems rather strange, emphasis mine:

Americans are expected to get a glimpse of Osama bin Laden’s daily life with the disclosure of home videos that show him strolling around his secret compound, along with propaganda tapes that have never been made public.

The footage shot at the terror leader’s hideout in Abbottabad, Pakistan, and the propaganda tapes are expected to be released to the news media Saturday, U.S. officials said.

They are among the wealth of information collected during the U.S. raid that killed bin Laden and four others. The information suggests bin Laden played a strong role in planning and directing attacks by al-Qaida and its affiliates in Yemen and Somalia, two senior officials said.

And it further demonstrates to the U.S. that top al-Qaida commanders and other key insurgents are scattered throughout Pakistan, not just in the rugged border areas, and are being supported and given sanctuary by Pakistanis.

Help me out with this one, please.  If we didn’t release the photo because of its potential propaganda value for AQ and other terrorist networks, why exactly do we plan on publishing Osama bin Laden’s propaganda tapes?  From where I sit, one of the benefits of bin Laden’s sudden commitment to room temperature is that he doesn’t get to do any more recruiting.  I’d like to hear an explanation from the Obama administration on why they think the propaganda value of a picture of bin Laden’s corpse after meeting a few highly motivated Navy SEALs is that much higher than bin Laden’s own propaganda.

For that matter, I’m not sure why we need to see bin Laden’s funniest home videos, either.  I suppose that they will help corroborate that we got the right man in last week’s raid … but as I noted at first, AQ has already helpfully confirmed that anyway.  Unless it shows him eating pulled pork sandwiches and drinking a few Heinekens with his closest jihadi buddies, it’s not newsworthy and probably not helpful at all.

This is one dumb idea that the White House should rethink, and quickly.

Update: The White House has begun to release the videos without sound — wisely — and perhaps we can understand why they see the release as valuable. As it turns out, OBL is a vain little man who had himself videotaped watching news reports of himself on TV, and who dyed his hair and beard to hide the gray (via Rob Port):

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

“This is going to be fascinating!” Er, not really. My guess about the second video is that it was intended to provide evidence of his existence on certain dates for later videos he intended to release so that the US couldn’t falsely claim that he’d been killed. Either that, or OBL loved watching himself on TV so much that he took it to the next level of watching himself watching himself on TV. The vanity of dyeing the beard is amusing but not terribly fascinating, either. All this really tells us is that we actually did get bin Laden last weekend — which, again, al-Qaeda already helpfully confirmed.

Seeing the article being mentioned by more “respected” and mainstreamed outlets gives it more merit.

That doesn’t make it any more true than all the other incorrect information that gushed out of the White House following the raid.

And so Barack Hussein Obama and Valerie Jarrett just keep stringing along America, and the rest of the world, rather than just declare a job well done and be done with it.

To what end? To prove how Open, Honest, and Transparent the Barack Hussein Obama administration is?

Fools!

It is spreading. Gellar picked it up on AtlasShrugs; it does seem quite plausible given the attire of Barry O in the “iconic” photo that was pushed by the MSM. Even Hillary came out and said she was sneezing vs. engaged.

Key West Reader on May 7, 2011 at 3:50 PM

My point was not that the story had not been picked up by other outlets. My point was that it didn’t originate in a bigger outlet. Think about it this way: If the story were true, why would a White House official leak the story? It would be because they were so concerned about Obama’s lack of leadership that they felt they had a duty to expose him. They know that doing so will come at tremendous risk to their professional career, but it has to be done for the good of the country.

With that in mind, this brave and patriotic “White House insider” reaches out to a news organization that can spread the news far and wide, they reach out to… an anonymous blogger on a website called Socyberty that hosts articles on a variety of topics including “human psychology, communication, lifestyle choices, politics and education” by any user who wishes to submit a writing.

More from the website’s own self-description: “Many topics, one Socyberty. We cover society from the most explored facets to the smallest change makers. Topics include human psychology, communication, lifestyle choices, politics and education. If you’re interested in exploring social issues or reading about how our society is shaped, check out Socyberty’s diverse collection of articles.”

That site is pretty well known, just not to you. People used to say that about FNC. If it was real it would be on the networks…

You said other people are familiar with the site. That’s like saying someone’s WordPress blog contains reliable information because WordPress is well-known.

From what I can tell, Socyberty hosts articles for all topics under the sun for anybody who any user who feels like writing something. Is the site actually familiar to you, or is the author familiar to you? The article was posted by a user named “Ulsterman”– have you read his articles before? What’s his actual name? As a general rule its unwise to trust stories from anonymous persons relaying stories they heard from unnamed sources.

It isn’t the first leak they’ve done. There were two others; both months apart. I think if you look up the author’s previous articles it might shed some light. It began in late 2010 and is continuing at a very slow, measured pace.

I am skeptical as well. However, this leaker only comes out every 6 months or so; each time divulging very private information on the inner workings of the OWH (Obama White House).

The things that come from this source are remarkable; it does not appear to me that this is a source that is seeking publicity; rather, it seems a source that is seeking to expose something that Americans need to see.

If you are in the field of law, I urge you to study the source; its previous postings and to analyze the credibility of the narrative. I think it is worth a read and a look.

More on those “leaks” from Ulsterman:

Wherein Ulsterman’s Democrat “Insider” Refuses to Even Rebuke the Birthers

But this is far and away my favorite one so far: Ulsterman’s Insider Source Tells Ulsterman Not to Back Now, Close To Making History

I recommend the reading that last one in full, but I’ll leave y’all with this excerpt quote from Ulsterman’s insider warning Ulsterman that the Matrix has him:

“I am not sure you fully appreciate the size and scope of what you are involved with here. It’s far greater than some angry Obama supporters out there calling you names, or making threats. If this breaks the way I think it will break, you are playing a part in history. I’m talking real -expletive- history. If that sounds beyond your own little reality, that’s because it is, or at least it was. But that reality doesn’t exist for you anymore.”

No, now you’re putting words in my mouth. Don’t. The site has been around a while and that particular leaker has also, some accounts have said he’s reliable.

It’s easy to believe that particular story, since skippy is an indecisive empty suit and always has been. Someone gave the order, but it wasn’t him. Nor was it a well thought out order.

In other related news the regime has decided to censor the contents of the videos. Osama’s Command and Control complex is a hovel.

And, yes. I thank you for posting that one, because I had not seen it before. Based on the content, it was a recorded and transcribed conversation. The poster “Ulsterman” posts randomly and seldomly on different sites; almost as if it is not attached or aligned to any specific site.

Given the context of that recorded conversation that you posted, it would appear that the Democratic party is absolutely appalled at this man’s performance as their leader; that they are seeking an out; that the need to re-define themselves post-Obama and that they are in disarray.

Look for Evan Bayh to primary Obama. It will be good for the Nation if he does so.

Tell us again the Leftist lie about how Bush “shut down” the bin Laden unit.

And from your own link:

Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.), whose district includes the Pentagon, said he didn’t have a problem with the GOP decision.

“That’s their call,” he said. “It doesn’t make a whole lot of difference whether we vote for a resolution or not. I’m sure the military knows how supportive of them and how proud of them we all are.”

And remember, Chimpy, Moran is the guy who said this-making him a “troop hater” too!

Moran was criticized by military advocacy groups and conservatives for remarks he made at a local Democratic committee meeting where he said his opponent, 24-year U.S. Army veteran Colonel Patrick Murray, hadn’t “served or performed any kind of public service”.

Hey Chumpthreads, eight years of crapping on the military was too much for your “apparent” show of support now. Liberals hate the military. You have blood on all of your hands for road-blocking the Republicans from prosecuting the war like they could have. You had non-stop peace marches when George Bush did “ANYTHING”. You fought him every step of the way. Code Pink donated money to the very people we were fighting in Fallujah. You and your kind wanted to try and some even under penalty of Capital Punishment, George Bush and Dick Cheney for war crimes. You hauled soldiers and SEALs before grand juries and your bandana wearing thugs bombed and destroyed our recruiting center. Your liberal students chased us off college campuses and slashed the tires of the recruiters vans. One of those men on a campus in Santa Barbara was a decorated combat veteran officer, not 4 months out of combat.

Now, now you low-life whale dungs want to sound like only your side appreciates the military because of one mission obama hung his hat on.

The more you crow about this being obama’s victory, they more you sound like a complete f@#$ing idiot.

That’s like republicans saying that the democrats “hate our troops’.
Both statements are ridiculous….nobody “hates” our military. We do differ in what the military stands for and how we use them/not use them…..AND how we treat them.

Listen, you can ask every single military person active OR retired, and I would bet my right arm that each and every one of them would prefer a raise rather than a “resolution”. They do what they do out of love for their country.
As one soldier once said to me….”the politicians can keep the pats on the back, instead use it for themselves…their good at it.”

Now gee, who was it just a few weeks ago that wanted to put a hold on their salaries while fighting over the national budget?
Oh, and who was it that wants to cut the Defense budget?
And worst of all…..who orders the ROE that put our troops in such grave danger.

So chump…you’d better be careful when you start being so childish as to “who loves the military more”….cuz as they say, actions speak louder than words.

And they are the ones giving the orders.

I’m sure Chump is just feeling guilt. After all, the guy he’s praising, O’bama, had this “record” prior to getting the media to elect him President:

Senator Obama opposed tribunals, renditions, Guantanamo, preventive detention, Predator-drone attacks, the Iraq War, wiretaps, and intercepts — before President Obama either continued or expanded nearly all of them, in addition to embracing targeted assassinations, new body scanning and patdowns at airports, and a third preemptive war against an oil-exporting Arab Muslim nation — this one including NATO efforts to kill the Qaddafi family. The only thing more surreal than Barack Obama’s radical transformation is the sudden approval of it by the once hysterical Left. In Animal Farm and 1984 fashion, the world we knew in 2006 has simply been airbrushed away.

That’s military historian, California farmer/college professor, and lifelong Democrat Victor Davis Hanson. With that statement, he rips Chump and company collective new ones.

So now we believe Al Qaeda releases about Osama’s death?

Why wouldn’t they lie?

Let’s see the headshot.

If they release images of a cooped up live Bin Laden, let’s see the more important propaganda image FOR OUR SIDE of the coup de grace.

In the US Military Officer Corps, Republicans outnumber Democrats 7 to 1.

And they are the ones giving the orders.

That just might be true, but it is clearly not true among the generals.

Really? Name them. Off the top of my head, I can only think of two, Weasely Clark and Ricardo Sanchez.

And let’s not forget, the latter had Abu Ghraib happen on his watch.

And so Barack Hussein Obama and Valerie Jarrett just keep stringing along America, and the rest of the world, rather than just declare a job well done and be done with it.

To what end? To prove how Open, Honest, and Transparent the Barack Hussein Obama administration is?

Fools!

justltl on May 7, 2011 at 10:01 PM

From the “domesticity” article on Drudge:

There was one woman killed in the raid, caught in cross-fire when the commandos killed the courier. A retired Pakistani intelligence officer, Brig. Asa Munir, said the woman was an Arab doctor.

Location, Location, Location!

Ozzie bin Laden paid a bonus because of the location near a Pakistani military base.

Oh, and it was also probably a corner lot on a dead end street.

Mountain view? More money for that too.

Del Dolemonte on May 7, 2011 at 11:20 PM

Del Dolemonte on May 7, 2011 at 11:20 PM

As accurate as the drones are I think they were ruled out AS SOON AS they saw how close the Pakistani military base was to Bin Ladin’s compound. And I think that’s why he chose the place (besides the protection he got from within) and a large city with a military base probably should have been one of the first places we started looking. But that is 20/20.

How would the Pak military have reacted if we hit one of their bases with a drone strike?

journeyintothewhirlwind on May 7, 2011 at 11:37 PM

Lower chance of success?

The route the SEALS took went first of all west to east from Afghan into Paki, but then they had to turn to the north and thread a narrow mountain valley into the lower Himalayan Mountains. I would imagine that driving a drone thru that would take extraordinary luck.

Del Dolemonte on May 8, 2011 at 2:07 AM

Doesn’t anyone know how to play this game?

Mark Steyn put his finger on it in his column yesterday.

The correct followup to the Osama hit would have been to toss his body over the side of the carrier after his head was removed and flown to Washington to be prominently displayed on Obama’s desk during the news conference.

Sure, the Mahr’s and the Chomsky’s would get the vapors, and terrorists that already hate us would still hate us. But the symbolism would be explicit. F–k with the US and we’ll have your head on a platter.

Real leaders know that.

schmuck281 on May 8, 2011 at 2:07 AM

Here is a direct quote from today’s Sunday NYT

Videos seized from Bin Laden’s compound and released by the Obama administration on Saturday showed him wrapped in an old blanket watching himself on TV, like an aging actor imagining a comeback.

The Republican controlled House will NOT pass a resolution honoring the military mission to get OBL.
http://thehill.com/homenews/house/159375-house-wont-honor-seal-mission-with-a-resolution

Can you imagine the outcry if the Democrats had done this?

chumpThreads on May 7, 2011 at 6:35 PM

There’d be none. Just a few weeks ago the Democrat controlled Senate was ready to stop paying the SEALs that got OBL and all the rest of the military.

TugboatPhil on May 8, 2011 at 9:41 AM

As it turns out, OBL is a vain little man who had himself videotaped watching news reports of himself on TV, and who dyed his hair and beard to hide the gray

Ed, This video actually makes OBL look kinda like a crazy old uncle in the family room watching Sportscenter on the tube. This is the guy that turn the US into a semi-police state? This is the guy that we need a Seal team to take out?

Saltysam on May 8, 2011 at 3:52 AM

Saltysam,

It wasn’t my point to win an argument. I voiced my reason for not wanting the photo of OBL made public. I stand by it. None of us knows what the future holds for these young warriors. I’ve witnessed them drug through hell for doing their job in the heat of battle and the fog of war. I haven’t seen a whole lot of Americans stand up to defend them. I’ll not be a part of risking their lives or their families.

Every murdering islamic fanitic in the world would love nothing better than to find out who they are and where they are.

So you see, for me, it’s not about winning some made up argument here at HA. Funny, though, how some of y’all keep score on something this serious. Has a way of making the subject matter into some kind of game.

Texas Gal on May 8, 2011 at 11:36 AM

Interesting that OBL drank Coke rather than Pepsi. Perhaps his support for the Pepsi-drinking Palestinians over the Coke drinking Israelis was just rhetorical.

KW64 on May 8, 2011 at 1:28 PM

After the releasing of the videos of Obama watching himself on TV, doesn’t it seem a bit strange that the WH was taping all of their activities during the OBL raid?

I was surprised to see so much released like the tape of Biden calling lawmakers breaking the news or the Obama with the “Congratulations, Security Team” clip. Why would they tape themselves doing that? Maybe I’m missing something but that is a little weird to me.

gatorfanatic on May 7, 2011 at 7:41 PM

The Freudian slip about Obama watching himself answers that question.

KW64 on May 8, 2011 at 1:41 PM

All non-sense to distract from the real details.
Obama went on national televisions and declared a firefight that didn’t happen.
Who cares that Bin Laden had videos of himself?

Texyank on May 8, 2011 at 2:08 PM

but it wouldn’t have proven anything to anyone, either.

Ed, nothing does.

Why do we believe Bin Laden is dead? Because of a constellation of things: We trust people who said he was (the military); we find the whole thing believable; we trust in the DNA evidence; we know that a lot of hunting went on before they pinned him down.

Or at least that’s why *I* believe he’s dead.

Now, add the picture: It will be one more piece of evidence for me.

If you are going to tell me the picture “won’t prove anything to anyone,” then you may just as well, Ed, go ahead and say all the things I listed above “won’t prove anything to anyone” either.

So why should I be privy to anything? None of it by itself proves his death; all of it taken together is what is persuasive.

Do you see my point? Deciding which pieces of information are things that a reasonable adult would want to know or see, and then deciding that some information for some a reasonable adult is not allowed to see, leads down a path where somebody on high decides arbitrarily which pieces of information we get to see and which we don’t, and we can like it or lump it.

What else is going to come along that they are going to decide we don’t need to see on the basis that, “Well, it wouldn’t convince lunatics anyhow.”

That something would not convince someone who wouldn’t be convinced by anything is no reason to withhold evidence from the rest of us.

Because that line of reasoning would, logically, apply to just everything, about just anything.

Me, I’m not crazy about a government that decides what we “should” or “should not” see, whether it’s a birth certificate or a picture of a dead enemy.

I’m not crazy about the adults in this country being treated like children who should know their place.

(And like you, I can’t help but wonder why instead we have to listen to his propaganda, as if he were still alive.)

Alana on May 8, 2011 at 4:58 PM

*for some reason a resonable adult is not allowed to see …

Alana on May 8, 2011 at 4:59 PM

Meh. I don’t really care to look at his corpse. The corpses of Saddam’s son’s never made me any more sure that they were dead than the announcement of their death did.

We have the photos if we need them. We also have a lot of intel from his house. I tend to agree with Donald Rumsfeld that there is too much information being released about the raid and intel that lead up to it.

We should be publicizing the photos we have that show that al Qaeda are a bunch of bunglers losers, geeks, misfits and an altogether negative image of Islam. They’re not peaceful or pious; they’re vessels of hate, envy and cruelty. For Muslims to hail them is like Christians and Jews celebrating Fred Phelps as a religious hero.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Caught In Bin Laden Hideout Video

Nearly Nobody on May 9, 2011 at 7:16 AM

Good for you. Like I said, I had/have no problem with Bush appearing on that aircraft carrier wearing a flight suit. But if Obama had done same, you would have.

YYZ on May 7, 2011 at 3:35 PM

Very simple, Binky. Bush was wearing a flight suit because 1. he’s an ACTAUL fighter pilot and 2. He had just PERSONALLY flown his aircraft aboard the carrier. Obimbo is NOT a pilot of any sort and is the closest RIGHT NOW he has EVER been to military service.

PJ Emeritus on May 9, 2011 at 12:33 PM

Let me be clear. I never had a problem with the optics of what Bush did that day, except for the banner, of course. It was a nice tribute to the troops, and a good morale boost for the country. I’m just saying that if Obama had done the same thing, most of you would lose your s***. I mean, he spoke in the first person a few times in a speech on the day OBL was killed. And some of you are still thinking about that.

YYZ on May 7, 2011 at 3:11 PM

And let ME be clear, too. It was the SAILORS on the carrier who created, then hung the banner – not Bush. It is Obambi who is PERSONALLY out aggrandizing himself.

HUGE difference.
