Saudi newspaper claims Zawahiri gave up bin Laden to take over AQ

posted at 10:01 am on May 7, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Absurd, of course … or is it?  Were the Americans really this good at finally tracking down Osama bin Laden on their own that they could take him out without losing anyone at all — or did they have help from a high-level betrayal?  I think I finally found a conspiracy theory I can cheer:

Osama Bin Laden’s deputy led U.S. troops to the Al Qaeda leader’s hideout so he could take over the terrorist group, it was claimed today.

Egyptian Ayman Al Zawahiri, who has been touted widely as the man who will succeed Bin Laden as the head of Al Qaeda, turned his back on his terrorist leader following a prolonged power struggle, according to a Saudi newspaper.

The source for this theory is Al-Watan in Saudi Arabia, which is considered somewhat “reformist,” at least according to its Wikipedia entry, although not “reformist” enough to eschew the obligatory anti-Semitic propaganda that plagues most approved media in Arab nations.  In this case, though, the secret puppetmasters aren’t the Joooos; no one would buy that AQ is a puppet of Israel.  Instead, the way that Al-Watan describes the palace coup, the other bête noir of the Saudis were responsible, at least indirectly:

Zawahiri’s Egyptian ally Saif Al Adel is said to have moved to Pakistan last autumn as Al Qaeda’s ‘chief of staff’ after a period of house arrest in Iran.

With his return, Al Qaeda’s Egyptian faction then hatched a plan to dispose of Saudi-born Bin Laden after irresolvable divisions developed between the terrorist group’s top two men. …

The courier who led U.S. forces to Bin Laden was a Pakistani national working for Zawahiri, according to the source.

The man is said to have known he was being followed by American troops and to have intentionally led them to their target.

Call it the Pee Wee Herman defense: We meant to do that.  There are a few holes in that theory, however.  If they wanted bin Laden dead, it would have been much safer for Zawahiri to have the courier conduct the coup himself, for one thing.  Why bet that the Americans would pull the trigger on the raid?  For that matter, why not allow the ISI to cap Osama instead, thereby giving them a little more surface credibility on counterterrorism while still allowing Zawahiri to exploit AQ/Taliban connections within the Pakistani intel service?  Either way, it would have denied the Americans an obvious military and intelligence victory, as well as keeping bin Laden’s computer files from falling into the wrong hands.

Someone may have sold out bin Laden, but it’s unlikely to have been Ayman al-Zawahiri.  Still, this is precisely the kind of conspiracy theory we want to see arise in the aftermath of Osama’s demise.  Not only does it keep the enemy in the position of underestimating our capabilities, it’s likely to start an internal war within the AQ network if it really starts to catch hold among the terrorist rank and file.  It makes a post-Osama power struggle a little more likely, and at the very least increases the chances of AQ conducting a purge that will weaken their network significantly.

I heard today that they will release OBL’s propaganda tapes. Hmmm and they still won’t release the pictures for fear of inciting the animals.

This is BS – but it’s awesome BS.

Saudi’s are a bunch of brilliant bastards!

Dang. Ayman al-Zawahiri musta gots a death wish or sumptin.

BigAlSouth on May 7, 2011 at 10:11 AM

Nope.

He could have just given the info to ISI, which is an obvious ally of the Al Qaeda group these days. The ISI would receive praise for the west and possibly more funding.

Plus, the US wouldn’t have scored a propaganda victory nor would it have had the pleasure of delivering justice and securing additional intelligence.

Doesn’t make sense.

amerpundit on May 7, 2011 at 10:12 AM

Like I wrote in another thread, I like the “Osama’s death was faked, and he’s really stashed in some super secret prison being tortured for information” conspiracy theory, too.
Fun, fun, fun.

BigAlSouth on May 7, 2011 at 10:14 AM

This is where the administration has seriously goofed. The story from the outset should have been they entered the room and Osama was just finishing a late night ham sandwich, he grabbed a woman to hide behind and begged for his life straight to the end.

Welcome home, Ed! Now, tell us exactly what happened on your mission in Pakistan. We know the pictures you were “sending” to us from Rome and the Vatican were taken on a previous trip. Thanks for your service!

Al Zawahiri wouldn’t have given up bin Laden because he knows that would just make it easier for the popo to find him.

SoulGlo on May 7, 2011 at 10:16 AM

Someone may have sold out bin Laden, but it’s unlikely to have been Ayman al-Zawahiri.

I agree. If Zawahiri did sell out OBL, then he sold himself out too. They’re two sides of the same coin, and the US is not going to kill one and allow the other to rise up while there’s a chance to kill him two.

It’s weird to see even a terrorist group reduced to a soap opera format. Wouldn’t the “leaking” of this coup to take the leadership position make Zawahiri a bit less than trustworthy or is that organization so screwed up that this would be considered a smart move?

Zawahiri had always felt that Osama was holding him back professionally. Sure..Osama founded Al Qaeda but could he lead them into the modern world….?

Zawahiri wanted to expand. He wanted to franchise and to market themselves and grow the brand name. He wanted to offer health care and pension benefits and give members the right to collective bargaining. He always thought the company should offer travel expenses and to pay for those new cool 4g phones. But in the end Osama wanted to keep the business family run and a closed shop.
He had no vision.

I give this conspiracy theory no credence whatsoever.

Zawahiri had nothing to gain from taking over a role that he basically already had. And why would he take out a decoy and allow the focus of the primary manhunt to switch to him?

I think this is a story ginned up to try and minimize the credit due U.S. Intelligence services.

Pushing the idea that Zawahiri gave up Osama to us allows the left to continue their theme that extreme interrogation produces no useful intelligence. I expect to see them pushing that angle, in their desperate attempt to whitewash their hero.

very good point

The story is useful for those Saudis who consider al Quaeda an enemy

I assume there was inside cooperation in Pakistan, by person(s) to make it possible for security to not notice the raid. To what extent said person(s) were actually helping the US will probably remain a mystery.

Supposedly they are verifying Obama’s identity by matching his samples against blood relatives. Hope they factor in the tight genetic lines in populations preferring first cousin marriages

My first thought on hearing of the assaination was: wonder if they got a close blood relative to take the hit, so Osama could disappear. Now there’s one for conspiracy theorists. No body, no pics, and secondary genetic testing

The only one I trust in this game are the Navy Seals, and they took out the target marked ‘X’

The Obama WH thrives on confusion. A lot of folk are playing along with him

entagor on May 7, 2011 at 11:40 AM

In wartime, it has always been considered appropriate for governments to keep secrets. Winning a war trumps about everything else, because our survival is at stake. Please go find yourself an appropriate alternative universe if you don’t like that.
Even in peace, appropriate government secrets don’t violate a free and open society. No sane person has ever clamored for our government to put on the internet all the information it has about how make A-Bombs and nerve gases.
Openness has never been anything more than one value among many for our society. It’s claims are not absolute. I certainly have no right to naked pictures of you, despite my intuition that I wouldn’t want them anyway.

Who was it that said Obama took a victory lap in a clown car? Truer words were never spoken.

So… the Saudis fund the MB.

The MB funds terror start-ups, like Binny-boy’s and Z-mans.

They merge to form al Qaeda.

An Egyptian in al Qaeda, Z-man, rats out Binny.

Why?

A power struggle with the ‘Egyptian faction’ of al Qaeda wants to get ahold of the organization. Which organization in Egypt that helped create al Qaeda would want that?

The MB.

Who wanted the MB to do this? Well who funds it?

The Saudis.

There you go! The Saudis are going through the MB to get Z-man to off Binny-boy to control al Qaeda!!!

Makes perfect sense in Middle Eastern Conspiracy Speak.

The rest of us, however, are left scratching our heads.

lexhamfox on May 7, 2011 at 2:51 PM

Another counter-point to this story coming from the House of Saud: If Zawahiri wanted OBL dead, why would he press OBL to relocate to Abbotadod? Why not just have the courier lead the US to him in the mountains?

Lawdawg86 on May 7, 2011 at 2:53 PM

Not only does it keep the enemy in the position of underestimating our capabilities, it’s likely to start an internal war within the AQ network if it really starts to catch hold among the terrorist rank and file. It makes a post-Osama power struggle a little more likely, and at the very least increases the chances of AQ conducting a purge that will weaken their network significantly.

It might also encourage an OBL loyalist to give up al-Zawahiri and/or his minions. A kingdom divided against itself cannot stand. Gotta thank the Saudis for this.

What a strange mind you must have to use that as a debating point. I’m not sure why your thoughts would stray to my naked body; I suggest you try to focus on the topic at hand.

If you are concerned about secrets in war, then you are no doubt dismayed at seeing the President foolishly engaging in a photo op with the SEAL team, making it easier for the enemy to identify those involved. And you are no doubt troubled by the other sensitive information about the raid that the administration has previously revealed.

If not, one can only assume that you are little more than sycophant running interference, seeking to paper over the President’s ineptitude and totalitarian impulses by weakly attempting to insult anyone that disagrees with you.

zoyclem on May 7, 2011 at 4:06 PM

Either way, it would have denied the Americans an obvious military and intelligence victory, as well as keeping bin Laden’s computer files from falling into the wrong hands.

Unless bin Laden’s computer files were actually planted by Zawahiri……………………….

Then again Bin Laden could have sold himself out to the ISI.
The ISI would claim they killed him, body burnt beyond recognition, turned over info on Zawahiri to the ISI so a top ISI guy could take the AQ top spot and Bin Laden retires never to be heard of again, kinda like Jimmy Hoffa!
