Hillary: The GOP can't be bargained with and it doesn't feel pity, remorse or fear

Yes, that headline is a reference to one of the best lines from the original Terminator film. It’s the moment where Kyle Reese tries to explain to Sarah Connor that the situation is dire because the terminator “absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead.”

That came to mind watching this clip from Hillary Clinton’s latest interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, parts of which have been airing on the network this morning. Hillary is talking about civility but her conclusion is that there’s no point trying to be civil with the GOP because the only thing they understand is power.

“You cannot be civil with a political party that wants to destroy what you stand for, what you care about,” Hillary said. She continued, “That’s why I believe if we are fortunate enough to win back the House and/or the Senate that’s when civility can start again. But until then, the only thing that the Republicans seem to recognize and respect is strength.”

Incredibly, Hillary points to the just concluded confirmation fight over Judge Kavanaugh as an example of Republican incivility. Even if you believe some of Trump’s comments about Dr. Ford were inappropriate, shouldn’t there be some sense of self-awareness that kicks in here? Was Spartacus civility? Were Michael Avenatti’s allegations about Kavanaugh’s high school yearbook civility? Was the partisan leak of Dr. Ford’s allegations against her wishes civility? Is claiming you need to delay the proceedings because you’re afraid to fly and then flying to the hearings civility? Was Sen. Gillibrand’s announcement that she believed the accusers without waiting to hear from the accused civility? Were the shouting, crying protesters hounding GOP Senators in their offices and at the elevators civility? Is bringing forward allegations of gang rape that no one can support civility? Were the death threats made against Judge Kavanaugh and Sen. Collins civility?

Any reasonable observer would have to admit that incivility in this situation was, at best, a mixed bag. It certainly can’t be put solely at the feet of one party, not with Michael Avenatti out there crying gang-rape. But none of this seems to occur to Hillary, which should tell you all you need to know about her qualifications to lecture anyone on civility.

But Hillary is just warming up. She then goes through a list of grievances, from the 2000 election to the swift-boat veterans to the way they treated her for the past 25 years. She concluded,” So when you’re dealing with an ideological party that is driven by the lust for power, that is funded by corporate interests to want a government that does its bidding…you can be civil but you can’t overcome what they intend to do unless you win elections.”

The argument Hillary is making here only makes sense if you’ve forgotten every contrary example or decided to ignore them all as whataboutism. Don’t look over there at what Democrats did to Sarah Palin and her family. Don’t look at the treatment of George W. Bush (aka Chimpy McHitlerburton) for years by the ideological left. Don’t look at how Democrats turned Mitt Romney (Mitt “the gent” Romney!) into a cancer-causing, woman-bindering, hair-shaving, Cold War-fixated, vampire capitalist. Forget all of that and let’s just stroll into Hillary’s fantasy land where one party has cornered the market on ideologically motivated savagery and is single-handedly preventing the dawn of civility.

Hillary’s high-handed position is laughable to anyone who has actually been paying attention for more than 10 seconds. But of course, CNN’s Christine Amanpour doesn’t seem prepared to challenge Hillary on any of her nonsense. She just nods along as if this is all perfectly sensible. Maybe the full interview will include a little pushback on all of this but I sort of doubt it.

Bottom line: The GOP is not the terminator, at least it’s not the only one. The current plot is a lot more like T2. There are people being less-than-civil on both sides. Hillary Clinton knows that because she has been part of her own party’s slime machine for decades.
