First, in a Watertown Daily Times’ editorial switching its endorsement from Scozzafava to atty Bill Owens (D), the Daily Times notes that Scozzafava “began to quietly and thoughtfully encourage her supporters to vote for” Owens after her withdrawal announcement 10/31.
And, according to the New York Post, Scozzafava’s husband — Central Labor Council pres. Ron McDougall — wholeheartedly endorsed Owens late last p.m.

I think Scozzafava endorsing the Democrat would play like Daily Kos endorsing Scozzafava. It’s going to remind voters her husband is a union thug, her candidacy was a complete sham, and it’s going to backfire similar to Kos’s trick.

If she is then I take back what I said yesterday about feeling bad for her. She talked of doing what was best for the Party…how the hell is telling your supporters to support the Dem accomplishing that? I wouldn’t be surprised, but its a crappy thing to do regardless.

This article is not definitive, as the paper is proudly in the tank for Owens, but I think the fact that Scuzzball didn’t immediately endorse Hoffman as she dropped out was most certainly definitive. What true Republican, no matter how “moderate” (LOL) would not know who to support between a conservative and a liberal?
progressoverpeace on November 1, 2009 at 12:31 PM
Hahahaha. That’s awesome. You far right lunatics would rather see a Democrat elected than a moderate Republican? Well this conservative Republican WITH logic would rather see a Democrat elected than a far right tea party nutjob who DOESNT live in the district and DOESNT know the issues. Bring.It.On!
You wanted war? You got it.
In all seriousness, I’m all for electing more conservative Republicans, but you guys went about it in the wrong way, thinking you ‘control’ the party. You’ve pissed off a lot of the folks you need to remain relevant, and you’re heeding the calls of people like Palin and Beck who have nothing to lose. When logic comes back to the tea parties (it had some in the beginning, then you guys got selfish and arrogant), then we’ll talk about unity.

Control the party? We are the party. Look at the polls in NY 23, before ScummyFava backed out Hoffman was out polling her 35 to 20. That was with the full might of the GOP behind her. If you think for a second that the 20% is going to break for the Pelosi endorsed leftist your nuts.
Conservatives make up 75% of the Republican party but the elites who run it are to beholden to interest who like big government. That has to change and what you are seeing now is the 75% rising up to take back their party.

But still conservatives are faulted for not supporting someone who in the end shows her true liberal side? We’re supposed to “suck it up” and support anyone who has an R next to their name – no matter how liberal – but when one of those same squishy “moderates” gets upset they line up behind the party they probably should be in anyway.

I notice on FNC this morning that Major Garrett, first rate though he is, is still using ‘moderate’, as in moderate Republican, instead of the more accurate adjective, ‘liberal’. Does this mean that Republicans to the right of her are fringe?
Scozzafava’s NOT a moderate Republican; she’s a liberal Republican. It really discourages me when we persist in allowing the leftists to define the terms of debate, and thereby stack the deck against us.

John the Libertarian on November 1, 2009 at 1:07 PM
Newt’s support was strategic. He even said Scozzafava was not his first choice. I think someone talked to Palin, Rush, and all of them, and convinced them (note I said convinced not compelled them)that conservatives would be wearing Bad Idea Jeans if they tried this third party business.
Because they would be. The GOP is highly unlikely to nominate another Scozzafava, because the unique circumstances under which she was selected in the first place no longer apply.
Sekhmet on November 1, 2009 at 1:08 PM
Admitting mistakes takes a big person. I don’t think Newt has the temperament for higher office if he can’t admit he made a bad call with ScummyFava especially in light of this information.

Buddahpundit on November 1, 2009 at 1:18 PM
You say you’re conservative. You say you want more elected. You couch your rhetoric pretty well, too, except for the far far right talk, using Palin and Beck as examples when that is hardly so. Palin and Beck as just as much to lose as Reynolds, Newt, Brooks, Frum, Noonan, or any of the other ‘Moderates’ and, that is, our liberties to an all consuming national government. In short, nothing less than indentured servitude to the Nanny in DC.
The socialist-lites, such as Scozzafava, that the ‘Moderates’ whine are being purged from the Republican Party will do nothing to help Republicans if one wants to have anything distinguish Republcians from Democrats.
The spite you aim at the tea partiers and talk of some far, far right, only hurts yourself and your own interests, if, as you say, you are a conservative.
Dusty on November 1, 2009 at 1:19 PM
I’m with you on the amnesty/fence/WTF fiasco.
I think the amnesty battle will be extra-spicy this time around. A lot of the energy and fervor of the Tea Parties will carry over onto that front. Could be interesting, if not explosive.

Talk about wrong way thinking. Have you read the party platform for the last 4 decades? Conservatives may not control the party but they sure control the people voting for the party. Mostly because they are the same people.
The lesson for party leaders of NY-23 is that a safe seat gets a conservative candidate. RINO’s, where needed, should be supported in RINO or Dem districts. A clue, any district that elected a Republican in 2008 is a safe district. There is no need to be running RINOs where a conservative will do.
You don’t see the Democrats running Jim Webb in Mass do you?

The GOP has lost complete touch with it’s base. We conservatives are FED UP with the so called “moderates”, who ignore everything we conservatives stand for. How can you be a conservative and believe what Scuzzyfuzzy supports and endorses? You can’t. And if she does edorse the dem, it shows 2 things: 1)She is a liberal (which we all knew), and 2)She is a sore loser.
StephC on November 1, 2009 at 3:09 PM
Seems like the last few weeks the ‘liberals’ are now trying to morph into ‘progressives’. The unstated reason for this is they simply do not want to admit that they are socialists because socialist is the code word for marxist.
Of course, progressive is also a code word for marxist, but they are hoping to redefine the term so people simply do not realize they are voting for american communists.
As a side note, of particular ammusement in word twisting in order to destroy its meaning, Al Sharpton claimed to be a conservative this morning on TV.
