When Epstein, a native of Chattanooga, Tenn., had first greeted the Amish with the Yiddish “Zei gazunt!” — “be healthy” — they understood. After all, the expression is derived from the German word “sei gesund.”
As the two groups walked side by side on Brooklyn streets, Crown Heights residents did double-takes; the Amish could be mistaken for Lubavitchers at a quick glance. But their hats are more square and their ruddy complexions from working outdoors contrast with the pale faces of the studious, urban Lubavitchers.

Pardon me boys, is that the Chattanooga Rebbe? I hear it’s quite a nice shtetl.

So an Amish guy, a Hasid, and an Uzbek walk into a matzo factory….

Odd as they be, I’m always glad to see the Amish in the news because after the murders in one of their schools a couple of years ago, they showed the world what a “religion of peace” might really look like.
YiZhangZhe on April 1, 2009 at 6:15 PM
Thanks for that link.
They’re adorable.

Mine are too. Aren’t everyone’s?
Is it April Fools, site maintenance, or the vast, sinister conspiracy?

You’ve got to be kidding … “Meeting of the Minds”? Is that supposed to be funny or ironic? I know nothing of the Amish, but the Chabad Lubavitchers are a great, brilliant people. They are, to a person, among the most intelligent people I’ve ever met or hope to meet … as well as the most charitable.
This site has been going downhill since Michelle left it … if this is an indication of the direction its going in then take me off your list.
Chas on April 1, 2009 at 6:45 PM
Perhaps you should meet some Amish, then. Come here to PA and find out for yourself.
Wethal on April 1, 2009 at 7:10 PM
I’m sure that they are very nice … I’m Jewish and attend a Chabad shul here in the DC area, so I merely speak from what I know.
Chas on April 1, 2009 at 7:14 PM
I would call him racist, but since he’s a Jew it’s genetically impossible.
DFCtomm on April 1, 2009 at 7:46 PM
So you assume the Amish are idiots. Yes, that’s definitely the most intelligent and charitable thing I’ve heard all day.
Tanya on April 1, 2009 at 8:18 PM
You people are pathetic and make absolutely no sense. I was in no way assuming the Amish are stupid. Just the opposite. I was merely pointing out that I have no experience with them or their community and can only speak from experience … which is limited to the Jewish community.
When Michelle began this site she asked me to be her DC Affiliate, and I was proud to have that distinction. Since she left this place has been going downhill. If the comments on this post are any guage as to the type of people trolling this place now I will contact her and request that my blog be removed from the list.
