Palin isn’t linking Saddam to 9/11. She’s linking al Qaeda in Iraq to al Qaeda.
Too late, the headline is all most people see and is what they go by. If there is a retraction printed, it’ll be buried and nobody will see it, just the way the paper wnats it.
Tony737 on September 12, 2008 at 12:33 AM
It doesn’t stop there. The National Enquirer has two hit pieces coming out tomorrow on her oldest son, and the Washington Post also has a hit piece coming out against the McCains on a 15-year-old story.

And the derangement gets worse. When their MESSiah loses in November, some of these nit wits will need to either be placed under a suicide watch, or kept under police surveillance in case they become violent with others.

The moonbats must have been screeching at the Post, because they are on full-on attack mode now.
This race is officially in the sewers. Way to go, media.

I’m betting it’s both stupid and malicious (like most – perhaps all – of the anti-Palin stuff).

The enemy wants to rebuild the islamic caliphate (and make it global) and that makes ANY country that aids these or any other islamic terrorists fair game to be targeted by the United States and our Allies. Iraq under Saddam was aiding Palestinian terrorists and therefore they were a legitimate target. Liberation. Elections. The best way to fight the caliphate (fire) is with freedom (water).
Tony737 on September 12, 2008 at 12:38 AM
The only people who will see the WaPo headline are the Beltway and metroLiberal elites who already pathologically hate Republicans and hate Palin.
The other 98% of America will support Palin and Palin’s son and all the other brave men and women in Iraq and Afghanistan, while the WaPo throws yet another a hissy fit about patriotism and God.

Hope you’re right Ms. E., but they were just as ‘in the critch’ (haha) for Kerry and yet they’re still here.
Tony737 on September 12, 2008 at 12:54 AM
Again, lets make sure the “credit” goes where it was due. It is Anne E. Kornblut who did the smear not “The Washington Post”. She worked for the NY Times before she came to the Post and is married to a BBC News producer.
Her biography on Wikipedia says “Kornblut has been criticized by a number of influential members of the blogosphere for “being a mouthpiece” for Barack Obama’s talking points.”
So basically, you can probably disregard anything carrying her byline if it relates to politics because it is probably going to be partisan propaganda.

Tony737 on September 12, 2008 at 12:57 AM
The “Dear Mr Obama” video takes away the vile taste of the MSM’s relentless smears and libels.
There are times — and this is one of them — when I begin to question the First Amendment. Hard to believe the Founding Fathers intended it to protect filth such as the NYSlimes and WaPoo.
After the election, when Osama Obama is sent into well-deserved obscurity by the voters, it will be time for a reckoning. Those who have lied, distorted and misrepresented the truth on his behalf must be held accountable.
MrScribbler on September 12, 2008 at 12:58 AM
This year is different. The American electorate is furious, wants change, but not the kind Obama is offering. Keep up the spirit. You’ll see.
Entelechy on September 12, 2008 at 1:00 AM
This story explains everything that’s coming. the Media notice he says the liberal media (in their madness they name themselves) are mad. they say McCain is lying about everything. they are pissed that Palin is taking the limelight, that Obama is self destructing, do not see him doing well in the debates, etc. Gibson’s interview should have tipped us off but we thought it might just be an outlier but this says it all. they are out to take down not only Gov. Palin but McCain as well .

Tony737 on September 12, 2008 at 1:00 AM
I would have thought that the Post would have learned their lesson that this kind of blatant misrepresentation is not going to be tolerated. Even if they don’t care, they surely should see by now that these kind of drive by smears will not work against Palin. I guess it’s too hard for liberals to change their thinking.

LOL, I just checked that footnote and the “influential member of the blogosphere” is apparently Glenn Greenwald!!!! He is about as influential as that idiot in front of the Safeway who babbles to himself all day. He is the “weekly world news” of the blogosphere and according to Wikipedia, he is “influential”. I am wondering if they mean he has influenza or something.

For the past few months, I’ve been trying to convince my parents to drop the Baltimore Sun and pick up a subscription to WaPo. Anyone who’s familiar with the Sun’s new layout will understand why I want to ditch the blog wannabe rag. After reading about how the Post is so blatantly smearing Governor Palin, I’m not reading one article from any major newspaper unless it is online and I can check out the facts for myself.

WaPo’s backpeddling.
amerpundit on September 12, 2008 at 1:28 AM
Derangement is one thing, but this is just plain stupidity. Whoever wrote the article is just stuck on the old meme that SADDAM HUSSEIN himself didn’t personally order the 9/11 attacks.
We haven’t been at war with the Hussein regime for three years now. This is a rookie mistake; I can’t believe it could make it past any editor. Do newspapers put stuff on the Web before it gets proofread or something?
logis on September 12, 2008 at 1:33 AM
Not surprised by this at all. Palin should use this to her advantage. Next time she’s asked about this her response should be to mock WaPo for failing to realize Saddam’s regime was defeated by the brave US Armed Forces over five years ago and since being executed by the free people of Iraq the only major opposition our brave men and women have left to clean up are those cowardly Al Qaeda extremists, who do in fact have a link back to 9/11.
smfoushee on September 12, 2008 at 1:34 AM

This just in: McDonalds in Albuquerque MAY NOT have links to the McDonalds Corporation and senior leaders. Intelligence analysts point to the fact that franchising may be occuring. We will continuing updating the story as further chains, possibly in your hometown, may also have no links to McDonalds Corporation, a view that even the White House has come to accept.

The nitwits will have to man their own suicide watch. Unless you mean like “watch” for entertainment, in which case I might buy a ticket. If they want to get violent, that’s OK too, as they have been so smart as to eschew firearms. I’ll be plenty ready to defend myself.
No – I don’t want to actually shoot someone. But for those outside my monkeysphere, I honestly don’t care. I can live the rest of my life without the spoiled actors, singers, and artists. I just want to live without the hate.

“Claims that Iraq shared responsibility for the attacks with al-Qaida were once promoted by administration officials, but have since been rejected, even by President Bush.”
WTF? Nobody’s focusing on this fairly typical, outrageous counterfactual editorializing, but I repeat, WTF?
Funny, I was not only focused on this topic from 9/11 on but actually got involved in the aftermath. Somehow I missed when govt. officials actually made any claim that Iraq was involved in the 9/11 attacks. When was that exactly?
Iraq’s involvement with AQ was asserted with good reason prior to OIF, and this claim was validated by information and evidence acquired through the invasion. The deeper and as yet still preliminary exploitation of regime documentation has revealed an even more fundamental AQ/Iraq link in the form of an important relationship between Iraqi intelligence and the major component element of AQ in the later 90s and on 9/11/01 – Egyptian Islamic Jihad.
But Iraq was never linked specifically to 9/11 by govt. officials. And VP Cheney saying, quite properly, “we don’t know” when asked about it within a week or two of the attacks doesn’t come close to counting as such an instance.
Is this like the absurd “imminent threat” distortion, in which the administration was repeatedly alleged to have called Iraq an “imminent threat” when in fact they did no such thing and even went out of their way to explain how the very concept wasn’t relevant? I think the NYT had to correct itself on this specific distortion four separate times?
To fisk just the average wire service “news” dispatch is to be astonished and appalled at how almost every sentence and paragraph contains egregious errors of fact or ridiculous and unpersuasive editorializing. Here we had just two paragraphs of a front-page article, and BOTH paragraphs had major errors.
Hard to believe there isn’t a market out there for, you know, responsibly written, impartial news. These days, unless you have extensive independent expertise of your own, and time/energy to fisk or check or modify what passes for “news”, you really are likely to believe the most preposterous things. Very, very dangerous.

You’re right, Always Right. I don’t understand the reaction to WaPo article; they are what they are. Who cares? What influence do they have? At the rate the MSM is disintegrating, the person who wrote this article will be working free-lance in a matter of time.
The MSM have simply outed themselves for all to see – this election cycle is their last chance before many channels in print/broadcast cease to exist.
kuhio on September 12, 2008 at 6:25 AM
Thing is, I don’t ever recall Bush making the claim Iraq had anything to do with 9-11 either. I know the MSM accepts as fact that he did, but that doesn’t make it so.
So this wasn’t just one bullsh!t. It was bullsh!t lasagna.

MSNBC is repeating the smear as of this moment. Gov Tim Kaine also is picking up the theme. Do the dems not understand that our soldiers fighting in Iraq are fighting terrorists.
The MSM are a bunch of ignorant, fools pretending to be smart…McCain camp needs to jump on this and fire with both barrels..and accuse the MSM/Dems of ignorance of the war of who we are fighting. this would show that they are clueless

“By all means Ms. Cornbutt should be named, but don’t let the rest of the WaPos off the hook.”
Of course we won’t but what we need to do is make sure the name of the writer is included in our critique of the content. That way when anyone googles the name of that journalist, they are presented with the criticism of their work in addition to the fawning praise one generally finds.
Also, most papers don’t mind taking flack for their stuff but they are sensitive to their reportings “being” the story. Having a “journalist” called on their content by the public generally gets the attention of the paper and can result in a request for the reporter to tone it down.
