Obama thinks he is even more than President of the US.
That’s the sad part. ugh…He should be in Hollywood, Not on a possible route to the White House.
bridgetown on July 22, 2008 at 8:27 AM
I hope they film a commercial there.
Idiots. That ought to sit well with most Americans.
How about just PRETENDING that you like your Own Country, Obama?
bridgetown on July 22, 2008 at 8:29 AM
“It is not going to be a political speech,” said a senior foreign policy adviser, who spoke to reporters on background. “When the president of the United States goes and gives a speech, it is not a political speech or a political rally.
[]
“He is going to talk about the issues as an individual … not as a candidate, but as an individual, as a senator,” the adviser added.
[]
Yet, a campaign aide at the briefing said the Berlin speech “is not for campaign purposes.”
“I don’t think the fact that large numbers of people gather to hear a speech makes it a campaign speech,” the aide said. “The substance of what he addresses is what’s important. And what he is addressing has nothing to do with campaigns. It has to do with his view of where we are today in the world.”
How fargin’ stupid do these people think we are? (Oh, yeah — nevermind.)
Lee on July 22, 2008 at 8:34 AM
Obama goes to Germany to give a speech and he can draw thousands of people. Tens of thousands? Perhaps a hundred thousand?
McCain couldn’t draw a hundred.
Dave Rywall on July 22, 2008 at 8:35 AM
Every day this guy is pissing me off more and more. The sheer audacity of his arrogance is astonishing and I hope the sheeple in this country start to wake up.
kyarnes on July 22, 2008 at 8:35 AM
The outdoor speech at the Victory Column could draw thousands of people …
Uh, yeah, and considering its meaning, they might all be doing the NaZi Roman salute.
What’s the problem here? Let him make a speech in front of thousands. Then, in November, let’s see how much those votes cast by enthusiastic Berlin residents count toward the final totals…

In fact, if we let Europe choose our presidents they’d give us someone equally as feckless and callow as this zero and his crew. But I guess sensible trolls like you are right and the grownups are wrong.

Aides suggested the speech would not target Republican John McCain, but might draw contrasts with President Bush’s policies.
Water’s edge! Water’s edge! Politics stop at water’s edge!!
MayBee on July 22, 2008 at 9:43 AM
Not a political rally…that’s such BS. Just wait, he’ll bring all sorts of hope to the lefties in Europe when he inevitably trashes the US in his speech there.

“Eventually, we will all hate Obama, too.” — David Aaronovitch, ToL
A little concerned but not that much. They are already recognizing him for what he is and will be regardless of what he does.
As for over here, problems with his narcissism and deception are moving from accusatory to mockery and he’s still a month from the nomination.
Dusty on July 22, 2008 at 9:45 AM
The process for picking the nominees is months too long. The campaign for president is way too long. The internet allows people to nitpick and complain about the nominees 24/7. The media are a bunch of morons. Both sides are so full of hatred and spite toward the other party’s nominee it’s a destructive mess. You guys need to change your process – every election tears the country apart and fu*ks it up.
Dave Rywall on July 22, 2008 at 9:58 AM
It probably has more to do with how the trip is being financed. If he can claim it’s an official trip in his capacity as a Senator, we, the taxpayers get to pay for it and he doesn’t have to dip into his campaign funds. Someone ought to investigate.
Oh, I didn’t know you were a foreigner. Even if you hadn’t said, “You guys need to change your process …” your ignorance of our process would have been a good hint. Nitpicking is what we do; “negative” campaigning is what we do; half-in-the-bag media is SOP; short presidential campaigns are an exception, not the rule, and look where it has gotten us since 1800.
Thanks for the advice, but no thanks.

The reporter who said that should be given a medal for having the ba**s that none other has. gator70 on July 22, 2008 at 8:23 AM
Maybe it was just a slip of the tongue by the reporter.
Did you read where the reporter from The New Yorker was denied a seat on the plane by Barack Obama in retaliation for the ‘obama and his wife are terrorists’ cover cartoon?
Guess which reporter is next to be denied the privilege of being a member of the ‘Predident Obama’ entourage.
wise_man on July 22, 2008 at 10:26 AM
This must be one fluffy hifalutin speech he has lined up. He is going to give the Saul Alinsky view of how the world is and should be. The Germans will have tremors in their Picklehaubes, the French will be softer than runny cheese and twice as pungent. Myself? I will have some friends tie me to my coat tree and leave my ears unstopped with wax and dare to listen to the siren’s song.

And we need advise from outsiders like a bullet to the brain.
Despite election after election, every two years and every four years, we still manage to be the world’s number one superpower.
Maybe your country could learn a thing or two from us.

As you already said, we don’t care one bit what Europe things of our leader. If we wanted their input, we’d allow them the option of casting a vote.
And my comment still stands. We do this every two to four years. This one has been one of the longest, but in all, it works for us. Obama, as flawed a man as he is, cannot destroy this country and neither can differing political opinions.
Esthier on July 22, 2008 at 11:16 AM
But I understand you guys are a bit extra touchy today with the Europe liking Obama and hating McCain thing bugging you so much.
My. The only thing missing from that comment was “I know you are but what am I?”
Most of the Europeans I’ve talked to like Obama more than McCain, but still think the differences between the two candidates are extremely small. The general sentiment is that it’s like choosing between the far, radical right and the radical right. Basically, even our ultraliberals are still considered too conservative for most of them. Which means they don’t like Obama. They just like Obama more than they like McCain (which isn’t saying much).
Now, let me let you in on a little secret about the American ego. Thousands of Europeans are expected to gather to listen to one of our country’s presidential candidates speak. The ego boost is HUGE! He may not be the candidate that I’m voting for, but it warms my heart to know that my country is so dominant and important in this world that a man that’s not even in charge of it can gather thousands of people that don’t even live here to listen to a boring “hopenchange” speech.
Blowback
