Explaining his support for the uncompromisingly liberal Obama, Hunter blogged on June 6: “The Republican Party is a dead rotting carcass with a few decrepit old leaders stumbling around like zombies in a horror version of ‘Weekend With Bernie,’ handcuffed to a corpse.”
While he never would use such language, Colin Powell is said by friends to share Hunter’s analysis of the GOP. His tenuous 13-year relationship with the Republican Party, following his retirement from the Army, has ended. The national security adviser for Ronald Reagan left the present administration bitter about being ushered out of the State Department a year earlier than he wanted. As an African American, friends say, Powell is sensitive to racial attacks on Obama and especially on Obama’s wife, Michelle. While McCain strategists shrug off defections from Bruce Bartlett and Larry Hunter, they wince in anticipating headlines generated by Powell’s expected endorsement of Obama.

Huh? Novak sees Hagel as conservative?

They quoted a New Republic article by a guy who is making money off a book bashing Bush and pretending that he is some sort of non partisan analyst of the situation regarding Obamicons. Give me a break, WaPo.

I used to think a lot more of Powell than now. Naturally MSM will beat this like a drum, but it’s almost worth it if he takes his his weaselly alter-ego Armitage with him. Good fricken riddance.
Can Powell really favor surrendering Iraq? How can he possibly not see the consequences of that?

I never liked Powell. I thought he was a guy who cared more about his image rather than what is right. A thought process of the liberals.
To take out his animosity with the Bush Administration on to John McCain is completely misguided and irresponsible. I believe Powell wants to “repair” his public image and he thinks to bow down to the Obamessiah altar will do the trick. Maybe to the lib media, but he will forever be thought of negatively in the republican campaign.

Even if he believed the Republican party is a, “rotting corpse,” that does not cause one to change their basic political philosophy. How many excuses can Powell come up with for supporting Obama? Will he ever have the balls to be honest and give the real reason?

I thought Armitage was one of McCain’s advisors? And I still think that, from a purely political standpoint (i.e.: winning the election, not governing policy), Powell would be a terrific pick for McCain’s VP.

For the sake of posterity, someone should record all of these people losing their minds over this vapid and naive future President.
If Obama is going to crater American prestige and the economy while attempting to federalize the personal rights of it’s citizens, someone should remember who was at the table with him at the beginning. Something good should come out of this debacle…

You mean the same reason your parents ancestors and progeny have and will always vote the way they do? That reason?
Powell has demonstrated his valor, courage and mettle. He is not perfect but I’m guessing he is at least as good a man as you. That being said, if he is so fallable to be the type of person that would hide the “real” reason he chooses a candidate, then I guess you are subject to the same frailties. Got it?
No. To the quick…you are no better than Powell. So if he’s voting for surreptitious reasons what exempts you from doing the same?
What’s the “real” reason you don’t like him. See how annoying that is? (Oh the irony of me making this comment)

Powelll lost favor with the hard right long ago. But his image to most Americans has and will remain to be one of great honor.
A Powell endorsement would be very valuable to Barack Obama. However I think If McCain plans well and times it right, his response could garner him some support. Of all the endorsements still left, I think this one is the most tenuous.
It would be great if Powell ultimately endorsed McCain. Won’t happen…would be nice.
