‘Fall Guy’ Dumbs Down ’80s TV Show … Way Down

“Idiocracy,” indeed.

Mike Judge’s 2006 classic predicted the dumbing down of society. If Hollywood has its way, we’ll get there sooner than later.

“The Fall Guy” only cares about the stunts, and a few of them are worth the price of admission. Yet a great stunt needs a story to anchor it. Otherwise, it’s eye candy and nothing else.

Too bad -- I was hoping for a fun vibe like Gosling's The Nice Guys from this nostalgia entry. That had a good story anchoring some of the slapstick comedy and bro-comedy bits with Russell Crowe, who was great in that role.

Hollywood used to know how to do this. Hal Needham's collaborations with Burt Reynolds in the 1970s were fun and successful, although they're pretty dated now. But Smokey and the Bandit is still a classic and thoroughly watchable. I always sit a spell when it comes on the cable movie channels.
