House Democrats seek to censure Trump next week over 's**thole' comments

House Democrats announced Friday that they will pursue a censure resolution next week against President Trump for his widely criticized reference to “s**thole countries” during a White House meeting. From the Hill:

Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Cedric Richmond (D-La.) and Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.), the ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, expect to formally introduce the censure resolution after the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday.

The two lawmakers said in a joint statement that they were “deeply disturbed and offended” by Trump’s remarks describing places like Haiti and African nations as “shithole countries.”…

“This censure resolution is important because America is a beacon of hope. We have to show the world that this president does not represent the real feelings of most of the American people which is part of the reason why he lost the popular vote,” Richmond and Nadler said.

“Congress must speak with one voice in condemning these offensive and anti-American remarks. There is no excuse for it.”

Rep. James Clyburn endorsed the effort in an appearance on CNN today saying, “If a general or some other line officer in the military were to say that, he would be censured, or she.” He continued, “I think that it should occur here with the Commander-in-Chief, at a minimum.”

Rep. Clyburn didn’t say what the alternative to the minimum might be, but Rep. Al Green, who has previously introduced articles of impeachment against President Trump, offered one idea:

Rep. Green was joined by Rep. Maxine Waters who separately called for Trump’s impeachment. In a statement posted on her website, Waters wrote:

Donald Trump is a racist and indecent man with no good values who is woefully unfit and undeserving of the office in which he serves. That this president, a deeply flawed human being with no understanding of public policy, would make such ill-informed and deplorable comments about Haitians, Salvadorans, and immigrants from African countries, merely underscores everything we already know about him: he is a hopeless and ignorant bigot.

Donald Trump dog-whistled his way into the White House, running a campaign based on hate, bigotry, and fear…

Donald Trump is an embarrassment and a national disgrace. Members of Congress have a responsibility to the American people and our democracy to impeach him.

Rep. Pelosi and senior Democrats are still officially discouraging this sort of talk but the bottom line here is that this story is not going to die away over the weekend, at least not if Democrats can help it. They are going to ramp up and make this an issue all next week.
