Some are comparing Romney to John Kerry, but just check out the similarities of Mitt 2012 with Duke 1988. Both were Massachusetts governors considered robotic and out of touch with average voters. Romney made a $10,000 bet in a debate; Dukakis suggested Iowa voters grow Belgian endive…

Both Dukakis and Romney have benefitted from others taking a pass on the race. In the GOP race, many of the strongest potential candidates such as New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie stayed out. In the 1988 Democratic race, it was New York Gov. Mario Cuomo who chickened out…

And Romney and Dukakis both share the best attributes for winning the nomination: competence and electability (though it didn’t exactly work out for Duke).

Of course, Dukakis and Romney are ideological opposites and would hate the fact they’re being compared to each other. But consider what’s happening in Iowa.
