"Extremism envy" is reshaping the left

The Democratic Party’s activist wing seems to have extremism envy.

Having spent the Obama years clucking its collective tongue at the radicalism of insurgent Republicans — from the anti-spending protests of 2009 to the so-called “fiscal cliff” crisis of 2011 through the government shutdown of 2013 and finally to the anti-establishment candidacy of Donald Trump — the activist wing is turning itself into a Tea Party cover band.

We’ve heard these songs before.

The protest staged outside Sen. Chuck Schumer’s Park Slope apartment on Monday night was not only an effort to put the fear of God into the Senate minority leader for his supposed capitulation on the government shutdown. It was a shot across the bow of the Democratic “establishment” for refusing to “fight” and for showing no backbone against the villainous Trump Republicans.
