Since finishing a distant second to Sanford in the March 19 Republican primary, Bostic has struggled to rally support against the former governor. The former councilman, who entered the runoff with $56,000 cash on hand to Sanford’s $271,000, has watched as a half-dozen of his primary opponents have lined up to endorse his opponent.
In an interview after a debate against Sanford last week, Bostic acknowledged his plight.
“How could anyone describe it as anything less than a David vs. Goliath struggle? Here’s a guy with 100 percent name recognition, who spent three terms in Congress, two terms as a popular governor,” Bostic said. “He handles himself well in public. He has lots of money, much of which has come because of prior relationships — all of that has been to his benefit in this race.”
Yet, despite polls showing him up by double digits, Sanford can’t quite rest easy. On Saturday, Bostic picked up the endorsement of former Rep. Henry Brown, who held the Lowcountry-area seat for a decade. And on Thursday evening, Bostic turned in a strong debate performance, jabbing Sanford as a compromised pol who could lose to Colbert Busch.
