The president almost always finishes first among men and Hillary Clinton almost always finishes first among women, with Billy Graham and Oprah reliably in the top ten of each list respectively. (Graham’s been there for 57 years running.) What always strikes me as strange about this list is how low the numbers are. This year, only Obama and Hillary broke into double digits and each of them is mired in the mid-teens. That’s par for the course, if memory serves. Why is that, though? Catholics are something like 20 percent of the U.S. population and Pope Francis received tons of flattering media coverage this year; you would think he might muster 10 percent, if not more. Nope — just four percent. It’s apparently hard for Americans to find consensus on people they admire beyond the most stupendously famous political actors.
