Looks like Sessions will get AG

The New York Times is reporting that President-elect Donald Trump has offered Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) the position of Attorney General in his cabinet.

President-elect Donald J. Trump has selected Senator Jeff Sessions, a conservative from Alabama who became a close adviser after endorsing him early in his campaign, to be the attorney general of the United States, according to officials close to the transition.

Mr. Sessions was also under consideration for secretary of defense, creating debate within the Trump transition team over which job he should fill.

Mr. Sessions, a former prosecutor elected to the Senate in 1996, serves on the Judiciary Committee and has opposed immigration reform as well as bipartisan proposals to cut mandatory minimum prison sentences.

And right on cue, the mainstream media and Democrats (redundant) are shouting “racist!” (CNN)

The former US attorney for the Southern District of Alabama and Alabama attorney general isn’t without controversy. His appointment to a federal district court by then-President Ronald Reagan sank when a former Justice Department employee testified that Sessions had made racially tinged remarks.

He had denounced the 1965 Voting Rights Act and had labeled the American Civil Liberties Union and the NAACP “un-American” and said the organizations “forced civil rights down the throats of people.”

A black Justice Department staffer said Sessions had called him “boy” and claimed he had thought the Ku Klux Klan “were OK until I found out they smoked pot.”

During his confirmation hearings back in the Reagan years, Sessions was grilled by none other than then-Senator Joe Biden:

Sessions appears to have had the last laugh as he ended up running for and winning a senate seat and worked side-by-side for many years with the same men and women who spiked his appointment to the federal bench. And now, barring a circus-like confirmation process, he will serve as the top cop in the country.

Considering the fact that many of President-elect Trump’s immigration policies will boil down to implementing and enforcing existing law with a renewed vigor, having an ally on that key issue as the head of the Justice Department would be invaluable.
