The U.S. border patrol discovered an 800 yard tunnel that which was used to smuggle tons of marijuana and cocaine to the United States from Mexico. Fox News reports on what authorities found:

The tunnel extends 300 yards from a house in Tijuana, Mexico, to the border and then 500 yards on the U.S. side to a fenced lot in the San Diego industrial area of Otay Mesa. The lot was advertised as a wooden pallet business, with one sign reading, “Otay Pallets — We Buy Pallets.”

In all, agents found 68 packages of marijuana weighing a combined 1,600 pounds inside the tunnel, Duffy added. Another 11,000 pounds of cannabis and 2,242 pounds of cocaine turned up in a truck. Another 1,430 pounds of marijuana were found inside the trash bin.

That’s a metric ton of cocaine and nearly 7 metric tons of marijuana. The tunnel had its own rail system and ended on the American side beneath a dumpster. Reuters reports the drugs were transported from the business to another location where they were put on a truck:

The latest tunnel, excavated 46 feet beneath the surface, ran from the bottom of an elevator shaft built into a house in Tijuana to a hole in the ground on the U.S. side enclosed within a fenced-in lot set up as a pallet business. The hole was concealed under a trailer-sized trash dumpster that smugglers used to move the drugs off the lot, federal officials said.

“They put the drugs in the dumpster and then hauled the dumpster to another location to unload it,” Duffy said. Federal agents followed a truck that carted the dumpster to a central San Diego spot about 25 miles north of the border and watched as the cargo was loaded onto a box truck, which drove away.

Authorities, who have been watching the tunnel for months, arrested six people in the bust including 3 who were in the truck when it was stopped by sheriff’s deputies. Border patrol released this video of an U.S. agent making his way through the tunnel with a go-pro camera on his helmet.
