The Secret Service responded to a person who tried to set himself on fire near the White House Friday afternoon.

After putting out the fire, officers carried the man away from the White House into Lafayette Park:

Here’s a closeup showing the man’s face. Fortunately, he doesn’t appear to be burned too badly.

The Secret Service says he was transported to a nearby hospital and that his injuries do not appear life-threatening. President Trump was inside the White House at the time and the building was locked down briefly. As for why he did this, NBC 4 in Washington, DC is reporting the man has mental health issues. So it appears this probably wasn’t any type of political protest. I’ll update this story if more information becomes available.
