There was a school shooting this morning at a high school in Benton, Kentucky. At least one person has been killed and several more are injured. The shooter is in custody. First, this CNN map shows where Benton is located in the state:

Reports on this are still just coming in so all of the usual caveats apply, but we know at least this much from the Governor himself:

NBCNews spoke to someone who witnessed people fleeing the school after the shooting:

Junior Greg Rodgers told NBC News that when he arrived at school he saw students racing out of the building.

“I pulled off to the side of the road because everyone was running to the main road,” Rodgers, 17, said. “I asked my friend what was going on and he told me that there was a school shooting. I was shocked. He said that someone had just shot up the school.”

Rodgers said the bullets started flying as kids were heading to classes.

“I’m distraught from all of it. I couldn’t really focus driving home. I was shaking a lot driving back to my house. I’m still shaking,” he said.

This local news report contains video of police heading into the school:

CNN reports there is no word on a motive yet. The Associated Press reports 7 people have been taken to hospitals:

Authorities say seven people have been taken to hospitals following a fatal shooting at a Kentucky high school.

Darlene Lynn of Marshall County Emergency Management tells WDRB-TV that some of the wounded were flown by helicopter for medical treatment.

Vanderbilt University Medical Center spokeswoman Tavia Smith says two patients from the shooting were being taken to a hospital in Nashville, Tennessee.

Finally, this video was shot by Chad Darnell, a photojournalist from WPSD in Paducah, KY, which is located about 30 miles northwest of Benton. His child apparently attends the high school where the shooting happened. After getting a call, he returned to the school and wound up in a small security office with three students who had fled the scene. He doesn’t show their faces (because they are minors and he doesn’t have permission from their parents) but he does ask them what they experienced. One female student says she was near the shooter when it started. A male student says one of his friends was shot in the chest and ran from the building alongside him, but then he lost track of him. The third students says she has heard that two of the people shot were her cousins. Obviously, I can’t confirm any of this so take everything said here with a grain of salt:

I’ll update this post as more information is made available.

Update: The Associated Press is now reporting two victims have died.

A 15-year-old student opened fire with a handgun inside his rural Kentucky high school Tuesday, killing two classmates, injuring 19 others and sending hundreds fleeing for safety.

Police were seen leading a teenager away in handcuffs. It was the nation’s first fatal school shooting of 2018.

The shooter will be charged with murder and attempted murder, Kentucky State Police Lt. Michael Webb said.
