Meryl Streep: Never mind me speaking out about Weinstein, when does Melania speak out about Trump?
This reminds me of Big Harv’s own pitiful attempt at buck-passing after the NYT finally nuked him with its expose in October. Remember the statement he put out? Big finish:
I cannot be more remorseful about the people I hurt, and I plan to do right by all of them.
I am going to need a place to channel that anger, so I’ve decided that I’m going to give the NRA my full attention. I hope Wayne LaPierre will enjoy his retirement party. I’m going to do it at the same I had my Bar Mitzvah. I’m making a movie about our President, perhaps we can make it a joint retirement party. One year ago, I began organizing a $5 million foundation to give scholarships to women directors at USC. While this might seem coincidental, it has been in the works for a year. It will be named after my mom, and I won’t disappoint her.
“Enough about the thousand rapes I may have committed. Let’s talk about the real evil, the gun lobby.” Streep’s not that shameless but she’s in deflection mode too. Why should we focus on her looking the other way at one sexual predator’s abuse when we could focus on a more prominent woman looking the other way at someone else’s?
STREEP I know. I found out about [Weinstein] on a Friday and went home deep into my own life. And then somebody told me that on “Morning Joe” they were screaming that I haven’t responded yet. I don’t have a Twitter thing or – handle, whatever. And I don’t have Facebook. I really had to think. Because it really underlined my own sense of cluelessness, and also how evil, deeply evil, and duplicitous, a person he was, yet such a champion of really great work.
You make movies. You think you know everything about everybody. So much gossip. You don’t know anything. People are so inscrutable on a certain level. And it’s a shock. Some of my favorite people have been brought down by this, and he’s not one of them.
What do you make of the fact, though, that people are waiting for you to speak?
STREEP I don’t want to hear about the silence of me. I want to hear about the silence of Melania Trump. I want to hear from her. She has so much that’s valuable to say. And so does Ivanka. I want her to speak now.
She won her first Oscar nearly 40 years ago. She’s been a Hollywood institution ever since. Weinstein’s degeneracy was as open a secret as open secrets get given his own longevity in the industry and the sheer number of victims who’ve alleged abuse by him, up to and including forcible rape. Streep seems to admit that she’d heard rumors — “So much gossip” — but what did she do about that? If your producer buddy’s name keeps popping up in whispered stories about harassment and assault, at what point do you maybe ask around to see if there’s something to them? After the first decade? The second? Streep says later that she never knew he was abusing people and had merely heard that he had girlfriends. But “when I heard rumors about actresses, I thought that that was a way of denigrating the actress and her ability to get the job. That really raised my hackles.” Again, how many similar rumors do you need to hear before you wonder if maybe there’s something to them?
Needless to say, if every enabler is off the hook because there’s a worse enabler somewhere out there who hasn’t been grilled yet, no enabler will ever face pressure to behave better. If you want to change the culture, worry less about the color of your tuxedo and more about taking personal responsibility for your own willful blindness instead of pointing to someone else’s.
In lieu of an exit question, enjoy Paul Sorvino threatening to kick the shinola out of Weinstein when he sees him for blackballing his daughter Mira after she wouldn’t give in to his advances. Given the slow pace of the legal investigations into Weinstein’s predation, that may be America’s best bet for retribution.
