NBC News reported Thursday that Jared Kusher is now under FBI scrutiny.

Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law and one of his senior advisers, has come under FBI scrutiny in the Russia investigation, multiple U.S. officials told NBC News.

Investigators believe Kushner has significant information relevant to their inquiry, officials said. That does not mean they suspect him of a crime or intend to charge him…

The officials said Kushner is in a different category from former Trump aides Paul Manafort and Michael Flynn, who are formally considered subjects of the investigation.

Another big headline based on an anonymous source. Really this story hinges on one word: Does Kushner have significant information? We haven’t been given enough information to form an opinion about what the information is or why it might be significant.

For the sake of argument, let’s go with this for a moment. Is there anything we’ve seen recently reported that seems to jibe with this story? Well, the Post reported last week that the FBI investigation had reached into the White House.

The law enforcement investigation into possible coordination between Russia and the Trump campaign has identified a current White House official as a significant person of interest, showing that the probe is reaching into the highest levels of government, according to people familiar with the matter.

The senior White House adviser under scrutiny by investigators is someone close to the president, according to these people, who would not further identify the official.

If the Post story was referring to Kushner then the NBC report today actually seems like a bit of a walk back. Previously he was a “person of interest” but now he’s just someone with “significant information.”

If there is anything that gives me pause it’s this story from a week ago. The NY Times reported that when word of the special counsel reached the White House, most of Trump’s aides urged a conciliatory reaction, but Kushner recommended a “counterattack.” Did he do that because he was personally concerned about the investigation? Again, that’s wild speculation at this point but, if the NBC report is accurate, then Kushner is going to be drawn into this investigation.
