Video: Texas on fire, but no emergency declaration?

posted at 8:48 am on May 10, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Over two million acres have been burned in Texas in wildfires that stretch from “border to border.” Two firefighters have already died. The effort to get the fires under control threatens to overwhelm the state, but the Obama administration has thus far refused to declare Texas a federal disaster, a declaration that would allow more resources to flow into the state to fight the fires. How urgent is this for Texans? Rep. Francisco Canseco (R-TX) put together a video demanding action, and Governor Rick Perry tweeted it out last night with this message to his followers : “Welcome Obama to Texas. Up the pressure on denied disaster relief.”

Critics might be tempted to point out that Texans like their 10th-Amendment independence, but Texans also fork over a lot of tax revenue that funds federal disaster relief, too. With over 2.2 million acres destroyed already — which equates to over 3400 square miles, or roughly seven times the size of Los Angeles, 50 times the size of DC, and three times the land area of Rhode Island — a federal declaration of disaster seems warranted, and the real question is why Barack Obama hasn’t acted.

But yet, I heard on the local news this morning, that he has made St Louis a federal disaster area after one twister tore up several houses and no one was killed (fortunately) and also Missouri in general because of the flooding Mississippi (like that doesn’t happen every other year).

the real question is why Barack Obama hasn’t acted

Seriously, Ed? The man’s a Chicago thug politician. He knows only one way, pay to play. Which ain’t happening with a Republican governor and a supermajority for the GOP in the state legislature. Couple that with the 100% certainty that Texas’ electoral votes are going in the Republican column next year and he basically doesn’t give a crap what happens down here.

Doughboy on May 10, 2011 at 8:54 AM

No disaster relief for TX. Gotta save that money for public employee union bailouts.

… a federal declaration of disaster seems warranted, and the real question is why Barack Obama hasn’t acted.

Way too early in the morning to start dropping rhetorical bombs like this.

Obama will continue to dither, but as Texans we need to stop asking the feds for help that won’t come. Perry needs to go to plan B and Republicans in the congress need to start punishing Obama on the floor of the House and Senate, and in the media, for his lack of support. Illustrating the size of the land lost like Ed did is an excellent way to get people to realize how dire the situation has become.

smfoushee on May 10, 2011 at 8:56 AM

Obama is coming to El Paso to give an immigration reform speech but said his schedule was just too tight to meet with Perry. Yeah, right. He so hates us.

parteagirl on May 10, 2011 at 8:56 AM

Obama views Texas as a Republican state; plus, Texas didn’t vote for him. Thus, he doesn’t send Federal resources to Texas. It’s the Chicago way.

Obama votes in Texas come mostly from urban areas. They are not affected by these fires. There are dem voters in the danger areas though. After this snub (and it is a snub, Texans pay federal taxes as well), I wonder how Texas dems will fare in the next elections.

President Obama has made it a point to withhold assistance from communities that do not support him or his agenda. He has wasted scads of money on his lackeys, yet has unabashedly ignored lives and property of those he disagrees with.

hawkdriver on May 10, 2011 at 8:58 AM

I wonder if he’s taken even 5 seconds to consider the optics of this come 2012. For those who watched the GOP debate in South Carolina last week, the loudest reaction from the crowd came when the candidates referenced the NLRB blocking Boeing from opening a factory there. P-ssing off entire states like this is not the path is a successful reelection campaign.

Doughboy on May 10, 2011 at 9:01 AM

Why? Because Obama is a petty man child.
I don’t think you have to look far either to see that BO sees the country as an us and them. He is not a uniter and he sees the parts of the US that will not go the liberal socialist route as necessary evils not worthy of his favors unless they submit.
I’m not sure there has ever been a POTUS so unconcerned about America as a whole.

Might be time for the Republicans to propose devolving FEMA to the states via promotion of regional agencies run by coalitions of states in the region, each fully operational to take the small- to medium-sized disasters. Then these agencies can develop compacts for mutual aid and lending purposes.

Between this and the flooding on the Mississippi, and the other disasters in red states that have been ignored, I don’t see a whole lot of red states flipping like they did in 2008.

Oh, and by the way, along the southern Mississippi, those places getting flooded? Yeah, a lot of those folks are African-American. Some call it the “Black Belt.” Wouldn’t it be something if flooded-out Memphites and other black Mississippi plain residents just kind of “forget” to vote for 0bama next year?

We lost 10 miles of fence (very expensive) in a fire a few weeks ago, and just yesterday we lost all the fencing and pens on another part of the ranch. Thanks to the firefighters, we haven’t lost any livestock or buildings. The Rockhouse fire is one of the biggest fires ever fought in recent decades in the US.

This has been going on for weeks, with no end in sight. Perry says that the denial of emergency funds is purely political, and which ever party you belong to, it’s terrible to have a president who would deny emergencies based on politics.

I don’t know if Democrat Texans support him, but it’s inconsequential. It’s a Republican-heavy state. Which is why Obama doesn’t care. If he doesn’t have a prayer of winning the state, why bother helping out? I get why a petty, immature thug politician would act this way. But when you claim to the President of not the Blue States or Red States, but the United States of America, you need to put your money where your mouth is(literally).

There are big fires in Northern Mexico too, and tanker planes were flying out of San Antonio to help suppress those.

These fires are a huge, mostly uncovered story.

juliesa on May 10, 2011 at 9:21 AM

Obama’s going to the two strongest Democratic metro areas in the state – Austin and El Paso. But he will be flying over the Rockhouse Fire site on the way to Austin, which along with two other area fires have burned over 350,000 acres in the past month, including areas in two border counties (Presidio and Brewster) that are predominantly Hispanic and vote predominantly Democrat. If he wants to look out the window about 20 minutes after he leaves El Paso, he won’t have any problem seeing it, since the scar is visible from space.

At least in those two locales, Obama’s really not doing much to help his own party’s chances in 2012. Hhe and his handlers might think they’re sticking it to Perry and the GOP by not allowing disaster relief funds, since Barack’s not going to win Texas next year, but on the local level, he’s making an already weak state Democratic Party get even weaker by ticking off everyone in the fire zones but the most partisan liberal activists.

Prize for the stupidest comment this week goes to sesquipedalian, who has not the slightest clue about how large fires are fought in this country.

Whenever there are large fires out west, you will see units from all over the country helping to fight them, just as in any large disaster, where neighbors help each other.

juliesa on May 10, 2011 at 9:37 AM

That’s not the worst of it.

The fire closest to me, around Possum Kingdom Lake, is mostly out or contained thanks to some good rains. While it was still being fought, mostly by local volunteer departments and drafts of equipment from other places, people in the area did a lot to donate water, food, and other support for the firefighters.

The Feds finally got their act together to send a “task force” to coordinate the effort, and gear from elsewhere, mostly National Forests of all kinds, started coming in. After a day or so of that they sent as many of the volunteer firefighters home as they could, sneering that they didn’t have the skills needed. The real reason is that they couldn’t stand the exposure. At one point, a big team of firefighters stood and watched as the fire jumped a road and roared away, because the Fed “coordinator” wasn’t available to authorize use of the equipment. Rest breaks are mandated, don’t’cha know.

Not many lovers of the Fed left around here, outside the city centers. It ain’t just Democrats.

48 million Americans without health insurance.

put out your own fires.

Now it’s 48 million? Ar you using that higher number because of Obama’s depression economy?

Putting out our own fires is fine. All the more reason to eliminate Federal Emergency Management Agency and devolve them to the states for regional compacts so the states have the resources the Feds have by taxing state residents but not providing the services they paid for.

Small towns in Texas have volunteer firefighters. Guys who do it for free. No union pay or pensions, just the kindness of their hearts. These guys have their real jobs to do. I live in Midland, TX and there’s a grass fire every single day here and all of West Texas. Every day there is a town or parts of a town evacuated. Obama needs to pull his head out of his ass and get some relief in here just like he did for California. I’d think a little compassion for your fellow Americans in TEXAS can only be good for you, you dumb liberal jackasses.

This will come back to bite him. In hard times people tend to forgo party politics and pull together. Not our Pres**ent. The most partisan hack ever to occupy the White House.

Is there any way Congress can act on its own in this case? If so, how?
