Does the road to a Republican Senate majority run through Pennsylvania?

Dave McCormick is running again to be the Republican nominee for senator in 2024. He first ran in for senator in 2022. He was in the primary race by Trump-endorsed Dr. Mehmet Oz. Oz lost the race to John Fetterman. There may be a chance to see McCormick win this time.

McCormick is running against the sitting senior Democrat senator, Bob Casey. The Republican Party seems to be coming together in Pennsylvania to elect McCormick. That is the only way he can win – if the party unites and works to bring in both Republican and independent voters. One big help is Senator Steve Daines, chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC). The NRSC has released an ad highlighting the “Casey Cartel.”

Casey sounds like he could be a Biden. Steve Daines, as it turns out, has a way of being able to work with all factions of the Republican Party to bring about good results. He has endorsed Trump and is able to get the support of the Trump people. He is also working well with Mitch McConnell and other Republican leaders in the Senate. Daines’ leadership brings the party together and that is desperately needed as Republicans try to win back the Senate in 2024. It is very doable. We just have to do it. That starts will good candidates. McCormick is a good candidate for Pennsylvania.

“Dave McCormick has done a remarkable job of unifying the grassroots in Pennsylvania. A graduate of West Point, combat veteran and Pennsylvania job creator, Dave is exactly the type of candidate who can win both a primary and a general election in one of the most competitive states in the country. It’s great news that Dave is stepping up to serve our country once again.” NRSC chair Steve Daines wrote in a statement shared with Fox News.

Democrats have to defend 23 of the 34 Senate seats up for grabs. Three are in red states and some are in key general election battleground states, like Pennsylvania.

McCormick received criticism from Democrats in 2022 because he owns a home in Connecticut. He purchased a home in Pennsylvania in 2022 and was born and raised in Pennsylvania. He calls the criticism, that will likely resurface in this election, a distraction.

McCormick told Fox News that he was born and raised in Pennsylvania, lived most of his life there and ran a business in the state. “But like many Pennsylvanians, I’m divorced and remarried. My youngest daughter is finishing high school in Connecticut — she lives with her mom — and I’m going to go to Connecticut to see my daughter and to be a great dad,” he said.

McCormick expects to take heat from Democrats on abortion, too. Democrats will make abortion a key issue in 2024, as they did successfully in 2022. They accuse McCormick of being against exceptions – like rape, incest, and the life of the mother. He denies that.

But McCormick told Fox News that “my position hasn’t changed. I’m pro-life.” And he reiterated that “any limits on this [abortion] should be for exceptions for rape, incest, and life of the mother. That’s what I consistently said throughout the campaign [last year]. So that position hasn’t changed.”

Asked about a 15-week federal ban that some Republicans in Congress and some GOP presidential candidates support, McCormick answered, “I don’t support a national abortion ban.”

McCormick pointed out that Bob Casey doesn’t support any restrictions on abortion. Casey used to be a self-described pro-life Democrat. He changed that, though, last September when he voted with other Democrats to codify Roe v Wade.

Casey has held his Senate seat since 2007. McCormick pointed to Casey’s long career in politics and said he is the candidate who can shake up a broken Washington.

“I’m the only candidate in this race that can change Washington. … And frankly, my opponent is part of the problem,” McCormick said. “He first ran for office almost 30 years ago. Bob Casey’s not going to change Washington. Bob Casey is Washington.”

McCormick has an impressive resume.

McCormick, who grew up near Bloomsburg, is the son of Pennsylvania’s first state university system chancellor. He won a Bronze Star for his service in the first Gulf War and worked in Pittsburgh, where he ran online auction house FreeMarkets Inc. at the dawn of the tech boom.

He served in senior positions in former President George W. Bush’s administration before moving to Connecticut to work for Bridgewater.

He resigned as CEO and bought a house in Pittsburgh before running for Senate last year — although Democrats are seizing on his connections to Connecticut, including the $16 million mansion in Westport, where McCormick still spends considerable time.

As mentioned above, he spends time in Connecticut because his teenage daughter lives there with her mother.

This candidate gives me hope for taking the seat in Pennsylvania. Republicans only need 1 or 2 seats to take the majority in the Senate, depending on who wins the White House. This should be a winnable election cycle for Republicans in the Senate. Keeping the Pennsylvania Republicans together to elect a strong candidate is a good step in the right direction. Republicans are tired of losing.

In the meantime, Senator Fetterman is wearing a mask of Bob Casey.
