Spineless Drew Barrymore caves to the outraged mob

Anyone seen Drew Barrymore’s spine? She seems to have lost it.

Just when I think someone in the coastal elite bubble finds the courage to do the right thing, it blows up. That is what happened in the Drew Barrymore story. She boldly struck out on her own and announced that she was bringing back her daytime talk show even though the WGA and SAG-AFTRA unions are on strike. I applauded her decision. So, of course, she caved.

Believe them when they tell you who they are.

Barrymore was blasted on social media by others in the entertainment industry when she made her announcement. She said she was thinking of the employees of the show who are not under the WGA rules. There are lots of people who work on the talk show who are not writers or in contracts that are beholden to writers. Those people are without work, through no fault of their own, while the strike continues. If anyone is aware of that, it is someone like Drew Barrymore who has been involved in show business since she was a very young child.

But, when the blowback began on social media and Hollywood people began to blast her, she issued a rambling, tearful apology and tried to have it both ways. She profusely apologized for her decision – she was being a good businesswoman and employer – and said that she understands the reason for the strike but it was time for her show to get back to work. She pledged to abide by union rules and remain in compliance. She said she would not use writers while the union is on strike. She said all the right things but that wasn’t enough.

Her talk show was set to premiere with its new season on Monday, September 18.

Instead of bravely forging ahead and sticking up for herself and her people on the show, she ended up caving Saturday night. All that drama and the result is that the show is still off the air. How Hollywood of her. She has three union writers on her show. I may not be understanding it all correctly but we’re talking about a daytime talk show. She could have gone on with the show. Drew is a professional entertainer. She conducts interviews on her show. C’mon.

Cave, she did. She published her flip-flop on Instagram.

Announcing that she was going back on her decision after the backlash, she wrote on Instagram on Sunday: ‘I have listened to everyone, and I am making the decision to pause the show’s premiere until the strike is over.

‘I have no words to express my deepest apologies to anyone I have hurt and, of course, to our incredible team who works on the show and has made it what it is today.

‘We really tried to find our way forward. And I truly hope for a resolution for the entire industry soon.’

That’s a shame. She could have done what Bill Maher is doing and show some independence from Hollywood groupthink. Instead, she let them bully her into submission.
