Chicago mayor moves illegal aliens from police stations to tents while O'Hare is used as shelter

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is moving illegal aliens out of police stations and into ‘base camps’, a.k.a. tents. Like other sanctuary city Democrat mayors, Johnson is scrambling to provide for the illegals who have taken him up on accepting the city’s hospitality.

It’s become blindingly clear that progressive Democrats are the biggest hypocrites around. They have talked the talk of sanctuary city accolades as they preach that all are welcome in their cities, regardless of legal status. Then an interesting thing happened. Joe Biden opened the southern border on the very first day of his term and now about 7 million illegal immigrants have crossed the border. That doesn’t include the hundreds of thousands of ‘gotaways’ – those who didn’t turn themselves in and make an asylum claim. The virtue-signaling from sanctuary city mayors quickly ended when border state governors like Greg Abbott in Texas and former Governor Doug Ducey of Arizona began bussing the illegal aliens to their cities. Governor DeSantis joined in the effort. Suddenly, there is just no room in sanctuary cities – all large cities – for the illegal aliens. The buses only deliver 40-50 people per trip. The dirty little secret is that DHS has been flying and bussing illegal aliens all across the country since they began flooding across the border. The Democrat mayors didn’t say a peep about that. It was only when red state governors acted to draw attention to the humanitarian crisis at the southern border that they began to object.

Illegal aliens have been taking shelter in police stations in Chicago. The Chicago police union president recently spoke out and said the police officers are tired of acting as babysitters in the police stations and suggested that the illegals be housed at City Hall. Let the policy-makers deal with the situation they created.

On Friday, Mayor Johnson announced his plans to establish migrant camps throughout the city. The plan is to move nearly 1,600 currently living inside Chicago police stations into large tents before winter. Ah, yes. Tent-dwelling during winter in Chicago. What could possibly go wrong?

The mayor said he will “move with expediency” to transition asylum-seekers into “more suitable” base camps as migrants wait for spots in city-run shelters. As of a week ago, 1,576 migrants were living in Chicago police stations and another 418 were sleeping inside O’Hare International Airport, according to city data.

“We’ve identified multiple locations around the city that can be suitable to treat the families of individuals, who by law are seeking asylum constitutionally, legally, to have a place that recognizes their dignity,” Johnson said.

And, yes, the residents of Chicago will foot the bill. The mayor hasn’t explained where the tents will be set up or the details of the proposed operation but he did suggest that new or increased levies will be needed to pay for the services.

“So the sacrifices that will be required in this moment will be necessary from all of us, every single level of government,” Johnson said at an unrelated news conference Friday when asked about whether additional revenue will be needed.

“Look, I can tell you that the cost of inaction will be far more substantial,” he said. “The point here is: Police stations being used as landing zones, that’s what I inherited. And I’ve said that from the very beginning that this is not dignified. So my plan is to move, with expediency, families out of police stations into housing and shelter that’s more suitable.”

Some Chicago aldermen are objecting to such plans. One said he would be hard-pressed to ask his constituents to pay more to provide services for illegal aliens. He suggested that the city refuse to accept the migrant buses and turn them back. That would be interesting, right? Imagine illegals being stopped from getting off the bus and, instead, turned back to wherever they came from. They sign documents that say they voluntarily choose to travel to these cities. Illegal aliens don’t all want to stay in Texas or Arizona when they cross the border. Many hope to get to New York or Los Angeles or even Chicago so that they can reunite with family.

Each of the 50 City Council members will be asked to identify two to three “suitable sites” in their wards that can shelter at least 200 migrants and have access to showers, according to briefing materials. The tents are intended to house 500 to 1,000 migrants, Hopkins said.

But Hopkins said the city is “already over capacity,” noting he was informed by other officials that five buses were on their way from Texas as of Friday afternoon.

“We expect they’ll arrive over the weekend, and there literally is not a single bed available to accommodate them,” Hopkins said. “There isn’t even floor space for another sleeping bag in a police station. There is literally nowhere for them to go, and yet we know they’re on their way.”

Senator Dick Durbin, a Democrat, was present for the mayor’s announcement. He praised the mayor and blamed Congress for not acting on comprehensive immigration reform. That’s code for blanket amnesty.

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, who also was present at the CTA announcement, defended Johnson’s leadership and said he and other Democrats in Congress have a comprehensive immigration bill ready but the migrant crisis “has been manipulated for political purposes at the expense of these poor people.”

“(The mayor) is trying to make the best of a very challenging situation,” Durbin said. “The bottom line is this: We are in this predicament today because of the failure of the United States Congress and the president over 30 years to pass immigration reform in Washington. That’s why we face these extreme situations.”

If the president doesn’t act to close up the border, it doesn’t matter what Congress does. There are already plenty of laws on the books that this administration is not enforcing. The Biden border crisis is intentional. They see future Democrat voters.

Chicago’s O’Hare Airport is being used as a shelter for illegals. One reporter said that Johnson has become the ‘migrants’ mayor.’ More than 400 illegal aliens are being housed at O’Hare. That number is up from 31 at the beginning of August. They are hidden from public view behind black curtains. Lovely. Homeless Americans can’t stay at the airport but illegal aliens can.

Chicago reporter William Kelly said, “Mayor Johnson campaigned as the people’s mayor. Sadly, the people are telling me that he’s the migrants’ mayor.”

Kelly described the crisis as “horrifying on every level.” He describes it like a scene from “Mad Max”.

“One of the migrant shelters in Chicago is directly across the street from my building on Michigan Avenue. So I look out the window, and it’s like a scene from Mad Max every single day.

“It really is a fail on every level, the police are not able to babysit the migrants and arrest the violent criminals at the same time. And so the people of Chicago are suffering.”

Good work, progressives. This is what they asked for. It is not fair that border states are stuck with dealing with Biden’s border crisis. Biden is considering putting a Remain in Texas policy in place. That is completely unacceptable. Governor Abbott vows to increase the migrant buses to sanctuary cities if that happens.
