Rematch in Texas: Mayra Flores is running again to flip a seat in South Texas

Mayra Flores For Congress

Run, Mayra, run! Former Congresswoman Mayra Flores is ready to run again. She flipped a South Texas seat from a 100 year dominance by Democrats to Republican in 2022. She was the first Mexican-born congresswoman. Flores is running again for the seat she lost in November.

She made history in June 2022 by winning a special election in Texas’ 34th Congressional District seated in Brownsville. Republicans have set their sites on flipping South Texas from blue to red and her victory was a huge boost for Republicans. She ran for a full term last November and lost to U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez by 8.5 percentage points. The McAllen Democrat ran in the 34th congressional district after the 2021 redistricting cycle.

Last November Republicans ran Flores and two other Republican women in districts that were targeted to be flipped. Only one won, though, and Flores lost her race.

Flores is ready to rumble. No doubt she learned some valuable lessons during her last campaign, as Gonzalez ran a particularly nasty campaign against her.

“I have a lot of faith in God, in my family and my amazing team that we will flip this district and take back what is ours in 2024,” she said. “The people of South Texas, the American people, deserve to have a voice in Washington.”

Her life story is a compelling one.

Flores has described herself as pro-God, pro-family and pro-life. She was born in Burgos, Tamaulipas, Mexico, and immigrated to the United States when she was 6 years old. She became a citizen at 14.

“We were raised with strong conservative values to always put God and family first,” Flores said in the Fox interview. “We’re all about hard work. That is who we are. The Democrat Party stands against everything we stand for, and no political party is worth us putting our faith, our family values aside.”

She highlighted border security and the economy as top issues.

She is married to a Border Patrol agent. She is passionate about border security and support for Border Patrol agents who find themselves overwhelmed since Joe Biden took office. Her message on securing the border resonated with those living in her district, as they feel the effects of Biden’s border crisis every day.

Gonzalez has served in Congress since 2017. He represented the 15th Congressional District but switched when his former district became one that is more favorable for Republicans to win. That seat is the only one Republicans flipped in South Texas in November 2022. Republican Monica De La Cruz defeated Democrat Michelle Vallejo also by 8.5 percentage points. There will also be a rematch by De La Cruz and Vallejo in 2024.

The NRCC worked to recruit Flores to run again. Due to redistricting, her district is now favored for a Democrat victory. Biden won the district by 15 points in 2020. The long knives are already out from the the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

“Mayra Flores is a conspiracy theory-promoting extremist who lost #TX34 to Rep. Gonzalez by 8+ points in what was supposed to be a ‘wave year’ for House Republicans, so LOL,” tweeted Courtney Rice, communications director for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

Ugly Democrats go straight for the politics of personal destruction toward their challengers. “A conspiracy theory-promoting extremist” is pretty on-brand for Democrats looking to trash a Republican. Leftist women go particularly hard against conservative women. What happened to women supporting women, eh, DCCC?
