Pelosi at SXSW: The Grand Old Party "turned into a cult, into a thug”

Nancy Pelosi was interviewed at SXSW in Austin on Sunday. The interviewer, Evan Smith, a contributing writer at The Atlantic, is the former co-founder and CEO of The Texas Tribune. During the interview, which lasted an hour, Pelosi hit many different topics, and surprise, surprise, she found time to blast the Republican Party, saying it has “turned into a cult, into a thug.” But she isn’t anti-Republican.

What would she call the Republican Party if she was anti-Republican, then? “You’re a grand old party that has done great things. Instead, you turned into a cult, into a thug.” She was focusing on the events of January 6, of course, and blaming Trump. She criticized Fox News Host Tucker Carlson for saying the people inside the Capitol that day were mostly “sightseers”, not insurrectionists.

“Here’s the thing. We had a president of the United State who incited an insurrection,” she said about Donald Trump, “That day was as horrible as it was imagined; the assault on this temple of democracy, they made an assault on our constitution…”

“They refused to send the National Guard,” she continued, “I was a major target, but I had security that got me out of there. I was concerned about my members, the press, the staff who were traumatized, the maintenance people who maintained the Capitol as these anarchists were making poo-poo on the floor.”

“So something must be wrong with Tucker Carlson,” she said. Without naming Fox News by name, Pelosi added, “There’s money that runs a lot of that, to get more viewers…they were more enthusiastically misled by what he has said.” The Atlantic discussion today didn’t plunge into Dominion Voting System’s $1.6 billion suit against Fox News.

Did the rioters really “make an assault on our constitution?” They intended to disrupt the House with Vice President Mike Pence presiding over the certification of the election results. But, they were unsuccessful. After it was safe for them to do so, the members of the House returned and finished their business.

Pelosi would like everyone to think that all Republicans are alike and act the same. Should everyone think that all Democrats act like Antifa and the thugs and rioters during the Summer of Love in 2020? She calls the Capitol protesters “anarchists” which is ironic since the rioters and protesters from the Summer of Love were true anarchists. Potato, Potahto, eh, Nana?

On the subject of security that day, Pelosi conveniently left out that part where she played a role in planning security arrangements for that day. Funny how that happens. She could have insisted that Capitol Police and others in the intelligence community take seriously the threats that were made pre-January 6 but she didn’t. She didn’t get on the phone and demanded more security and the National Guard until she had been evacuated by her security detail. We know this as a fact because her daughter, the documentarian, just happened to be there that day and filmed her mother. She may try to act like she was an innocent bystander but that doesn’t fly.

She spoke about the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank in San Francisco. She hopes another bank will buy it before the markets open Monday. She doesn’t want the taxpayers to have to bail it out, she said. So far, I don’t think there is an appetite for that. Politicians like Senator Menendez (D-NJ), who serves on the Senate Banking Committee, were asked about a federal bailout on Sunday morning shows and he said no to that, at least for now. Everyone is keeping an eye on this bank disaster.

Pelosi blamed members of Congress for advocating for political violence. Hmm. The irony of that is the latest person to call for political violence was a far-left actress/activist, Jane Fonda. She brought up murder as a response to pro-life lawmakers. That happened Friday on The View.

Pelosi added about the surge in political violence in the country that “many people who advocate for all of this are in the Congress of the United States.” She mentioned that her husband, Paul Pelosi, who was attacked by an intruder with a hammer in their Pacific Heights, San Francisco home, was finally able to make the trip to Austin with her today.

“I was the target and he paid the price,” she said today.

The man who used a hammer on Paul Pelosi is a left-wing wackadoodle.

She hopes “for the best” from Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

Taking a brief conciliatory note, she said she was hoping “for the best” for McCarthy as he continues his first year as House speaker. “We need to listen, and I hope that Kevin will listen to other than just the very radical, right-wing fringe of his party,” she said, apparently gesturing at Trump and other election deniers. When asked about the prospect of Trump again becoming the GOP nominee in 2024, she was ready with a canned line: “If he is, we impeached him twice, and he’s gonna lose twice.” (Left unsaid was that neither impeachment resulted in Trump’s removal from office.)

More irony. Pelosi had to bend over backward to appease The Squad and other progressives in her party to move the Biden agenda along in the House. She never even had the spine to censure anti-Semitic remarks from Rep.Omar. Grandma Nancy is in need of a mirror. That’s clear after her performance at SXSW.

She called Biden a “magnificent leader” and hopes he runs for re-election. All indications are that she will get her wish. He’s running because Jill said so.
