Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke has been racking up some celebrity endorsements in recent days. On Saturday, The Chicks, formerly the Dixie Chicks, endorsed O’Rourke during their concert in The Woodlands, Texas (Houston). Some in the audience booed.

O’Rourke showed up in person to acknowledge the endorsement, unlike when Kamala Harris endorsed him, also on Saturday, in Austin during an annual Democrat Party of Texas fundraising reception. Beto is gonna Beto. He likes hangin’ with celebrities.

The Chicks endorsing O’Rourke is standard practice for them. Their concerts have turned into political rallies for Democrats. The concertgoers who booed must be new fans or not familiar with their progressive political activism. They politicize their concerts because they assume their audience shares their political beliefs.

At the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in The Woodlands on Saturday, the focus was on abortion. As I’ve said many times, abortion is the only thing Democrats have to run on and all of their surrogates have gotten the memo. Natalie Maines wore a Ruth Bader Ginsburg t-shirt; I wonder if she knew how Ginsburg felt about the Supreme Court’s original handling of Roe v Wade. I’d guess Maines was just trying to be activist chic and probably not aware that Ginsburg disapproved of how the Court ruled in 1973. Ginsburg supported abortion, don’t misunderstand, but she thought a more incremental approach to legalizing abortion was in order, instead of a nationwide ruling that invalidated antiabortion laws in dozens of states. She said the ruling should be based on the Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution. The focus should have been on gender equality instead of the right to privacy. She reasoned that the ruling would be harder to overturn if it was based on the Equal Protection Clause.

Anyway, there was some booing to be heard from the crowd.

“Let me tell you something. Do you have a mother? Do you have a sister? Do you have a daughter? Do you have a girlfriend? Vote Beto!” lead singer Natalie Maines—who wore a T-shirt with an image of Ruth Bader Ginsburg—shouted onstage to the audience, who cheered and raised their hands in response. Some started to boo. “If you have a female in your life that you care about, vote for Beto,” Maines continued. “Stand up, show up for her in November.”

Afterward, the country band with Dallas roots performed their song “Texas Man” from their 2020 album “Gaslighter.” Later in the show, the band was joined by cartoon images on the screen making fun of Gov. Greg Abbott and Sen. Ted Cruz, as well as the Supreme Court justices who voted to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Subtlety is not their strong suit.

There was a more subtle show of support the night before in Austin. There was a Beto for Texas sticker on Emily Strayer’s white grand piano. Team Beto tweeted it out.

This isn’t the only recent endorsement coming from an entertainer. Willie Nelson endorsed Beto last week at a “Vote ‘Em Out” rally in Austin. Willie always endorses O’Rourke when he runs for office. That same day, British pop star Harry Styles endorsed O’Rourke during the penultimate night of his six-day stay in Austin. He had a Beto sticker on his guitar and called him “a lovely, lovely man.” Weirdo.

On Sunday, during the fifth show of his six-night concert series at the Moody Center in Austin, Styles endorsed O’Rourke in the Texas governor race, pointing out a sticker on his guitar that read “Beto for Texas.” Screens at the Moody Center showed that O’Rourke was actually in the audience watching, waving and flashing a peace sign at Styles as the crowd cheered and whooped. Styles responded, “Just a lovely, lovely man.”.

Nothing says “Take me seriously” like a man in what looks like a polka dot onesie. Some Beto supporters relished in the fact that Governor Abbott’s daughter was in the audience that night.

The Chicks and Willie Nelson are Texans who will vote for O’Rourke. Styles, though, is just another celebrity who supports O’Rourke. He’s never had a problem garnering the entertainment industry’s money and support. This will be the third race O’Rourke will lose. He ran against Ted Cruz for senator in 2018 and lost, though the race was closer than a lot of people expected. Then, with the encouragement of people like Oprah, O’Rourke ran in the Democrat presidential primary in 2020 but dropped out before the Iowa caucuses began. He didn’t become a senator or the president so he’s now trying to be a governor. Any political office will do, apparently. He just wants power.

According to the Real Clear Politics aggregate averaging, O’Rourke is trailing Abbott by 8.6%.
