Frogxit: Harry and Meghan get what they asked for

My tolerance for the royal family in general is pretty low. Like probably half the men in the world I had a crush on Princess Diana when I was 14, not because she was a princess just because I thought she was cute (and not much older than me at the time). And beyond that moment of international interest, I pretty much tuned out the royal family.

Diana’s death years later was certainly horrible and again there was a big surge of interest and again the moment passed and I didn’t pay much attention to the family.

So the whole Prince Harry and Meghan Markle show makes no sense to me. Family tragedy aside, he is one of the most privileged people in the world and she was a TV actress who also seems to have been doing pretty well. They fell in love. They got married in 2018. And in the world of royalty, your marriage is when the family loads you down with lands and titles:

The Queen has today been pleased to confer a Dukedom on Prince Henry of Wales.  His titles will be Duke of Sussex, Earl of Dumbarton and Baron Kilkeel.

Prince Harry thus becomes His Royal Highness The Duke of Sussex, and Ms. Meghan Markle on marriage will become Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex.

Up through the engagement and wedding, Harry and Meghan were living in a little house called Nottingham Cottage which was on the grounds of Kensington Palace. It really is a fairly small house, about 1,300 square feet.

Once they were married the Queen offered to let the move into a part of Kensington Palace called Apartment 1 which apparently has 21 bedrooms. However, for reasons that aren’t exactly clear (to me at least) they weren’t thrilled with that option and so the Queen gave them another home called Frogmore Cottage. Frogmore is a much larger, nicer cottage which they apparently spent $3 million renovating. They moved in sometime in early 2019.

But it wasn’t long after that when Harry and Meghan decided to step away from Royal service and move to America where they could make money from books and TV specials about how horribly Meghan was treated by the royal family. But for the past couple years Frogmore Cottage was still their home base in London. And then earlier this week, King Charles told them to leave.

Harry and Meghan are getting kicked out and disgraced Prince Andrews is, supposedly being downsized into Frogmore. Naturally, this is huge international news because what could be more important than the second home of this absurdly spoiled couple?

“We can confirm the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been requested to vacate their residence at Frogmore Cottage,” said the press secretary, Ashley Hansen, who is head of communications for the couple’s foundation, Archewell.

Ms. Hansen did not provide further details about the reasons for or timing of the eviction, which was first reported on Wednesday by The Sun, a British tabloid. The Sun said that King Charles III had made the decision shortly after the publication of Harry’s memoir, “Spare,” which is replete with scorching accounts of Harry’s dysfunctional relationship with Charles, his father; and with his brother, Prince William…

The royal real estate shuffle took on added piquancy with The Sun’s report that the king had offered Frogmore Cottage to Prince Andrew, his disgraced younger brother. That would give Andrew a home after he downsizes from his much larger house, Royal Lodge, which is also in a sprawling park near Windsor Castle.

Fox News is reporting their are rumors that Harry and Meghan might ask to be reimbursed for the money they put into renovations. To be clear, British taxpayers initially paid for the $3 million in renovations but after Harry and Meghan abandoned official duties they paid that money back. Now they may be regretting that.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may demand that millions spent on renovations be returned to them now that they’ve been evicted from Frogmore Cottage, according to a new report…

One royal expert slammed Harry and Markle as being “out of touch with reality” if they decide to ask for a reimbursement.

“Even Aesop knew back in 260 BC ‘Be careful what you wish for.’ H&M [Harry and Meghan] declared wanting to live a more ‘normal’ life, well there are consequences,” royal commentator Hilary Fordwich told Fox News Digital. “The speculation that they expect to be reimbursed for either renovations or their ‘rent’ is the sentiment of someone who has no clue what the consequences of their actions are, because they are so incredibly out of touch with reality.”

But other experts Fox News spoke to thought the request sounded reasonable since the home wasn’t really suitable to live in prior to the renovations. In other words, if the plan was to move Andrew in then someone would have needed to spend some money to make the place livable. Another royal expert suggested that Harry and Meghan didn’t have much to complain about given that their wedding cost the taxpayers $30 million and they didn’t pay for any of it. “If it is an even balance sheet they seek, perhaps the King can deduct the price of the Frogmore Cottage renovations and send an invoice for the cost of the wedding,” he suggested.

For me the bottom line is that I’m tired of hearing about these two. And this weeklong story in particular feels like a bit too much. They wanted to leave the royal equivalent of public service. They wanted to live a normal (albeit very wealthy) life in America. So why should they get to keep a house on a royal estate? The truth is they should have given that up the moment they left the country to make their fortune abroad. King Charles is right to take it from them. Now I would really appreciate it if we could go back to not hearing about any of these people for 7-10 years. Can we do that, please?
