A New York Times story published over the weekend says that 31 people hired for top positions by Mayor Bill de Blasio have left since 2014. Of those 31 people, 22 were women. The Times interviewed “a dozen women” to find out why so many of them were abandoning de Blasio. One reason given for the exodus was the mayor’s condescending tone and penchant for belittling people who work for him:

Another factor cited by some who frequently dealt with the mayor involved his personality; he often lectures his staff during meetings in what people describe as a condescending tone, and he is known for berating or belittling subordinates in front of others or shooting off emails criticizing them in brusque terms.

Nearly everyone experiences this, the women said, but they suggested that women may have less patience.

“You’re at a point in your career where, why should you put up with the nonsense,” said one woman who left a senior job at City Hall. “If you came to make a change and to make a difference, your tolerance is going to be a lot lower than if you just came for the title.”

Another woman, Lindsay Scola, told the Times the work environment at City Hall was “totally inhospitable.” Ms. Scola, who did scheduling for the mayor, says she felt talked down to by men in the office. Though she doesn’t blame that directly on de Blasio, she does say he was aware of the problem and “knowingly tolerated it.”

Another factor mentioned in the piece: Mayor de Blasio is “deliberative to the point of plodding.” His staff is frustrated with the pace that things get done as projects become the subject of “political strategizing.” The mayor was recently mocked as being “Full of Hot Air” by the New York Post for a series of big policy goals (closing Rikers, 100,000 new jobs) for which he seems to have few concrete details.
