Age of Enlightenment: NY university offering training for couples on how to break up

Instapundit flagged this one as a Higher Education Bubble Update and it’s taking place in New York. The State University of New York (SUNY) campus at Delhi, west of the Hudson River, is offering an important training seminar for students. They’ll want to pay attention in this class, on the off chance that they ever break up with their boyfriend or girlfriend.

SUNY school is teaching students how to properly end a relationship as part of an initiative begun this year in response to increased Title IX reports dealings with post-breakup harassment.

SUNY Delhi implemented the training at this year’s freshmen orientation but says it will continue to offer workshops concerning the issue of healthy relationships throughout the year, according to New York Magazine.

“We felt we needed more of a focus specifically on how to end a relationship because people need to know a fair amount about the importance of communication and mutual respect,” Lori Osterhoudt, campus director of counseling and health services, told the magazine.

In case that all sounds confusing, there’s a full program to explain things for the layman and a handy brochure to introduce you to BroncoCHECK. Sadly, when I looked into it further, it seems that BroncoCHECK doesn’t really have anything to do with breaking up your relationship, but is more of the new rules of the road for dating and signs that you should jump in and bust up a pair of people who look like they may be about to sneak off somewhere for a make out session. But it also offers advice on what the average student can do to “Be The Check” if they see two people arguing.

To a certain extent I can applaud the idea of communicating that students should take responsibility and get involved with helping authorities when they see crimes or violence taking place. But some of these programs apparently want to take every student on campus and place the responsibility upon them to be 24/7 hall monitors, relationship counselors and junior G-men. Good luck with that.
