Walt Disney World tells Boy Scouts to allow openly gay leaders or lose funding

posted at 6:41 pm on March 5, 2014 by Dustin Siggins

A few days ago, Disney World announced that unless Boy Scouts of America (BSA) changed its policy on openly homosexual scoutmasters – namely, they’re not allowed – by January 1, 2015, the organization would lose funding from Walt Disney.

The reason is simple – Disney says BSA violates the company’s non-discrimination policy:

Disney does not give money directly to the national organization or local BSA councils. However, through its VoluntEARS program, Disney allows employees to do volunteer work in exchange for cash donations to the charities of their choice.

Employees taking part in the VoluntEARS program will no longer be able to submit the funds to the Boy Scouts, the organization said. The new policy will not affect Walt Disney employees who volunteer with the Scouts, the company said.

….

According to Disney’s charitable giving guidelines, groups become ineligible to receive Disney funding if they “discriminate in the provision of services unlawfully or in a manner inconsistent with Disney’s policies on the basis of race, religion, color, sex, national origin, age, marital status, mental or physical ability, or sexual orientation.”

Kudos to the homosexual activist lobby, which has managed to scare Disney into making this move. As a private organization, Disney is of course entitled to withhold money from whatever organizations it chooses to, even if that decision is unwise.

However, this leads to a question: Will Disney also take money from Girl Scouts USA, which does not allow male scout leaders? Discrimination is discrimination, after all, and those men who want to lead girls on scouting trips should be given the same opportunity as women.

It’s a silly question, but so is Disney’s position that not allowing men who have sexual attractions to men to lead boys on scout trips is unfair discrimination.

Then again, this is the same company that is accused of sending money to Planned Parenthood, as well as hiding animal abuse that takes place during filming of its movies, so policies inconsistent with Disney’s official child-friendly corporate theme are hardly unusual.

DITTO.

If you wonder why it’s quite so “dangerous” for Conservatives — especially if they’re Christian — in the entertainment indusry to reveal their beliefs, wonder no longer because it really is that dangerous. One gets banned, ridiculued, refused pay, openly denigrated…

Seriously, the entertainment industry today is, indeed, “the homosexual lobby” and anyone who doesn’t like that, or associate with that, gets ruined.

I wish now that Disney never bought the rights to Marvel. Because I’m a huge fan of the Marvel Universe ( the movies / tv shows & collecting action figures)& there’s 3 Marvel cartoons that I watch on DisneyXD on Sunday mornings ( well I DVR them). At least I’m no longer a Star Wars fan anymore ( donated most of my figures & spaceships to a worthy cause) it’s a sad day in America where the militant gays like JetBoy to force those with Christian beliefs to accept their lifestyle choice or be labeled a bigot or homophobe & lose their livelihoods ( meaning being sued). I remember when the word gay used to mean being happy. Not anymore.

No, only reaching out to teenagers who believe themselves to be homosexual who are lost, anxious and depressed. My advice to such teenagers are to remain celibate and find a support group that will help you talk and determine if you think you are homosexual or not homosexual. There should be no guilt associated with being homosexual and in a long term committed relationship.

Murphy9 on March 5, 2014 at 7:51 PM

However, this leads to a question: Will Disney also take money from Girl Scouts USA, which does not allow male scout leaders? Discrimination is discrimination, after all, and those men who want to lead girls on scouting trips should be given the same opportunity as women.

It’s a silly question, but so is Disney’s position that not allowing men who have sexual attractions to men to lead boys on scout trips is unfair discrimination.

Brings to mind NM gov Susana Martinez, whose gay hairdresser has now refused to serve her, because of her stance on gay marriage, and maybe (I don’t know) for her position on the “baking a cake” controversy.

So, why is it when the gay lobby works to support policies of non-discrimination against gays, they (like the rest of the Left) often seem so bent on discriminating against those they dislike? Rather than following the Christian dictum of “do unto others as you’d like them to do unto you”, instead they follow “do unto others as they do unto you”. Or the, “if you hurt me, I’m going to hurt you” philosophy. It’s sick, all of it.

I’m a Christian so I consider homosexual acts sinful but I’m not going to ostracize them from my social circle based on that alone. If they respect/tolerate my religious beliefs and are otherwise decent people then I’m happy to reciprocate and associate with them. In fact a committed gay couple would be more respectable to me than a gay neighbor or whatever who wasn’t.

CurtZHP on March 5, 2014 at 7:57 PM

To take that one step further, I’m sure you wouldn’t let a lesbian girl scout leader take your daughter camping either.

Bitter Clinger on March 5, 2014 at 7:51 PM

Agreed, nor in this day and age where female teachers are molesting a lot more – do I feel quite comfortable sending my son off with a hetero female.

melle1228 on March 5, 2014 at 7:51 PM

I don’t think so. I don’t think this is my issue though. My issue is that I would never let a Heterosexual male “girl scout” leader take my daughter camping, and when I say I wouldn’t let my son go with a homosexual male; I see that as the same standard. Not bigoted, not double, but the same.

Time-travelling comments again. Freaks me out, man!!

And, melle, you’re very right. Plenty of Mary Kay Letourneau’s out there.

Bitter Clinger on March 5, 2014 at 7:58 PM

yah thats true reactionary christians are whining the most about being bullied and are themselves the bullies finally you guys figured it out. took you long enough

brushingmyhair on March 5, 2014 at 7:56 PM

Awww, wanna a cookie?

Bitter Clinger on March 5, 2014 at 7:58 PM

Yes, gays = baby-killing.

Sorry. No refunds.

Lanceman on March 5, 2014 at 7:11 PM

Well, isn’t that special.

JetBoy on March 5, 2014 at 7:44 PM

1. I’d bet gays support abortion at a much higher percentage than the general population.

2. I’d bet that per-capita they give more time and money to abortion rights groups including PP.

You know you’re a pretty rare person in the gay crowd.

CWchangedhisNicagain on March 5, 2014 at 7:58 PM

Does JetBoy belong on that list? He’s certainly one of the more reasonable people that can have a conversation but I thought he’s made it pretty clear during the AZ stuff that freedoms of religion, association, property, speech etc are forfeit when you enter the public square and are only maintained in the walls of your home and church.

gwelf on March 5, 2014 at 7:47 PM

If I’m to be on any list, I would be the list.

I never said any of that was forfeit. I only pointed out the difference between a clergy member working within the church, and and a lay Christian with an unaffiliated, private business…and how they are not the same under religious freedom. How are they anywhere near similar?

And don’t forget…my personal position on the baker and photog and whomever else who gets sued by some disgruntled gay couple, is that the gay couple is being ridiculous, making a mountain out of a mole hill, and needs to move the fug on. But my personal opinion, and the constitutional laws, aren’t one and the same.

JetBoy on March 5, 2014 at 7:59 PM

Bitter Clinger on March 5, 2014 at 7:58 PM

Yeah, the extra dimension to it is a challenge. I wish HA would get it fixed.

Bmore on March 5, 2014 at 7:59 PM

Question to all: Should someone be ashamed of being homosexual and in a long-term relationship?

SC.Charlie on March 5, 2014 at 7:45 PM

Yes.

CurtZHP on March 5, 2014 at 7:57 PM

I was gonna refer to it as “brushingmypubichair” but I don’t think it’s old enough to have any.

LOL– I have been involved in quite a few Hot Air time travel episodes. I wonder if I type fast enough I can go back to my 20′s. :)

melle1228 on March 5, 2014 at 8:00 PM

All the LGBTers want Tran scout leaders too, right? Can’t forget the T. Amirite?

JetBoy on March 5, 2014 at 7:44 PM

Crap. Sorry, I didn’t see your response earlier. I just get tired of the gay shit here.

But go back to that gold headline. I said something to you.

Bishop on March 5, 2014 at 8:00 PM

It’s only a little gay. Needs much more glitter to be considered very gay.

But I’m with ya on the carefree. Carefree doesn’t really need glitter.

Bishop on March 5, 2014 at 8:00 PM

Bishop, I believe that there may be a leftist using your inventiveness as cover. Its nom is Frank Lib. Have you noticed?

Bmore on March 5, 2014 at 8:03 PM

So how many families with Boy Scouts are going to boycott the Mouse House?

Face it, Disney is now a gay-supporting institution and not the family friendly place that made their fortune. They don’t even bother warning families when they have the gay-oriented weekends. Support the Mouse at your own discretion.

Happy Nomad on March 5, 2014 at 8:04 PM

brushingmyhair, are you still in your teens?
blink on March 5, 2014 at 8:03 PM

Young girl, about 18-24. Most likely, a typical young girl lipstick lesbian. Prolly cute as hell. Like Rachael Canning.

I’ll do a dance off for it. :)

melle1228 on March 5, 2014 at 8:04 PM

The hair girl is about as weak as we see.

CWchangedhisNicagain on March 5, 2014 at 8:05 PM

I think Hot Air is big enough for both Bishop and FrankLib.

blink on March 5, 2014 at 8:05 PM

I disagree. Cheap knock offs devalue the authentic.

During the open-registration thread, there was a poster named Archbishop. I hope that one gets used more often.

nobar on March 5, 2014 at 8:07 PM

…just to protect a relatively small percentage of straight boys. Sad.

Frank Lib on March 5, 2014 at 7:17 PM

How many times do you think Democrat politicians have trotted out the need for any and every expensive and intrusive program or regulation based on the life of one child?

Cindy Munford on March 5, 2014 at 8:08 PM

What is your question?

SC.Charlie on March 5, 2014 at 7:48 PM

Where did the phrase “sex by eight or it’s too late” come from?

WryTrvllr on March 5, 2014 at 7:51 PM

Ahhh Times UP SC.

Next question, what’s the reverse gender equivalent organization?

nobar on March 5, 2014 at 8:07 PM

Forgot about him. He’s as scarce as Annoyinglittletwerk.

Lanceman on March 5, 2014 at 8:09 PM

Aren’t you an old childless gay? What do you care about the BSA? You want future homos to have that easy access you never got in your youth? This whole society is sick. – Murphy9 on March 5, 2014 at 7:51 PM

I am 62 years old. is that old to you? I don’t believe that homosexuals should have to go through what I went through back in the 1960s and early 1970s. I went through four decades of anxiety and periods of depression, attempting to praying the gay away. I have always been celibate. A promise made to my parents when I came out to them to them in 1969 when I was 18 and had just gone off to college. I am from the old school. People should not sleep around, whether they are straight or homosexual. They should seek out life partners with whom they can share their lives. Is our society overly sexualized? I would say, yes. There no current age of innocence that was present in my time.

SC.Charlie on March 5, 2014 at 8:09 PM

I’ll do a dance off for it. :)

melle1228 on March 5, 2014 at 8:04 PM

You have no idea who you’re dealing with proposing that contest… :P

PS: Bronies aren’t gay…at least not “gay” gay…

JetBoy on March 5, 2014 at 8:10 PM

JetBoy on March 5, 2014 at 7:59 PM

How are they anywhere near similar? Religious freedom is not reserved merely for clergy or activity that happens in religious rites or within the walls of a church. It was never defined as merely that. It was your right to actually live your life – out in public and in the public square – according to your religious convictions. You may disagree with those convictions but constitutionally you don’t get to dictate to someone else what their religious convictions are and curtail them.

In the case of the baker – they can reasonably feel and claim that they are being asked to celebrate and participate in something that they see as sacrilegious. They are being asked to use exercise their speech/expression and their labor to participate in something they see as sacrilegious.
