Obama lied because we can’t handle the truth
Acknowledging that reality would have been the honest thing to do. So would asking healthier and wealthier Americans to sacrifice for the greater good of ensuring every American have health-care coverage.
But doing so would have opened Obama and his democratic allies up to the charge that Obamacare would lead to widespread dislocations — and made the path to reform that much politically harder to traverse…
This is America’s schizophrenia. On the one hand the ingrained belief that centralized government power is an unqualified danger coupled with a deep fear that any new initiative will bring unacceptable disruption. On the other, a hunger, even demand, for change.
These competing impulses breed the pervasive dysfunction in American politics today. Democrats play down the negative effects of government actions; Republicans describe them in the worst possible terms. Voters want progress without sacrifice or inconvenience. Seemingly the only path to change is telling voters what they want to hear.

All of the democrats lied, and they pushed through something using as many tricks as possible, knowing the people didn’t want it, and without reading it. Not because the people couldn’t handle the truth, but because the democrats refuse to handle the truth about their failed ideology.

No, the truth the liberals dare not utter is that European sized entitlement systems require European sized rates of (regressive) taxes and economic stagnation.
Europeans generally understand that numerous and all-encompassing “social programs” come with hefty price tags that need to be paid for not just by the rich and businesses but by the middle class and even the poor (via VAT and other regressive taxation as well as an increase in the cost of living and goods).
Liberals know that Americans don’t like heavy taxation so they lie and say that massive entitlements pay for themselves (like SS is supposedly just a program you pay into then get paid out of, it’s broke of course and is a ponzi scheme, illegal if perpetrated by anyone else), will reduce the deficit (remember this claim about ObamaCare?), or can be paid for if only the rich 1% would pay their “fair share”. All liberal lies.

To keep things in perspective, European social democracies are relatively small compared to America.
Liberals are currently down playing the mere millions losing their healthcare plans that they like in favor of more expensive and restrictive plans – the number of newly uninsured in America is now equal to the population of Norway. A rounding error in ObamaCare failures is the population of the dreamy social democracy utiopia liberals pine over.

Considering the fact that Benedict Roberts has declared the penalty a “tax” and that the rates being raised on the healthy are in pursuit of another “tax” (if you’re going to call the fine a tax, then the douchebag Benedict Roberts would have to also consider the rates raised on the healthy to be a tax to support the insurance of others), the un-Constitutionality of taxing people by “health” is so clear and unambiguous that even a mental midget like Benedict Roberts couldn’t dance around it and keep his body free of tar and feathers.
Of course, I’m just reminiscing about a time that we lived in an American Constitutional Republic with the protection of the Rule of Law … not the sh!thole, third-world facsimile that we now have with the American Socialist Superstate being run in full by a retarded dog-eating d!ckhead as he issues dictats from the Oval Office about everything and anything that pops into his America-hating pea-brain only to be feted by the noble savage idolizing, suicidal masses of half-wits, including one Benedict Roberts.

Wait, are you really trying to tell me folks would’ve rejected the massive rate increases and neighbors losing their coverage in order to protect 100,000 people out of 314,000,000?
rogerb on November 11, 2013 at 11:23 AM
I hate when libs use the word “asking.” The government isn’t asking anything. The Federal government is commanding that healthier and wealthier Americans pay significantly higher premiums than they would have otherwise paid for a product that provides them little to no tangible benefits or pay a fine. Essentially, those higher premiums act as another social/welfare tax.
antifederalist on November 11, 2013 at 11:27 AM
Yes, but the hunger and demand for change to a more socialistic type of government is limited to a small percentage of the country. Thus, the necessity for all the lies.

Right on!!! You get it. Most liberals fantasize about implementing Sweden’s tax system in the US. Most uninformed voters believe that those rates apply only to the rich. They don’t know that those tax rates apply to people making around $90K per year. Even people making $63K are in the 50% tax bracket.

Reminder: Sometimes “progress” is not automatically equivalent to the expansion of Big Government, increasing centralization, increasing the unelected bureaucracy, increasing the welfare state, socialist policies, etc.
Sometimes “progress” is eliminating excessive regulations, enabling freer markets, providing consumers with more choices instead of fewer, unleashing domestic energy production, sending more authority to state, local, and community governments (federalism), etc.
In other words, in order for actual progress that helps lower and middle-income families we need to do advocate for the exact opposite of what the Progressive voters/political class desires.
Ironic…

The bias, elitism, and arrogance is strong with this one. ‘The only path’ justifies the litany of lies from Barack Obama and his apparatchiks and sycophants? This reeks of the typical progressive contempt that the American people are little more than fundamentally stupid.
Then there is the massive projection around the actions of the GOP with regard to big government that the GOP ‘…describe them in the worst possible terms.’
Worst possible terms? Based on what we’ve seen in the last 7 weeks, just how wrong was Senator Mike Enzi or Senator Ted Cruz regarding Obamacare’s launch? How wrong are the fiscal conservatives regarding the failure of Obama’s stimulus and economic policies to actually ignite a non-stagnant economic recovery?
Who uses the worst possible terms? The Democrats – War on Women, the fearmongering and demonization of conservatives over their efforts to limit spending and entitlements.
Cohen’s column, basically, is little more than smug drivel to excuse a lie far worse than that told by Nixon over a 3rd rate failed burglary.

Because liars lie.
davidk on November 11, 2013 at 12:20 PM
Sorry to be crass, Michael Cohen (and anyone else), but the answer is no. Consider it a natural thinning of the herd. In our society, economic mobility and equality of opportunity, not equality of outcome, are the goals. Poverty–and the resulting limited resources–aren’t supposed to be perpetual. Why not use relatively short-term means of charitable assistance offered by local, non-governmental charitable associations? Get people relying on the concentric circles of charity: immediate family, extended family, friends, associates in any organizations to which you may belong, and, finally, the local, non-governmental charitable associations. It’s much more difficult relying on the assistance of others when you have to look them in the eye and repeatedly ask.
BuckeyeSam on November 11, 2013 at 12:30 PM
Exactly. Because if they were doing anything like asking they wouldn’t LIE to you to advance it.
“Well we can’t get our way if we lay all the cards on the table and ask you to agree–so we had to lie.” With liberals it’s always about them getting their way.

Obama lied because he isn’t interested in the truth
Bmore on November 11, 2013 at 12:34 PM
He lied, because it is part of the plan
for America’s destruction.
“Obamacare isn’t about health care. It’s about bankrupting the middle class and addicting it to government dependency. It’s about redistributing wealth from the middle class and small business to Obama’s voters (the poor and unions). Its goal is to wipe out the last vestiges of middle class America, creating a two-class society: the super rich and the poor (both beholden to Obama).”
bazil9 on November 11, 2013 at 12:38 PM
Something similar to the attitude of Cohen is starting to rise up over the end of the 2009 porkulus boost to food stamp payments, which will result in about a $36 per month reduction for a family of four. Progressives are decrying this reduction and already making cases about the suffering of families as their monthly food stamp assistance drops 5%.
There is little attention made towards having those in need look to private charitable organizations and food banks, just more demands for higher benefits.
Yet, those demanding for a return of the ‘temporary’ boost are also selectively ignoring the actions of Obama to shift funds from food stamps to Michelle’s pet project on healthy eating.
Perhaps the progressives forget about the private charities because, overall, progressives give far less to private charities as part of their vision where the government is the entity responsible. But throughout this country’s history, there have always been those in need of assistance. But except for the last half century, that assistance was largely done on a temporary basis, a hand up, by private charities. There was no cycle of dependency created – or the societal impacts from that cycle.

Obamacare was never really intended to ‘fix’ the challenges we are facing within the healthcare industry. One of the goals was to have the government seize control of 1/6th of the economy. Another goal was to use this control to expand and accelerate their efforts to redistribute wealth – ‘fixing’ what they see as an unfair and unjust system in an unfair and unjust country.
And this is to expand on $2T in wealth that was redistributed in 2012…

In the regulations written by HHS, and published in June 2010, they included their estimates on those who would losing their plans under both the employer and individual mandate.
In order to make Obamacare ‘work’, the Administration has to send as many people into the exchanges as possible. This not only makes the pool larger to protect against adverse risk, but also maximizes the funds that would be available to fuel subsidies (wealth redistribution).
They knew the statements from the President was a lie – and remained a lie. They never corrected the lie because they didn’t think they would be called on it – and if called on it, the ramifications would be minor because of the sycophants in the media. To the progressives, it’s all about the ends justifying the means.
