But in an appeal to Republicans, it would also extend to 10 years, from 8, the amount of time that illegal immigrants must wait before receiving permission to work in the United States permanently.

So...they can work right now, but have to wait 10 years before that status is permanent?

millions who are living in fear of deportation

What a crock.

Obama is not even deporting illegal alien criminals now. ICE just last week relased thousands of illegal aliens who had been arrested and jailed for crimes like assault and child molestation and burglary. Released back into U.S. neighborhoods; not released to their home countries.

This BS about how we must do something immediately about illegal immigration because we can't have millions of illegals living in fear of deportation is such total media bull$hit. Nobody, including illegal aliens who are repeat criminal offenders in the U.S., in living in fear of deportation as long as Obama is in office.

No.

Still waiting on word for how granting the current illegals a legal status will not result in millions upon millions of new illegals.

Also, is it 10 years starting from today, or is it that they have to prove they have been here 10 years?

Then there is the new mad rush for people to get into the country to start their 10 year clock ticking.

And, during that 10 years they are here illegally, if we catch them, do we let them go to finish their illegal 10 years? Are they receiving entitlements, public schooling, medical care during this time? Are they working illegally? Are we citing and fining the employers?

In what universe is this considered an intelligent policy? In what way is this good policy for the U.S.? I understand it may be good policy for the illegals and it is certainly great political strategy for the dems - who the illegals turned citizens will overwhelmingly vote for. But exactly what benefit does the U.S. derive out of making millions of uneducated, unskilled people legal immigrants and impliedly inviting millions upon millions more uneducated, unskilled people to come here illegally? How is that good policy?

If America needs immigrants - fine. State that and change the immigration laws so that we allow more people to immigrate here legally that we do background checks on, make sure are educated and can earn enough to take care of themselves and their families with no gov't handouts. You know, make a legitimate, rational policy and then actually apply that policy through laws and enforcement.

It is not as if the illegals who are currently here are the only possible immigrants we can get. If we want more immigration, we can open up the spigot and get as many people as we want, and we can set our standards quite a bit higher than unskilled, uneducated people.

The fact that we don't do that and only talk about the illegals makes it clear that this is all about politics and has nothing to do with what is good for the U.S. in the long run. And, that makes the GOP the stupidest people on earth. Hispanics are never going to vote for the GOP in a majority. So, the more we agree to give the vote to, the less likely the GOP will win elections. The idea that granting some form of amnesty will change that result is sheer lunacy and not supported by an iota of evidence.

The "you can't not make them citizens because of the outcry!" thing is a sham.

The only thing illegal immigrants care about is the money. Sure, La Raza and other liaisons with the Democratic Party will be up in arms, but the illegals won't fight to vote for the same reason they would all vote Democrat if they could: they want the cash and they could care less about anything else.
