It sure would be crazy to approve the Keystone pipeline
I HOPE the president turns down the Keystone XL oil pipeline. (Who wants the U.S. to facilitate the dirtiest extraction of the dirtiest crude from tar sands in Canada’s far north?) But I don’t think he will. So I hope that Bill McKibben and his 350.org coalition go crazy. I’m talking chain-themselves-to-the-White-House-fence-stop-traffic-at-the-Capitol kind of crazy, because I think if we all make enough noise about this, we might be able to trade a lousy Keystone pipeline for some really good systemic responses to climate change. We don’t get such an opportunity often — namely, a second-term Democratic president who is under heavy pressure to approve a pipeline to create some jobs but who also has a green base that he can’t ignore. So cue up the protests, and pay no attention to people counseling rational and mature behavior. We need the president to be able to say to the G.O.P. oil lobby, “I’m going to approve this, but it will kill me with my base. Sasha and Malia won’t even be talking to me, so I’ve got to get something really big in return.”

Really, Tommie, really?
Man, the New York Times should definitely be on its own “Best Sellers List — Fiction.”
ProfShadow on March 10, 2013 at 7:18 PM
Sorry Tom… You sound stupid now.
brewcrew67 on March 10, 2013 at 7:19 PM
Every get the feeling that Tommy’s Chinese handlers tell him what to say?
Blake on March 10, 2013 at 7:22 PM
If we don’t take the oil, it will go to China. Mr. Friedman, which country has better environmental controls for manufacturing and consumption? China still has millions of two-stroke engines.
If you’re really concerned about the world environment, you’d be for the pipeline.
hepcat on March 10, 2013 at 7:24 PM
Wait, ain’t this the same nice fellow who lives in that very nice mansion in New York? Who really has no problems with things that never affect him?
arnold ziffel on March 10, 2013 at 7:26 PM
Someone sincerely needs to slap the stupid out of this guy.
squint on March 10, 2013 at 7:30 PM
Tom is not only dumb to say that, Friedman doesn’t have the best interests of the country at heart.
Sometimes, I wonder if he’s receiving money from foreign sources to take the positions he does.
Dusty on March 10, 2013 at 7:34 PM
Rational and mature behavior is not a liberal strong suit, anyway.
The Rogue Tomato on March 10, 2013 at 7:34 PM
Agreed, because Tom and I both know that all the energy and devices which are derived from oil can be gotten from wind and Unicorn crap instead.
Go live in your communinst utopia, Frieda ol’ boy.
Bishop on March 10, 2013 at 7:34 PM
That’s impossible.

Now? When has he ever not sounded stupid?

If only we were China for a day, right Tom? This guy should have “Craftsman” tattooed across his forehead because he’s a complete toolbox.
jnelchef on March 10, 2013 at 7:44 PM
Tom “I’ve got enough money that high gas prices don’t bother me” Friedman.
Tom “screw the poor and middle classes” Friedman.

Don’t you just love being lectured about energy consumption from a guy who lives in a friggin’ castle…?
NeoKong on March 10, 2013 at 8:01 PM
What a smuck.
Being a little obtuse aren’t we Tommyboy.
D-fusit on March 10, 2013 at 8:05 PM
If Friedman and the NY Times are against the Keystone pipeline, then it must be the right thing to do.

According to Wonkette, this is Friedman’s house.

It’s more like two mansions. Imagine how much fuel it takes to heat that pool.

we need to stop doing eyerolls and snark with Tom and his fellow travelers. McKibben and naomi klein have big plans for us.
here’s one of their friends
we should not treat these people as dumb. They are radical. They’ve always been radical. The front-men like Tom are just the nice doormen to a dystopia that we don’t want
while you are getting ready for August…you can start here

It’s almost as if Friedman wants that oil to go to China.
Oh, wait…
Wanderlust on March 10, 2013 at 8:55 PM
This idiot needs to get out of his isolated northeast mansion and see that there are people in the US other than rich coastal liberals and they deserve employment and opportunities. Major portions of the population are suffering from unemployment and underemployment. Income levels are down and the prices of gas, food and other necessities are way up. Boomers are watching the value of their paltry 401ks dissipate and are giving up retirement, younger people can’t find jobs even with great credentials. The economic situation sucks.
Energy production offers us an incredible way to give people jobs, boost our economy and minimize our dependence on foreign oil. But, if you live in the Bos-Wash and move in pampered, sheltered little parochial enclaves, you’re not worried about the little people.
obladioblada on March 10, 2013 at 9:07 PM
Oh no! His (B.O.’s) own daughters won’t speak to him if he approves it!
Why does anyone take Tom Friedman (or B.O. for that matter) seriously anymore? (Rhetorical question:)
Clink on March 10, 2013 at 9:28 PM
The OIL IS GOING TO BE USED ANYWAY Tom! Let’s just use more oil to ship it to another continent while also using even more oil to ship in more oil from another continent to us. Cool, great idea.

Tom Friedman: Luddite
Tom Friedman: The only guy I know whose book can get all his facts right, then come up with a completely unsupported/contradictory conclusion.

Going to create novelty ball caps with a giant, pale, rump right up front. That way everyone can buy one from me and send this asshat an official asshat. Million $ idea.
But that’s for tomorrow. Walking Dead is on right now.

So what will blocking Keystone do?
1) The Oil will be used anyhow… possibly overseas. So instead of using it here, we’ll burn more CO2 getting it elsewhere…
Block the pipeline, more CO2.
2) Jobs will be added for building the pipeline, maintaining the pipeline, and processing the oil.
Block the pipeline, remove jobs from the US.
3) Pipelines are the safest way to transport oil; but it will be shipped to China.
Block the pipeline, INCREASE oil spills.
So we want you to pass a bill to reduce CO2, create jobs, and reduce oil spills… and your answer is “SURE, but what do WE get out of it?”.
You know what, block the pipeline. I’m not bribing you to take something beneficial to you AND everyone else.
gekkobear on March 11, 2013 at 1:35 AM
No, we should get the Keystone XL for free.
