Opposing Hagel was a matter of principle
In fact, failing to oppose a nominee who has said what Hagel has said, and who stands for what Hagel stands for, would’ve been an open acknowledgment that his words and his stands were acceptable. They were not. They are not.
Obviously, Hagel’s shift from supporting the war in Iraq to opposing it was in no way disqualifying; the president himself opposed the war from the outset and both his secretaries of state voted for it before they spoke out against it.
What was disqualifying was just how spectacularly wrongheaded Hagel was about the “surge” in Iraq. At the time it was proposed, he said that the surgewas the worst foreign-policy disaster since Vietnam. In fact, it later proved among the most successful military turnarounds in history.

With respect, no it wasn’t. It was a matter of basic duty of the Senate to make sure the Secretary of Defense is competent to operate an ATM.
Principle defers to the President. America needs a SecDef, and the SecDef is appointed by Obama, and America elected Obama, so America should get the SecDef it deserves. But even for a country that reelected Obama, America deserved better than Hagel, and I don’t make that statement lightly. Isn’t there anyone smarter than a toaster among Obama’s cultural-suicidal self-flagellating peacenik Jew-hating loons? I’m dead serious in that I would give at least passing consideration to Reverend Wright.

Ummmm…deference to the President on appointees shouldn’t extend so far as allowing an obviously unqualified person to hold a post.
The Republicans folded like cheap suits.

Those Republicans who supported Hagel are derelict in their duty to the people, who have the right to expect that they come first before “comity” and “deference”. Of course the Democrats are merely the same old swine as always.
