McCain: Immigration reform won’t hurt the GOP at the polls
“I think it’s going to be OK, as long as they are satisfied we have effective control over our border,” he told CNN Chief Political Correspondent Candy Crowley on “State of the Union.”…
That plan includes a pathway to citizenship that hinges on bolstering border security, something McCain said was necessary and supported by the American people.
“Just because they broke the law doesn’t mean they’re condemned forever to a twilight status,” he said. “I believe that most Americans feel that for these people who have come illegally, as long as they pay back taxes, pay a fine, learn English and get behind everybody else, that’s a key element of it. And most Americans now realize we can’t have 11 million people sit in the twilight, the shadows of America, forever.”

McCain is simply out of his mind.
20 million new democrat voters will destroy this country, that’s a plain fact.

Boy, it’s a good thing they didn’t run some Tea Party nut down there in Arizona, then a Democrat might have won.
HitNRun on February 24, 2013 at 12:39 PM
Even if you’re for amnesty, why do those receiving it have the right to go all the way to citizen status? Isn’t permanent residency enough? Why reward their lawbreaking with suffrage?
steebo77 on February 24, 2013 at 12:41 PM
Sure we can. Other people who choose to be criminals do it all the time.
James on February 24, 2013 at 12:43 PM
IF mccain or any other human in dc thinks that a fence is going to be built, they are out of their ever loving mind!
AND mccain, you don’t think the gop will be hurt at the polls if they vote for illegal aliens, GUESS we will just see come funding and voting time by citizens for those who voted for this?

letget on February 24, 2013 at 12:45 PM
I’ve never heard him require those before. Reagan didn’t.
Back taxes? A fine? Good luck, unless your fine is symbolic and it’s about 100 bucks. If it’s a prohibitive amount they’ll just remain illegal.
Marcus on February 24, 2013 at 12:48 PM
McCain has shown throughout his years in Congress that what he thinks usually turns out to be wrong.
Dusty on February 24, 2013 at 12:48 PM
No way the courts would ever allow it, and you know it. You could NEVER get away with telling someone they can stay but they are forever shut out of the political process.
It would be called the new “three fifths compromise”, and rightly so, except it would be “zero-fifths”, and topple over in the first court it came to.
La Raza WANTS you to think you can get away with that. MALDEF would LOVE that idea to get around.
Anyone who advocates this is in reality an amnesty supporter, because they know just as well as anyone else that these people would get the vote as soon as they wanted it, regardless of the law under which they were legalized.
That’s what Sarah Palin refused to get thru her pretty little cement head.
She tried to act as though this was solvable thru a pretend partial amnesty. But she knew damn well it wasn’t and so she was an amnesty supporter a la McCain.
Screw all of the amnesty supporters, pretend or otherwise….. No legal status period.
Or we’re finished.
rightwingyahooo on February 24, 2013 at 12:49 PM
Let them remain illegal, until they voluntarily submit to the law be leaving and returning legally, or are deported, or pass away.
NEVER
LEGALIZE
ILLEGALS
period.
rightwingyahooo on February 24, 2013 at 12:51 PM
No one ever has a good answer for how the backed taxes will be calculated, since most illegals are paid in cash with little official bookkeeping.
Granted, there is a sizable number of illegals who pay income taxes each year in anticipation of amnesty, but it’s all self-reported to the IRS, so, in many cases, not even accurate.
steebo77 on February 24, 2013 at 12:54 PM
Yes, President McLame has shown us how well he can predict what will happen at the polls…
What a maroon.

They’ll be allowed to claim hardship, which traditionally would have ensured deportation, but will now virtually guarantee legal status.
steebo77 on February 24, 2013 at 12:56 PM
IMO McCain’s stand on immigration was a major reason he lost to Obama in 2008.

Thus ends the ‘our economy needs these people’ argument.
James on February 24, 2013 at 12:59 PM
I’m taking bets on what will be the punchline: “the honor system” or “since they’re all in the lower half of the country, they didn’t owe any taxes anyway!”

DEPORT MCCAIN!
Blake on February 24, 2013 at 1:00 PM
the problem as I see it is once we “deal with” these 16 million there is nothing to stop the next 16 million from coming here taking over the jobs of these new citizens and under cutting them.
I would rather see the USA take over mexico and be down with it.
unseen on February 24, 2013 at 1:02 PM
Projection is not just for breakfast. I’ll bite — how do you get illegals to step out of the shadows and get on the grid?
And if it’s enforcement only, does it only apply to Mexicans, or also to that cute little Swedish au pair who overstayed her visa?
And when are we going to punish the Pilgrims for not having their proper papers in order when they arrived?
John the Libertarian on February 24, 2013 at 1:02 PM
No hatred. It’s really a rather stupid remark honestly, considering what’s at stake….
rightwingyahooo on February 24, 2013 at 1:03 PM
More utter crap. We’d lose elections far worse than with amnesty, and by what right would we invade and annex?
Man, I’ve seen you post some dumbass crap, but that takes the cake.
rightwingyahooo on February 24, 2013 at 1:04 PM
I think it’s clear by now, given Steebo77′s and HondaV65, and unseen’s remarks, that the Pro-Palin and Pro-Perry people were NOT The sharpest knives in the drawer.
Like their candidate…..

Cite the indian law that they broke, please?
James on February 24, 2013 at 1:06 PM
They did, actually, have their papers in order. They were granted permission to settle by the Virginia Company (which, in turn, had a royal charter).
History is hard.
steebo77 on February 24, 2013 at 1:06 PM
McVain and the GOP amnesties don’t realizee most of the illegals just want green cards. That will entitle them to bennies. If they have kids born here, the kids can vote for the parents’ continued benefits.

I think that the Mexican economy is on the rise and ours is on the decline. I expect to see the immigration problem resolve itself as more and more Mexicans find opportunities South of our border than North.
As an aside, for reasons neither economic nor political, within a year, I am planning on immigrating to Mexico myself!

rightwingyahooo on February 24, 2013 at 1:54 PM
No one has (publicly) explained any of the massive bureaucratic construct that will be required to process 10-30 million illegals. If each illegal takes 2 day to process then that = ~80000 years of man power. You would need 100000 bureaucrats (150 illegals each) working a full year to process them.
And is that 2 days is a long enough period of time? I would think that, if you are diligent, you’d end up spending more the 2 days time interviewing former employers, visiting the applicant at thier residence, checking medical records, probably having an actual physical check up …
But all that is in an ideal situation and the FEDS never match the ideal. In the end it will not be 2 days per illegal. It will be a few hours and the background checks will be flimsy and subject to manipulation. There will be unintended consequences. And our borders will be rendered meaningless. Anyone in the world who wants legal status, and who can pass for Mexican, will probably be able get it through some shady middle man.

Of late you are shockingly out of tune with your historical self on HA.
When they arrived the US was not a sovereign republic, with borders and laws…never mind. This is too wasteful. It’s more fun arguing with getalife and lester.
Schadenfreude on February 24, 2013 at 2:23 PM
The laws apply to/must be enforced by/for ALL in a civilized country. Otherwise it’s the same as Mexico or Egypt. Both are now democracies.
There is NO hope for the US because the right enables the left. It’s the most damning for the future of the free world.
Schadenfreude on February 24, 2013 at 2:27 PM
Yeah, Teddy Kennedy said the same thing.

Let’s see… 20 million new people eligible to vote, the vast majority of whom will go to the Democratic party in a country that is already voting by narrow majorities for the Democratic party.
Yep, the GOP will do nothing but win after that!
The only way it makes sense for McCain to say that is if he thinks the GOP is already incapable of winning national elections, in which case legalizing 20 million illegals will simply run up the score while having no effect on the ultimate outcome.

Who is teaching them English anyway?
New entitlement program-learn English 101.
Will they get Rosetta Stone as part of the deal?
And who comes up with the figure 11 million?
If they are in the shadows..how do we know just how many? They have a secret tracking system?
Its a hell of a lot more then they spout.
If you don’t speak espanol, you cant get around several US cities..or get a job. I enjoyed getting lost in Miami one afternoon…Not one person could speak English and tell me how to get the hell outta there. growing up in SoCal..parts resemble Tijuana.
Good luck with that.
Pay back taxes? lmao…sure. Thought they were poor..aint gonna happen.

Fear not, open borders clown. No one will be required to do any of those things. And give me a break. You’ve never heard him require that before? They’ve been saying it since they started pushing this amnesty crap. Sure, it’s a lie, but they have been saying it, so I guess we can just conclude you’ve done no research on this issue. And for the record, Reagan DID require back taxes. Chuck Schumer got that part taken out AFTER the amnesty was passed. You know, the same Chuck Schumer who is pushing this crap AGAIN.
