We don’t need a military draft
Unfortunately, the majority of those who would be eligible for the draft today do not meet the standards for military service, for physical fitness and other reasons. People are the military’s most important asset. But if the objective is to maintain at reasonable costs an effective military force, the draft fails this test. If the objective is to require all young people to serve their country, there are numerous possible alternatives beyond making the military the only outlet.
Some critics argue that our voluntary military does not represent the society it protects. The facts refute these contentions: Recruits come from all parts of the country, from all income levels. They are all races and ethnicities. The force mirrors our diverse society, with black and Hispanic recruits reflecting their share of the population — about 15 and 17 percent of youths, respectively — and an increasing number coming from middle- and upper-income households, Defense data show.
Some have argued for the draft as a cost-cutting measure. But this is misguided. For a given level of force effectiveness, a volunteer force is less costly than a draft force. Among the reasons: A conscripted force has a higher level of turnover. Draftees tend to serve shorter terms and reenlist at lower rates. Training costs are therefore higher, and increased training time means less operational performance time. During the draft era, about one in eight stayed after his first term; with the volunteer force, closer to one in two wants to stay. A volunteer force is also more motivated. People perform better when their service is voluntary as opposed to coerced.

They don’t all need to be fighters, those who are unfit for combat can always clear minefields via the “Run That Way” method.
Michael Moore rumbling through a field would cause a seismic disruption that might very well set off all the mines, and Joy Behar could simply show up and scare the mines into detonation.

If it could save even one soldier, we have an obligation to try.
That’s the metric now, right?

Yes, and if they refuse to move we can always use a trebuchet.

Melvin Laird? Wow — long time no hear. He’s gotta be 90 years old at least.

A Free State will get plenty of defenders.
So will a Free Nation.
Conscription is for fighting old style mass wars of the Total War sort or you are in a postage stamp country like Switzerland. I’m not seeing old style Total War types of conflicts in the future and we sure ain’t a postage stamp country, save for the Incumbistani part in DC. They got plenty of small minds there. They need to get out a bit more and broaden their horizons.

We sure don’t seem to be winning many wars without one, although they do seem to last a long, long, long time.

We are in the middle of a massive drawdown of forces, such that volunteers who want to stay in are being discharged.
Why all the talk about a draft, now?

Democrats see a 40-year low in violent crime and want to change the gun laws back to where they were in the 60s when we were drowning in crime.
Democrats see a the most effective fighting force the world has ever seen and want to change it back to when a draft army lost Vietnam.
Democrats see the most innovative medical system in the world and want to change it to the socialist medicine models of the USSR where a sharp scalpel was an innovation.
Do I see a pattern here?

No kidding! I didn’t know he was still alive.

And yes, he’s 90:

I didn’t realize he was a Purple Heart recipient (served on the destroyer Maddox in WWII).

What we’re going to need soon is a “labor draft” to conscript unemployed producers (displaced by the Obama economic cataclysm) to produce government cheese and free birth control for the Looters.

Did I miss something? Why is this even an issue when we are drawing down due to moving out of Iraq, getting ready to move out of Afghanistan, and budget concerns? The draft is not needed but Selective Service for men, and soon women in my opinion, needs to be continued.
