“If she’s the nominee, I would say that this is a ‘lean Republican’ state but not a ‘solid Republican’ state”
Texas Democrats are hoping to recruit a strong candidate to pit against Perry in next year’s gubernatorial race — perhaps San Antonio Mayor (and 2012 DNC keynote speaker) Julian Castro or Wendy Davis, who is seen as a rising star in the state Senate.
But they also already have their eyes set on a more improbable target: the 2016 presidential race. And they are strangely sanguine about their chances of at least making it interesting.
“I think that in 2016 it will absolutely be considered a swing state in the sense that presidential candidates will have to campaign here, which they haven’t been doing for a long time,” Allison said. “If Hillary Clinton does run, she does really well in Texas.”
Such an optimistic vision of the former secretary of state’s chances was fueled in part by a survey conducted last month by the Democratic-affiliated Public Policy Polling, which showed Clinton besting three hypothetical Republican opponents in Texas — including Perry (by a margin of eight points).
While the knee-jerk reaction among many Republicans would be to dismiss the idea that the state could be competitive in 2016 — just four years after Mitt Romney carried it by 16 points over President Obama — Texas GOP Chairman Steve Munisteri is in no mood to sneer.

Texas will be fine UNLESS the Republicans pass amnesty. Then I expect it to quickly turn at least purple if not outright blue.

Texas vote for gun grabbers? I don’t think so.
NJ Red on February 22, 2013 at 4:36 PM
Yeah, because Texas which went to Romney by 16 points is gonna turn blue after 4 more years of Obama.
Doughboy on February 22, 2013 at 4:38 PM
Why? Democrats will DEFINITELY pass amnesty given the chance. And they want guns and gun control and on and on.

Its just the guilt coming out of the RNC and Prebusing.
They fund all the RINO’s they got John Cornyn to over fund the RINO’s and unfund the Tea Party Conservatives.
Hell it may just another hint of how far gone the RNC is regarding the Two Party Evil Money Cult.
The do have a problem at the RNC understanding the long known problem of incest.

A lot of unicorn sightings going on out there. Looks like the legalization of pots has REALLY made an impact on Democrat pundits.

Too,
Top commie Democrats do not even stop in Texas any longer.
We are the true Red flyover State.
Obama came to Dallas two times undercover and took 3 hours in a Earth First, Commie , Lie Law Crime Boss home for money and ran fact as he could back to the plane our Texas tax money pays for.
I do not think a Clinton has been in Texas for years except for Hildibeast onece and Obama’s flyover deals.
Fake words for no reason other than guilt by the RNC.

I expect Davis or Castro would no better against Perry (or Abbott) in 2016 than Bill White did against Perry in 2010, and White was a very solid candidate.

In 2016, Bill Clinton will be the same age his mother was when she died. If Bill dies or has dementia, we will find out how much of the Hillary Fan Club was hope for a Bill Restoration.
Houston eats her suburbs. The upshot is that Houston proper is almost as suburban as it is rural, and those suburbanites work in politically incorrect industries. It is harder for Houston to do what other cities have done by annoying conservatives into the suburbs, then packing election boards with union thugs. The “heat map” for Houston’s vote was very, very flat.
The 2010 drop in the Hispanic birth rate indicates to me that many illegal families are preparing to leave the US in the next few years. If we can keep amnesty at bay, they will have no reason to stay. Once the Hispanic underclass stops being so frequently refreshed, there will be a better chance at speaking to the remaining Hispanics as they move into the middle class.

In the past thirty years, Texas has elected only one democratic governor (for one term), and that happened only because her opponent admitted that he enjoyed raping women when he was younger.
And I’ll repeat myself…every single major office in Texas is held by a Republican, no exceptions.
I will concede that things could change if all white voters in Texas drop dead between now and 2016.
Erich66 on February 22, 2013 at 5:29 PM
Texas will turn bluest of the blue if amnesty is passed…especially with all those Californians being courted to move…
ladyingray on February 22, 2013 at 5:32 PM
Well, that’s kind of the point. If they pass amnesty, it would sort of remove a rationale for voting against it. What are the Democrats going to do, pass another one?
Conservatives have a list of reasons not to vote Democratic, but hot button issues are called that because they swing votes that wouldn’t otherwise swing and more to the point, tap into that majority of Americans who chooses not to vote.
