This has been the entire problem with the GOP approach.

How about you caucus, and pick two candidates you would all agree to vote for, or at least an overwhelming majority. One GOP, and one Dem. Both will, by default, be infinitely better choices than Obama’s guy. You pre-clear their passage, and guarantee a fast track nomination with your full blessing.

The comparison can then be made to the quality of Obama’s pick, and the clear alternatives. You cannot be accused of wrangling only for a GOP candidate, since you have offered one from each side. And then frame the issue as one of Obama being entrenched in his defense of an indefensible candidate, in the face of your offer of two far superior choices.
