The most conservative member of the House in 2012 was…
It’s not surprising that Akin has topped National Journal’sannual list of the most conservative representatives in the House. In the 111th Congress, he was one of the first legislators to join the Tea Party Caucus. Earlier in that term, he opposed the stimulus, health care reform, and the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. He has been consistently outspoken against abortion under any circumstance and has maintained an “A” rating from the National Rifle Association. In one of his final acts in Congress, he voted against the last-minute fiscal cliff compromise.

Baloney. They didn’t trust him anymore than me, or my wife, or our numerous friends who, even if not supporters, intended to vote for him prior to the stupid. Just among or closest dozen or so friends I know of 8 votes he lost. They didn’t vote for McCaskill, they just didn’t vote for senator. None of us donated a dime to Akin’s campaign, although at least we and 2 other couples had budgeted to donate to whomever opposed McCaskill.
The national party did no more or less than what many of in the state did.

We Republicans throw someone under the bus because they say something stupid.
Democrat politicians can kill someone (c.f. “Ted Kennedy”) and their party will still back them.
I wonder why we lose to Democrats…
Shump on February 19, 2013 at 4:00 PM
What kind of BS is this? I’ve read here over and over and over in Karl Rove threads that Akin, the “God’s little IUD” candidate, was NEVER Tea Party!
Marcus on February 19, 2013 at 4:02 PM
Just as I don’t want mass murderers advocating for positions that I agree with, I don’t want idiots like Akin advocating for positions that I agree with. The statist left relies almost exclusively on fallacy in the place of argument and they love to poison the well using these imbeciles. If a pol is too stupid to put together a coherent, semi-persuasive argument, he should just STFU.

I guarantee you if Crist or Specter had blundered right into poster-child status for the current Democrat meme, they would have been dropped like a hot potato as well. Republicans can’t afford to polish poopoo when we don’t have media help. When Akin made those remarks, he was toast. There was no recovering from that blunder, and money spent on Todd Akin was going to be wasted. There was no way this was going to work out.
Sekhmet on February 19, 2013 at 4:05 PM
Well, like I said above, there are lots of USEFUL idiots who are easily manipulated by the progressives of the land. You and your friends are some of them. You were easily led to believe something that was not true that made certain that you assisted the progressive’s goals. USEFUL IDIOTS. As evidenced by his lifelong and most recent conservative actions!
Boy, you should be soooo proud of yourself now!
astonerii on February 19, 2013 at 4:06 PM
Sigh, once again, you seem to be having reading comprehension issues. At no point did I say I agreed with what he said, but just because I disagree with what he said doesn’t mean I have to react like a raving batsh*t crazy liberal like many on our side chose to do.
xblade on February 19, 2013 at 4:07 PM
The Democrat PR firm consists of their paid consultants, 95% of the press, and 95% of Hollywood (movies and TV). GOP PR is non-existent. So, until the GOP can grow a competitive PR conglomerate, they need to be more careful than the Democrats do. Is it fair? No, but this is the real world and if you haven’t learned that life isn’t fair yet, you’re probably a Democrat.
besser tot als rot on February 19, 2013 at 4:07 PM
No, they would not have? How do I know? Because they were on record many times assisting the DEMOCRATS time, and time and time and time again. But they were also helping the elite republican establishment consolidate power in Washington, away from the center of power, the people. Arlen Spector did it with votes in Washington, Christ did it requesting federal assistance for his state.

Enjoy McCaskill – you certainly deserve her.
Todd Akin, regardless of his remarks, would have been a solid conservative vote in Senate. Now … all you guys like to pi$$ and moan about amnesty – McCaskill will vote for it brah … Akin would not have.
So enjoy the witch – like I said, you EARNED her.
HondaV65 on February 19, 2013 at 4:16 PM
So you support your supposition that Crist and Specter would have been defended if they fornicated in an upward direction…because… they’re liberals? Okay, that argument does not hang together. Please provide evidence of the major derp (as opposed to the many minor derps of which they were guilty that added up) that evoked the same to-the-death defense by the Establishment you would have for Akin?
If the entire GOP are sooper sekrit closet friends of Bill Ayers, how come they couldn’t use their nefarious hippie powers to keep Crist and Spector from a) losing and b) jumping ship?
Sekhmet on February 19, 2013 at 4:18 PM
Regardless of how stupid his comment was, this bears remembering.
GWB on February 19, 2013 at 4:23 PM
Right, because mass murderers and those ignorant of the female reproductive system are just alike, lol. If you’re looking for politicians who are never wrong about anything, you better get used to losing.
xblade on February 19, 2013 at 4:33 PM
Irrelevant. Once he was shown to be an imbecile, it was impossible for him to win. There is one person to blame for why we don’t have a solid conservative in the Senate from the great state of Arkansas. And that one person is named Todd Akin. He had two opportunities to make sure a solid conservative made it to the Senate: (1) keep his mouth shut rather than open it and remove all doubt that he is a fool; or (2) once he revealed that he is a fool, get out of the race and let someone run who could win.
besser tot als rot on February 19, 2013 at 4:33 PM
Didn’t say that.
Didn’t say that either.
besser tot als rot on February 19, 2013 at 4:35 PM
And another thing – the ignorance of “the female reproductive system” was not the problem; it was the ignorance of basic reality of US politics that was unforgivable.
besser tot als rot on February 19, 2013 at 4:37 PM
I’m sure glad there are people like besser to als rot, and sekhmet, deep diver, etc. on this board. It honestly gives me faith that not everyone who reads this website just follows the right-wing agenda whether or not it’s right or wrong, and whether or not it makes any sense. It’s one thing to support Akin’s policies…it’s another thing to give him a pass on his complete ignorance on female reproduction. Someone earlier used the term “lemmings.” Totally appropriate here.

You are an idiot! Enjoying McCaskill?
Vince on February 19, 2013 at 5:00 PM
You are also an idiot if that’s what you got from Aiken’s quote.
Vince on February 19, 2013 at 5:04 PM
Because he thinks that women don’t get pregnant when they are raped. If they get pregnant, they haven’t been legitimately raped.
That’s why.
Gelsomina on February 19, 2013 at 5:14 PM
A “solid conservative voice” who is on video showing her hoo-hah on Girls Gone Wild, or even a RINO with said videoed hoo-hah is not going to just have that crap blow over. Not if there is an (R) beside her name on the ballot. And that candidate’s loss won’t be the Tea Party’s fault, the Establishment’s fault, the Grand Conspiracy Of Closet Leftists Against True Conervatism (TM)’s fault, or even the Easter Bunny’s fault. It is the fault of the candidate for being enough of a moron to participate in such a video, compounded with the idiocy to think nobody was going to figure out it was her.
Same thing with Akin, though I think if Steelman and Brunner had arm wrestled or played “rock paper scissors” with the loser dropping out and endorsing the winner, maybe this whole thing could have been avoided.
Sekhmet on February 19, 2013 at 5:21 PM
So, if a woman happened to get pregnant she wasn’t “actually” raped. I guess she “actually” wanted it.
You, Todd Akin and Ken Salazar should get a room. There you can rant endlessly about these stupid women who don’t know when they are raped.
Gelsomina on February 19, 2013 at 5:41 PM
The problem was the “legitimate” rape, because it implies that if the woman gets pregnant she hasn’t really been raped.
Ken Salazar made the same mistake, but he has the media on his side.
Conservative candidates MUST learn that the media aren’t as tolerant with them as with liberals. On the contrary. The media just wait for conservative blunders.
The reaction of the other Republicans didn’t matter anymore. Akin was toast. The only thing they could do was to try and save their own political lives by getting as far away from him as possible. It’s unfair, but that’s how it is.
