Media wonders: Obama’s sort of our puppet-master, isn’t he?
The results are transformational. With more technology, and fewer resources at many media companies, the balance of power between the White House and press has tipped unmistakably toward the government. This is an arguably dangerous development, and one that the Obama White House — fluent in digital media and no fan of the mainstream press — has exploited cleverly and ruthlessly. And future presidents from both parties will undoubtedly copy and expand on this approach.
“The balance of power used to be much more in favor of the mainstream press,” said Mike McCurry, who was press secretary to President Bill Clinton during the Monica Lewinsky scandal. Nowadays, he said, “The White House gets away with stuff I would never have dreamed of doing. When I talk to White House reporters now, they say it’s really tough to do business with people who don’t see the need to be cooperative.”
McCurry and his colleagues in the Clinton White House were hardly above putting their boss in front of gentle questions: Clinton and Vice President Al Gore often preferred the safety of “Larry King Live” to the rhetorical combat of the briefing room. But Obama and his aides have raised it to an art form: The president has shut down interviews with many of the White House reporters who know the most and ask the toughest questions. Instead, he spends way more time talking directly to voters via friendly shows and media personalities. Why bother with The New York Times beat reporter when Obama can go on “The View”?
At the same time, this White House has greatly curtailed impromptu moments where reporters can ask tough questions after a staged event — or snap a picture of the president that was not shot by government-paid photographers.

Media wonders: Obama’s sort of our puppet-master, isn’t he?
If the President were a Republican, the “rhetorical combat” would never stop.

5 years later they realize?

Best part is that the media’s lack of interest in holding the administration accountable will be a major reason that he will be a historical failure. Every policy he has proposed to save the republic’s economy has been a Keynesian failure, yet the media has promoted each one without any critical analysis.
So 8 years later when the recovery that never happened morphs into a severe depression- with Obamacare assisting the Lead Zeppelin, they will have only themselves AND Obama to blame.
But they will fawn over Hillary to save the day. Phhhhhht
Bensonofben on February 19, 2013 at 9:57 AM
don’t worry fellas. if a republican ever wins a general election again, the power will shift back to the media.
renalin on February 19, 2013 at 9:58 AM
Huh? Oh please…the next Republican Administration (if) will never have the kind of compliant media this Admin has.

Sorriest group of journalist ever assembled to cover a president. Nothing but stenographers.

Since that whole brown-nosing thing didn’t work out so well, maybe Politico could get his attention by doing some honest and objective reporting.

Modest Proposal for the LSM:
No mentions of anything Obama until he sits down and faces the heat of their questioning. Show yourselves to be the 4th branch, rather than lapdogs for Dear Leader.
blammm on February 19, 2013 at 10:05 AM
Haha, from THE biggest two jokes at “Politico”. I take it they realize finally their audience on Moaning Schmoe these days must be about 12 people.

And who’s fault is that ultimately? Obama’s? Hardly. It’s incumbent upon the media and the American people to demand accountability. First with regard to the media, if they allow themselves to be willing accomplices of the Obama Administration in order to help advance his agenda, they can’t exactly be surprised to find themselves shut out during times where their assistance isn’t deemed necessary. If they were to treat him like they did Bush, they would no longer be treated as his loyal servants.
As for the people, in the end it’s up to them to prevent this sort of abuse. If you reward news outlets who are in bed with politicians and you constantly reelect folks who are nakedly corrupt, then this kind of behavior isn’t likely to end anytime soon.

And with dawning realization will come absolutely no action to change the relationship except a sighing “Oh well” and then business as usual.

[Media]:…and were are going to rectifiy this situation and take back control…just as soon as the next Republican President is elected. We’ve seen the errors of our ways.

Spare me, Obama is just one sly smile from getting these pawns to fall back into swoon mode.

No, it is the media who created Obama and made him a President…
mnjg on February 19, 2013 at 10:24 AM
I love how they whine about ‘not having access.’
Hey, blockheads. Start writing screaming headlines on the front pages of your papers and on your OpEd pages noting that the administration is blocking media access, is secretive, and is trying to avoid accountability. Start harassing administration officials and camp outside their homes like you did to Karl Rove.
They act like they’re powerless to do anything about this.

And as soon as they finally get access to the President, they delivered the hard-hitting, highly aggressive line of questioning:
Did you beat Tiger? How about with your handicap? What is your handicap? The American people demand answers!

CurtZHP on February 19, 2013 at 10:39 AM
I am loving their conundrum. The only way to gain access is to start reporting that Obama is precisely the person that conservatives have been saying he is long since before the 2008 election.
They’re never going to admit that we have been right and they are either stupid or lying so they will continue to settle for being treated like the cheap whores they are.
Kataklysmic on February 19, 2013 at 10:41 AM
You may be on to something, renalin. There’s a sure-fire plan to get a conservative back in the White House. We simply need to start courting the media, telling them that once we get our guy in, they can go back to the glory days of hard-hitting, investigative reporting, stunning exposes, and breaking stories of how the president likes to put live puppies in a blender.
We’d have them voting for him in droves!

I strongly disagree. Only cowardly administrations that have agendas to hide will follow this approach. A true, principaled leader that believes in himself and his (or her) ageanda will actually communicate with the people and want journalists to do their job, for better or worse…and let the chips fall where they may.

No matter how he treats them, no matter how much he screws up, no matter now many people die, no matter how many people are suffering from his policies, no matter how much he evades, obfuscates and prevaricates, the MSM will continue to carry his water because they are like children in a Dickensian orphanage holding out their bowls and begging, “Please, sir, I want some more” in the form of an occasional pat on the head by their messiah.

YOU HAPPY PUPPET
How did they teach you to be just a happy puppet dancing on a string?
How did you learn everything that comes along with slavish funnery?
Tell me something, if the world is so insane, is it making you sane again to let another man tug at the thread that pulls up your nodding head?
How did they teach you to be just a happy puppet dancing on a string?
How do you manage to live inside this tiny stage you can’t leave?
Tell me something, if the world is so insane, is it making you sane again to let another man tug at the thread that pulls up your nodding head?
A dullard strung on the wire.
When the master’s gone you hang there with your eyes and your limbs so lifeless.
How did they teach you to be just a happy puppet dancing on a string?
How do you manage to speak, your mouth a frozen grin?
A dullard strung on the wire.
When the master’s gone you hang there with your eyes and your limbs so lifeless.
Tell me something, if the world is so insane, is it making you sane again to let another man tug at the thread that pulls up your empty wooden head?
Your hollow head, your marble eyes, your wooden hands and your metal jaw pins all wait in limbo for the man who knows how to move you this way.

Useful idiots is the phrase that comes to mind. Followed by assassination or exile to the flags once total power is attained. Those who willfully ignore history are doomed to repeat it. Especially those who later on protest the new arrangement
