Hey, let’s celebrate the income tax
Instead, beginning with the New Deal, liberals promised both low individual tax burdens and economic security for the rising middle class. They also divorced what postwar liberalism did best — providing economic security and mobility to the majority of Americans — from the burden of taxation. Social Security’s chief architects sold it as a plan for “organized and intelligent thrift” funded by “contributions,” rather than by taxes. The recipients of veterans’ benefits, farm subsidies or tax breaks to buy a home, pay for health insurance or reduce college costs were, and continue to be, honored as “taxpayers.” Meanwhile, beneficiaries of welfare, food stamps and Medicaid were and are demeaned as parasitical “tax eaters” and “takers.”…
The U.S. Constitution promises to “insure domestic tranquility,” to “provide for the common defense” and to “promote the general welfare.” Taxes make these things possible. Taxes pay for the good roads, clean air and water, safe food and drugs, and strong military that Americans value. Taxes make it possible for businesses to thrive, for children to attend school and for hospitals to care for the sick. Tax dollars pay the salaries of firefighters and police officers. Taxes pay for the emergency workers, shelters and services needed when the nation is devastated by natural disasters such as Hurricane Sandy.
So maybe the federal income tax should get a birthday party. It has, after all, given us civilization.

Dumb argument, she left out the exploitation and abuse of the tax code by special interests, among other things.

*sigh* Enough with the constant progressive propaganda stream.

Anyone who wants to can celebarte this way.

Whenever I hear people extolling the virtues of taxes, I’m quick to bring up things the government pays for that don’t make any sense.
Such as paying for a Department of Education which oversees 0 schools but gets $100 billion a year.
Such as paying for redundant bureaucracies.
Such as paying for a border patrol that’s prevented from actually stopping people from crossing the border.
Such as paying people in the NSF over $100k so they can surf porn all day.
Such as paying for the EPA, which has no oversight from Congress but can directly impact economic costs on a whim.
Or the new tax, the Affordable Care Act, which has subsequently raised prices all over the country so we now pay for the health insurance of people who already had health insurance.
And the list goes on an on…
Taxes are not virtuous.

Gawd, what a blithering idiot.
Dusty on February 18, 2013 at 1:59 PM
We did all that before the income tax, sweetie. I guess it was all hunter-gatherer nomadic clans before 1913. And you’re playing a not-so-subtle game of misdirection. You celebrate the Federal Income Tax by listing a number of things it doesn’t even pay for:
And while there is no doubt things the Federal Government is best suited for, and requires adequate funding to accomplish; it is by no means a reason to accept the current untenable status quo, or argue that nothing need be done, as you do.
Government, at all levels, is merely overhead, like an HR department. It may pay for itself, indirectly, by increasing worker morale and thus productivity. However, it should NEVER be confused as the core of a company.

And the above is Liberalism insanity in a nutshell… The stupid woman believes that if not for taxes we would not have a civilization… According to that low IQ fool all the American incredible innovations and business entrepreneurship did not give us civilizations but income taxes did…

This is all sorts of stupid.
theperfecteconomist on February 18, 2013 at 2:03 PM
Yeah, she’s a moron. Stealing money from those of us that work for a living just to piss it away is not to be celebrated.
How many wasteful things can you name boys and girls. Here, I’ll start:

Yes, I love paying for these clowns in DC pork, parties, and vacations.

Are you saying the we didn’t have civilization prior to the first income tax, Molly? Surely you jest.
Dusty on February 18, 2013 at 2:06 PM
Stupid. Industrial strength stupid.

You folks want to know what’s funny? In these two sentences, she perfectly elucidates why we SHOULD have comsumption taxes instead of income taxes. Point taken, in the late 19th century we weren’t that much of a consumer society. America was still a land where lots of people paid the doctor with a chicken. But in 2013, we’ve got people standing in long lines to pay cash to get the latest model of I-Phone. Why not throw a tax on the purchase instead of the income that led to it?
radjah shelduck on February 18, 2013 at 2:09 PM
Income tax gave us Molly’s education.
Dusty on February 18, 2013 at 2:11 PM
In 2011 welfare payments from the federal government was $1,950,000,000,000 out of $3,630,000,000,000 or 53% of the entire budget.
astonerii on February 18, 2013 at 2:15 PM
Happy Birthday, unfortunately 49% of us are paying for the cake, candles, decorations, and presents.
After the party is over the other 51% who invited themselves to the celebration complain that we didn’t provide enough cake, the presents weren’t good enough, the decorations not as extravagant as they would like, and the candles burned down too quick.

Bite me Molly.
bernzright777 on February 18, 2013 at 2:25 PM
hey let’s not. the government should have no reason to know how much you make, where you work, what you do how you spend your money. any tax should be as private as possible and give the government the least control needed to raise the rev it needs.
unseen on February 18, 2013 at 2:46 PM
Um, no, they don’t. They might pay for regulatory schemes that hinder folks who would like to pollute our air or sell us bad lettuce, but they don’t “pay for” those very things.
Um, no, they don’t. If anything, businesses thrive despite taxes. Hospitals care for the sick through direct payments and the use of charity.
OK, so far, she’s 3 for 7.
I’ll go halfsies with her on this one. Yes, taxes paid for a lot of that stuff after Sandy – but not after a lot of the tornadoes we had in the last couple of years, nor after some of the flooding. An awful lot of the time those are handled by charities and businesses (those things we call ‘insurance companies’).
So…. halfsies makes it … 4.5 for 10.
Ouch. Now, see, that’s what my math teachers would have called a MCE: Major Conceptual Error. It’s like when you’re supposed to multiply in the next step, but you subtract – you really don’t know what you’re doing.
Overall Grade: F
Points: 45/100 on multiple choice, 0/100 on essay for MCE

Which payments are you including in there? Medicare, Medicaid? Because that’s a good number to have on hand – but I want enough detail to back it up.
GWB on February 18, 2013 at 2:48 PM
Aside from the military, and the Interstate roadways – everything else should be funded at the local level.
Gads – she needs to put down the koolaid.

If nothing else, this president has crystallized on thing for all of us. These people see government as their god. It’s really that simple. Always benevolent. Always fair and just. Always with you.
These people like to think they are atheists of agnostic…but they are not. They are the radical fundamentalists of their sects.

All of these people who love taxes and make it seem virtuous to pay them better not take a SINGLE DEDUCTION when filing their returns.
I mean, honestly, if taxes are that awesome and you consider them your civic duty, you’d better be paying the top rate on your income (at a minimum — you really should be paying everything you could possibly afford to the govt). If you’re doing anything to minimize what you owe, then shut the hell up before you come to me and tell me how virtuous you and your crushing tax rates are.
Timin203 on February 18, 2013 at 4:26 PM
Federal sales tax. rescind all other taxes. Eliminate 50% of Federal Depts and install E-verfy so the Federal workers can have jobs when they are fired. Gut the EEOC, EPA, BATF, Commerce, Dept of Agriculture, Dept of Land Management, etc.
Amazing!
Bulletchaser on February 18, 2013 at 4:26 PM
Lady,
Are you frackin’ nuts or something?
Yeah…I think you are…
Income tax as envisioned, maybe. As implemented nowadays…no frackin’ way.
