Andrew Cuomo’s new mission: Legalizing late-term abortions
Mr. Cuomo, seeking to deliver on a promise he made in his recent State of the State address, would rewrite a law that currently allows abortions after 24 weeks of pregnancy only if the pregnant woman’s life is at risk. The law is not enforced, because it is superseded by federal court rulings that allow late-term abortions to protect a woman’s health, even if her life is not in jeopardy. But abortion rights advocates say the existence of the more restrictive state law has a chilling effect on some doctors and prompts some women to leave the state for late-term abortions.
Mr. Cuomo’s proposal, which has not yet been made public, would also clarify that licensed health care practitioners, and not only physicians, can perform abortions. It would remove abortion from the state’s penal law and regulate it through the state’s public health law.
Abortion rights advocates have welcomed Mr. Cuomo’s plan, which he outlined in general terms as part of a broader package of women’s rights initiatives in his State of the State address in January. But the Roman Catholic Church and anti-abortion groups are dismayed; opponents have labeled the legislation the Abortion Expansion Act.

I see that Andrew the Pious plans to be glued to his television during the papal election. He might have some time between Mass and the church picnic.

In the wake of the Republicans’ gains in 2010, Cuomo governed to the right of where state Democrats thought he was going to be, and not following the 2012 results, with Obama’s low-info/freebie-wanting voters carrying him to re-election, Andrew is lurching back to the left in the run-up to 2016, to prove he can be as liberal as anyone.
Of course, if Hillary opts to run, it won’t matter if Cuomo runs around the country with a steak knife and forceps performing late-term abortions at his campaign rallies — he’s still not getting the nomination, and would probably even lost the NYS primary to Hillary, because even liberals can figure out how opportunistic he’s being right now.

Unrestricted abortion on demand is at the top of the ‘democrat wish list’. Now that “progressive” Republicans are focusing like a laser to push obama’s and the democrats ‘wish list’ agenda – Rubio pushing amnesty, McCain pushing new gun control, etc. – which Republican will pick up the abortion flag for democrats? Which “progressive” Republican will be the spokesperson for unrestricted abortion?
Republicans are falling all over themselves to help obama destroy America. Can the Republican push for unrestricted abortion be far off?

The Cuomos are every bit as bad as the Kennedys.

Well, we’ll see now whether Dolan is truly Pope-worthy. Based on his letter to Cuomo after Cuomo’s State of the State address, it’s a good bet he’ll fail this test.

In 1984 then-Archbishop O’Connor considered excommunicating Cuomo’s father because of his statements that supporting abortion did not contradict Catholic teaching. No action was ever taken. I have a feeling history will be repeating itself.
steebo77 on February 17, 2013 at 3:10 PM
Clearly, Cuomo is without even a basic shred of decency.
This is less about Hillary, than it is about positioning himself to take on Biden (and to prevent a run by Gillibrand) in the event that HRC says ‘no mas’ to another presidential run.

Laws prohibiting murder protect rights. Laws against abortion infringe on them. Pretty important difference, don’t you think?
And if you’re going to launch into some silly rant about how fetuses should have rights, save it for someone dumb enough to actually believe that.
Armin Tamzarian on February 17, 2013 at 3:43 PM
No one has the right to murder someone outside the uterus. Why should it be any different inside the uterus?
Is a person’s right to not be murdered magically granted the moment they exit the womb?
steebo77 on February 17, 2013 at 3:50 PM
How about because the uterus is inside another person’s body?
Armin Tamzarian on February 17, 2013 at 3:51 PM
It’s been a while since I’d thought about that, so I don’t remember the details. I suspect it was a little more than statements of support, but if it was only that, I could understand O’Connor not following through. There is a big difference between words and action.
There is also a difference in how the Church should/does assess a Catholic’s conduct while a public servant. A governor who is Catholic preside faithfully to both the Church and the society with a government that allows abortion, particularly if the Governor hasn’t the power or authority to alter the circumstances.
That is much different than what we have here. Andrew Cuomo is actively doing the works of Satan here by aiding and abetting the furtherance of a grave sin. For that he should be condemned, notified of his apostasy, and warned he will be excommunicated if he doesn’t stop his actions furthering it.
Dusty on February 17, 2013 at 3:52 PM
So you think a sitting governor should be threatened by a religious institution if he doesn’t govern to their liking? Do you realize how insane that is?
Armin Tamzarian on February 17, 2013 at 3:55 PM
It’s not threatening to hold out the possibility of excommunication. Cuomo knew the rules of the Church ahead of time, before he started his push for late-term baby murder. He should be under no illusions about the possible consequences. The Church is a private organization and can make decisions about its membership as it sees fit. What’s insane about that?
steebo77 on February 17, 2013 at 3:58 PM
And a human being is inside that body. Kind of changes things. I suspect your house is your kingdom but when human life is involved…it changes things. You’re not real bright. Say when are you going to prove you’re capable of ranting about another subject ? My goodness you’re a one trick pony.
CW on February 17, 2013 at 3:59 PM
Just because something is inside someone’s body doesn’t shield actions involving it from the purview of the law.
steebo77 on February 17, 2013 at 3:59 PM
What harm is the baby in the uterus doing to that person? Costing her money? Causing her to face a future of efforts she decides not to deal with? How is that different than if she decides not to deal with it after it was born?
We’re talking late term now. The baby can live outside the womb.
Dusty on February 17, 2013 at 4:03 PM
You’re a joke and like most of our one trick pony trolls your logic is whacked and dishonest. It is clear in your life you have killed your own kids. Your pain won’t go away by playing these games.
CW on February 17, 2013 at 4:03 PM
Pfft. It not only not insane, it is insane not to do it. And it’s not a threat. It’s a promise.
Besides, you blow out of proportion the action the Church takes. It merely kicks him out the membership of the Church. I doubt all Catholics would shun him forever.
Oh, yeah, it’s also just a reminder that he should repent about it before he dies or he’ll burn in hell.
Why are you making such a big deal about it.
Dusty on February 17, 2013 at 4:09 PM

I want the abortionistas to give an age at which the child is too old to kill. Is it when the head pops out? Is it after the “thing” is fully out? Or maybe it’s within the first week after birth? Seriously, is there a consensus about when the “thing” becomes human among the “prochoice” people?

I don’t know that Dolan would want to let it be said that Child Butcher of Albany was a Catholic while on his watch, but it will be said unless he takes swift action to excommunicate Cuomo before the law is passed.
Dusty on February 17, 2013 at 4:29 PM

Wow – babies born after 24 weeks often survive and do well but Cumo wants to approve ripping them out. No one ever explains why the doctors just don’t do a C-section if the woman’s health is at risk.

Putting the government in the womb to make sure it is free from government intervention at the same time of putting government in the gun barrel to make sure it is full of government intervention.

[gryphon202 on February 17, 2013 at 4:33 PM]
I don’t know who you mean, but if it had to do with someone in Massachusetts, or Boston, specifically, Dolan doesn’t have jurisdiction.
I may be wrong about Dolan having the authority to excommunicate Cuomo, for that matter. I don’t know canon law that well. He’s archbishop of NY and NY is the metropolitan archdiocese which includes all the dioceses in NY, but he doesn’t have authority in those other dioceses to take actions there. The individual bishops of those diocesesdo.
I suppose he could if Cuomo is a member of a parish in the Archdiocese on NY, but if he was a member of one in Albany, then that Bishop would probably need to do it.
Still what Cuomo is doing will affect Dolan’s diocese so he has the responsibility to condemn his acts.
If I were a canon advisor, I’d recommend the bishops skip looking in their parishioner registries to find out whose job it is and just declare him a fugitive member and let all the bishops excommunicate him. Cuomo deserves to excommunicated like 6 times, anyway.
