Obama’s second-term agenda, courting the twenty-somethings
Whatever its impact on the immediate policy debate, Obama’s speech marked a milestone in his effort to anneal the Democratic Party to that coalition’s priorities. Especially striking was how much of it seemed targeted directly at the massive and diverse millennial generation, born between 1981 and 2002. Obama addressed them repeatedly: by insisting that entitlement spending on the old must face some limits to prevent it from crowding out investment in the young; by framing climate change as a generational challenge; by pledging to provide young people with more training and to confront rising college costs; and by closing with a paean to citizenship that reflected their civic impulses. “They are the leading edge of where the country is headed ideologically as well as demographically,” one senior White House aide said.
The speech marked a capstone to a progression that began after the breakdown of Obama’s negotiations with House Speaker John Boehner during the debt-ceiling crisis in summer 2011. In those talks, Obama followed a Bill Clinton-type strategy of attempting to rebuild majority support following the GOP’s 2010 landslide by finding compromises with Republicans. But after that effort collapsed, Obama turned to the track that carried him to reelection and the well of Congress this week: seeking primarily to mobilize his coalition of the ascendant by articulating its priorities on social issues and the role of government, even at the price of provoking further resistance from right-leaning whites.

The twenty-somethings in my office all got reduced paychecks recently, and do need courting by him.

The same 20-somethings who are getting f’ed over by his policies? If they’re stupid enough to keep supporting the Democrats after the last 4 years, then they deserve to suffer.

Just remember… the biggest swing from 2008 to 2012 election was by young white voters… IIRC, Obama won them by 14 points in 2008 and lost them by 10 points in 2012.
The whole term “youth vote” is starting to become meaningless and will be completely meaningless by 2030… there will only be an ethnic vote.

All my daughters friends
arewere big time Obama supporters. All in their 20′s and just now beginning to realize how badly they screwed themselves.I hear a lot of comments from the 20 somethings that start out similarly:
“I thought Obama said he was going to….”
“I thought Obama said he wasn’t going to…”

This is news?
When did he not court the twenty somethings?
fogw on February 15, 2013 at 8:32 AM
Courting? More like fluking.
HumpBot Salvation on February 15, 2013 at 8:38 AM

Democrats win the young by appealing to their emotions, their idealism, their belief in “diversity”, and other Liberal garbage while luring them into a life of enslavement to government. A life of Julia for all.
Seems to me that in an age of 1:1, targeted, and micro-marketing that the conservative message of individualism would be more appealing than smothering, one size fits all, Big government.

Did they change their votes last year? If not, then they get no sympathy from me.

He’s losing the white twentysomethings. It’s questionable whether the black twentysomethings will be as enthusiastic about a non-black candidate, and the ends of Castro and Chavez may come to mean there are a lot of jobs opening south of the border that would love to have young, skilled twentysomethings who speak perfect Spanish. Spanish twentysomethings are already going to Latin America for jobs.

The problem with that is the assumption that 20-somethings actually want freer markets, increased federalism, increased individual responsibility (aka being a functional adult), school choice, right to work, etc.
I assumed this for a long time: That the problem was conservatives getting their message across. But now, after living with and being surrounded by Lefties my entire life… They just don’t want liberty like we do. They want less freedom. They -want- to have old, white men directing and planning the difficult things in their life for them. In other words, they don’t really want to grow up. This includes my 40-something friends as well.

he’s done a masterful job of fluking them, they feel a little fluked, they are disappointed but they still blame republicans…I don’t think anyone in American political history has been able to demonize the opposition like he has…ever…
Of course a 24 hour cheerleading news cycle helps too, and they not only cheerlead for him and his liberal causes, as we saw with Palin, Romney and just recently Rubio, the entire major news “world” is devoted whole heartedly to destroying anyone conservative, period…that ain’t gonna change either..

Uh oh, they’re noticing how badly they are getting hosed. Better crank the Obama Campaign BS machine up to 11.

That’s because we’ve raised generations of me-first, instant gratification seeking, lazy people. It’s only natural that a by-product of that is their expectation for the government to do everything for them(while someone else pays for it). The question is what will all these folks do when(not if) the entire system collapses.

“I’m sorry you’re underemployed and heavily in debt. I am sorry you still live with your parents at age 28. I am sorry you can’t afford to fix your car or save. But let me be clear young folks – I’m gonna punish
BushRepublicans and I got a whole lotta free shiznit I can give you. If you want an iPad you can have an iPad.”CorporatePiggy on February 15, 2013 at 9:16 AM
It’s a blatant appeal to narcissism. Young people are both idealistic and immature, as well as economically illiterate beause they have notbeen in the functioning economy long enough to understand how it work. Young people want to “save the planet,” while also having meaningful jobs and comfortable lives. They have no idea where money comes from, how long you have to work to afford a car or a house or a college education, because Mom and Dad simply did all these things for them. Now Obama tells them he will provideall these thigs for them and they say, “sounds good,” while Republicans tell them “no, you can’t have all these nice things becase Mom and Dad’s generation spent all the money.”
rockmom on February 15, 2013 at 9:22 AM
Exactly… In 2012 Romney won the young white voters 18-29 by 51% to Obama 44%…

So he’s going to repeal Obamacare?
LukeinNE on February 15, 2013 at 10:31 AM
Just remember that Obysmal disparages individualism: “You’re on your own” vs “Together we thrive.”
These millennials were “educated” via a cooperative-learning model. Their achievements were always measured in group-think terms.
