GOP aide: Hagel might not have enough Republican votes to beat a filibuster
Democrats would need at least five Republican votes to end a filibuster, a goal that has started to appear increasingly difficult to achieve. “Last week, I was pretty confident that, despite [Hagel’s] horrible showing at the confirmation hearing, he would still probably get to 60 votes,” a GOP Senate aide told National Review Online. “But I think his hiding the ball on [disclosing past associations] is going to hurt his ability get those five Republican votes.”
Hagel supporters have charged that filibustering a cabinet nominee would be unprecedented, but that simply is not true. In 2006, for example, Democrats filibustered the nomination of Dirk Kempthorne, President George W. Bush’s choice for secretary of the interior.
There is nothing Republicans can do to prevent Hagel’s nomination from passing out of the committee, which Democrats control. However, Senate sources confirm that several GOP members of the committee are mulling a walkout of Tuesday’s vote in protest, although Senator John McCain (R., Ariz.) has argued against the idea, calling it “disrespectful to Chairman Levin and at odds with the best traditions of the Senate Armed Services Committee.”

Although a walk out seems rather childish McCain’s reason for not doing it is stupid. Vote your conscience, explain why, then have the guts to call out the dems for their providing cover for their president.

Time to totter off into retirement, Mac, your schtick is getting old.
For a guy who so courageously served his nation, Johnny has a distinct penchant (yes I said penchant) for throwing that nation under the bus in the name of political politeness.
Who gives a flying flock if Levin feels disrespected, Hagel is a disaster and even Levin himself knows it. Start serving the people and to hell with your petty little worries about hurt feelings.

Hagel’s incompetence is overwhelming. Even liberals were embarrassed by the guy. Fillibuster and do it loudly.
BuckeyeSam on February 12, 2013 at 9:11 AM
The guy is a threat to national security.

Eh, let Obama have his unqualified appointee. Obama’s hellbent on going hard left this term, folks. The next guy or gal in line is probably worse.

I’m with McCain on this one. Hagel doesn’t matter, he’s a straw man. Obama’s looking for a fight on this, and doesn’t care if Hagel is confirmed or not; in fact, Hagel is probably not his real first choice. Obama just wants to embarrass Republicans. So call his bluff and confirm the guy. It’s not the Republican’s fault if Hagel is confirmed and he sucks. Republicans should explain why Hagel sucks and then confirm him. Then he is Obama’s problem.

……so therefore I’ll vote for a box of rocks to run the DOD .
In addition I’ll give o another opportunity to make a scapegoat
out of my good friend ……..
Sincerely ,
John McCain

Exactly. So then why filibuster? Why do the Democrats’ job for them? Vote to confirm.
Mr. Arkadin on February 12, 2013 at 9:31 AM
Exactly. The Democrats in Washington may be wrong about most things, but they’re generally not stupid. I suspect they hope the GOP goes nuclear on Hagel. It would bail out Obama’s terrible choice and give more ammunition to the left that the GOP is obstructionist or whatever.

That would be tempting if there weren’t lives at stake. I have 2 nephews serving. Not to mention an entire country of Israel. On thing about Jocylynn Elders, she really didn’t matter much.
