Their whole point is that the sugars in soda slow alcohol absorption; not that diet soda speeds it.
The could have said a water back gets you drunk faster than a coke back and used the same data… and still been misleading (the water isn’t faster, a sugary drink makes the process slower).
The point made is technically correct, but misleading as to the cause and effect… it would be more accurate to say: “Soda (or other sugary drinks) get your drunk slower than no mixer or a sugar-free mixer or back”.
