McCain: I might consider new tax revenues as part of a way to avoid the sequester
“Republicans and Democrats are responsible for this new cliff and I’ll take responsibility for it for the Republicans,” McCain said of the spending cuts. “But we’ve got to avoid it. We’ve got to stop it.”
Averting the cuts “requires bipartisanship,” McCain added. “Will I look at revenue closers? Maybe so. But we’ve already just raised taxes. Why do we have to raise taxes again?”…
Despite McCain’s openness to possible new tax revenues, Rep. Tom Cole (R-Okla.) told ABC’s “This Week” that House Republicans would oppose new taxes as part of any short-term deal to turn off the cuts because, “The president’s accepted no spending cuts back in the fiscal cliff deal 45 days ago.”

Um,
NO. Is there really a problem with saying “No” to something worse than the “sequester” … a truly non-event.
ProfShadow on February 10, 2013 at 10:40 PM
Well that’s a big shock coming from McCain!
NOT!

Will someone inform the senior senator from Arizona that he has ZERO role in this. Unless he’s been promoted to leadership John should STFU.
xkaydet65 on February 10, 2013 at 10:41 PM
So we must stop the sequester but not raise any taxes?

And this, folks, is why we don’t call him President McCain.

God grief, Maverick, let the sequester happen. Man up.
Cindy Munford on February 10, 2013 at 11:16 PM
obviously O’s game is to run a government at 24 percent GDP until he breaks the Rs, then increase taxes to roughly 25 percent of gdp to stabilize the government and the debt.
O’s basic point is: do you want this slow or fast? Any D successor to O will continue his policies…and I doubt that Rs will win in 16…so faster, i.e. just give him the money would do less damage to the country. I’m not liking the slow drip method that just humiliates Rs every few months

Averting the cuts requires bipartisanship = Republicans caving

We have these bastards right where we want them. Then along comes John McCain.
Mark1971 on February 10, 2013 at 11:41 PM
Can anyone figure out what the hell McCain is getting at here? He undercuts the GOP’s entire bargaining position by saying “we’ve got to avoid” the sequester and accepting at least part of the responsibility of it(which once the Democrat/media complex is through will translate as ENTIRELY the GOP’s fault).
Then to make matters worse, he at least says he’s “maybe” open to more taxes. So you’ve stated openly that you don’t want the sequester to happen and in the same breath admit that additional tax hikes are a possibility. Why the hell are you even there, John? We may as well just let the Dems have the House back and do whatever they want. The end result will be no different than now, and at least then they’d own the entire mess.

McCain doesn’t want to see one cent of defense cuts. That is what’s motivating him here.
Mark1971 on February 11, 2013 at 12:05 AM
Unless he has suggestions on what else should be cut to preserve his precious “Defense” spending, how can any conservative take him seriously?
aryeung on February 11, 2013 at 12:17 AM
Maverick isn’t.
unclesmrgol on February 11, 2013 at 12:30 AM
Cut need to happen. The sequester will deliver cuts an a message.
Newsflash: The sequester will be far less damaging than the Barky spending binge and they will only target a fraction of the fat that needs to be trimmed.
It really is getting old hearing federal types claim that any cut in their budgets will result in the end of the world.

No surprise here. Anyone who doesn’t believe in national sovereignty is pretty flexible on everything.

I saw McCain, and then saw him again in the re run on Fox News Sunday, and I swear I did not hear him say we needed to raise taxes, the WaPo is hearing only what they want to hear….
New Revenues used to come when we cut taxes, and grew the economy.
And I am sure it sounded to me like McCain favored selective cuts at the Pentagon, we all know that you can cut things nobody wants…
like expensive green initiatives in the military that benefit the pocketbooks of Obama friends.
Fleuries on February 11, 2013 at 8:22 AM
Averting the cuts “requires
bipartisanshipcowering and caving to their bullying,” McCain added.Yep.

For a guy who has admitted he knows squat about economics even after being in Congress for almost some 25 years, he ought to be ashamed for burdening the Republic by having run for a fifth term.
I thought he said he was going to take responsibility? I guess he doesn’t know what “take responsibility” means. I suggest he stop by Rand Paul’s office and ask.
Dusty on February 11, 2013 at 9:12 AM
Every so often it needs to be pointed out that McCain, his father and grandfather were all lifetime federal employees, living in federal housing, attending federal schools, and receiving federal healthcare. It really isn’t reasonable to expect him to be a ‘small government’ guy.
